Guild Wars is good with friends.
You have to buy the actual game but there are no subscription fees.

I don't really play MMOs, but I have a couple of friends who were into Anarchy Online, which has a "Free Play" program.

Not Runescape! Whatever you do don't play Runescape. Play FlyFF or something instead. God I hate Runescape.

What he said. Runescape is awful. Just... awful.

As @Apathylad said, Anarchy Online is pretty damn solid. A personal favorite of mine is Shattered Galaxy, but it's far from the standard formula seeing it's basically a real time tactical RPG in MMO form.

I like Wurm Online. The game's emphasis is building/crafting and less about combat, so it may not be your cup of tea.
The free option is more then enough to have fun.

Im having a lot of fun playing Shin Megami Tensei: IMAGINE Online. I wouldent say its a great game but it is an MMORPG where we can get together as various class's and run dungeons. Im playing as a straight up Warrior (DPS), weve got a party healer, a ranged/magic user and an all rounder. Its really fun because were playing with friends but as a game its passable.

Sorry mate never played an enjoyable free mmo.  Considering how many of them you can find I wish you luck finding one to suit your tastes.

Since it sounds like this is more short term (holidays) - I say go out and get WoW for 10 bucks and enjoy your free 30 days that comes with it.  Much better investment of time imo then most of the crap mmos out there.

Anarchy Online is a fantastic game if you like sci-fi games and can deal with horrible graphics. It's fully 3d and all, but it's just really old... like 8 years old or something - back before people had come up with the name "MMORPG." It's incredibly in-depth when it comes to character customization. After you reach level 20 or so (out of 256 levels, I think), you will realize that not one player out there has the same specs or gear. The reason the game is so well-built is because it used to have a mandatory subscription fee. The only problem is that you need to choose the Atlantean server, because the other one doesn't have many players... at all. Another good side note is that most of the players are very smart, especially for MMO standards. Just make sure you join a good Organization to help get you situated.

Guild Wars- A great subscriptionless MMO if you don't mind actually paying for the game discs themselves.
Maplestory- A platform-based MMO.
Puzzle Pirates- An unconventional puzzle-based MMO. There are subscription servers but you can also choose a "doubloon ocean" where it's free-to-play.
Dragonica- A 3D side-scrolling MMO.

Well I suppose that's a slightly deceptive description (although there are a small number of quests in the game which are just straight out platforming stages). I suppose you could call it a 2D-side-scrolling-based MMO but that doesn't seem to quite do it justice as almost all areas of the game have multiple levels which the character often has to jump between platforms or climb up/down ropes, ladders etc. to traverse between. Advancement through the game may not be dependent on platforming but there is at very least light platforming involved throughout.

Yeah, that's true.  Especially given the fact that there are a number of skills that are there to facilitate the platforming (haste, teleport...).  All those platforming stage quests, without monsters and stuff, were just frustrating and pointless, though.

@Nightroad91:

You might want to wait for that Torchlight MMO that's coming sometime next year- if it's anything like the single-player game, it'll be a ton of fun.

Also I hear that this game, Ebbony-something, I think it's called Evony, is FREE TO PLAY FOREVER.

Dungeons & Dragons Online is now Free-to-Play.  DDO used to be a subscription MMO meant to compete with WoW, so it has high grade assets.  There are a lot of videos featuring game play on YouTube.  Here's the Monk class tutorial video.  [ LINK]  It should give you an idea of what to expect.

yeap. it will take at least a year, if not more.

Runic Games launched Torchlight as a way to get funds to develop the mmo.

So it will take a while longer.
