I know the industry's been absolutely bombarded with hd remasters and definitive editions etc. but I've been thinking recently about what remasters I'd actually want to see. Honestly, I think I'd like a remastered package of Infamous 1&2 with some actual weight being thrown at it by Sony. I loved those games when they came out, but with the lack of backwards compatibility and my lack of interest in setting up my PS3 again, I don't see myself getting around to playing them unless they're re-released. Still the same thing that happens now with remasters would probably happen with those games, and I'd buy them, mess around with them for an hour or so and then keep them on the shelf. So what remasters would you want to see? Do you actually play these remasters to completion or do what I do and shelf them after a couple hours of playing?
Remasters You Actually WANT To See?
There are some old PC games that it would be really cool to see redone to some degree. Stuff like X-Wing and Tie Fighter comes to mind. Freedom Force. Silent Storm. At least some upgrade to the game would be nice but with some of these old games just getting them to work well with a modern system, have widescreen support, etc is useful.
I think the upcoming System Shock remake game is a good example of what I would love to see for some of these old PC games.
For console games, Vagrant Story would be a cool one. I've dabbled in it but when I did, didn't fully grasp the game. Now I feel like I could go back to it with some tips and figure it out more. It could look great redone with its art style.
Far Cry 2 and I'm reasonably sure that @austin_walker would agree, not that it really needs a remaster.
Mass Effect 1 remastered specifically just to make the combat more entertaining. I would also like to see a Super Mario 64 remaster. That game would really benefit from updated camera controls and a modern 2 analog stick controller.
This I can stand behind 100%
Far Cry 2 and I'm reasonably sure that @austin_walker would agree, not that it really needs a remaster.
Yep, you have both Malaria and Zika now :P
But seriously, I'd play a remastered Far Cry 2. Not sure exactly what they'd remaster, but I love that game.
I'd love to see Xenogears remake/remaster. Super crisp character drawings and maaaaybe finish up some of that missing story on disc 2?
Edit: Also Star Trek: Bridge Commander cause I can't find that digitally and I don't have an optical drive anymore.
Dragon Quest VIII for the PS4. Yes, I know it came out on the 3DS. But come on, its the 3DS. I want that game on a console.
Also, although FFXII is coming out soon, it's going to be the Zodiac System version, which sucks. Although FFX let you pick which version you wanted, so maybe XII will do that too. So provisionally, I'll say FFXII.
It's a shame the focus is on rereleasing last gen games. PS2 era still has a ton of gems. I quite enjoyed the Onimusha series and I never got to play the Shadow Hearts games. A real touched up Burnout 3 would be awesome. From last gen, I never got to play Bad Company and Asura's Wrath and they never got a PC release so I'd happy with those.
Dungeon Hack or pretty much any first person D&D randomized dungeon crawler. Even now those games are my ultimate podcast games. Grimrock 1&2 kind of scratched that itch, but without the randomization I could only get one good playthrough out of them. A touched up version with clean graphics, and 5th edition rule set would be amazing.
Otogi 1 and 2 for the original Xbox. Both on a single disc, 60FPS, 1080p or something with achievements and I'm set.
Honestly though, a lot of the remasters/rereleases I want are from the original Xbox. I really want a HD Re-release of Jet Set Radio Future (60fps please) and Panzer Dragoon Orta. The Sega games for the original Xbox were all amazingly good.
Remastered PC Games? ....I really want a re-release of Riven: The Sequel to Myst and a playable version of Zanzarah: The Hidden Portal (the steam version is absolutely awful, runs like ass)
FFVIII? It hasn't really been touched like most of the other FFs of that generation, and before FFXV it was my favourite game in the series.
I would be down with seeing a touched up version of Xenogears as well, as it is one of my favourite games of all time.
@lawgamer: Why no to the zodiac job system? As somebody who didn't like XII much that system actually looks much more interesting to me and may actually get me to play through the game a second time.
I would like to echo the sentiments of the original poster. I just recently played through inFamous: Second Son again to get the platinum. Though I really enjoyed it, I've seen a lot of people finding it to be inferior to 1 and 2, so I would like to go back and play a remastered version of those two for the first time.
This thread has been done before a few times but I'm too lazy to find the other thread right now so I'll roll with this one.
- SOCOM US Navy SEALs (and SOCOM 2)
- Rainbow Six (the originals, not the Vegas games)
- Fallout (the old style, like Fallout in the Wasteland 2 engine)
- Fallout 2
- Resident Evil (Remake the REmake)
- Resident Evil 2 (we're actually getting this, yay!)
- Resident Evil 3
- Deus Ex
- SWAT/Police Quest
- Strife
- Syphon Filter
I'd like to see No One Lives Forever 2. I played the first one on Playstation 2 and I thought it was hilarious and charming. I never got to play 2.
Definitely Red Dead Redemption. Having gone back to it on the PS3 a couple of weeks ago, the gameplay still holds up, but the frame rate is really inconsistent and barely ever reaches 30 which is a surprise since I don't remember ever thinking that it ran poorly. Or maybe I've started to notice frame rate issues in games in subsequent years.
- PS2
- Ace Combat 4, 5 and Zero
- God Hand
- Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time
- Timesplitters: Future Perfect
- Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne / Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2
- Champions Return to Arms
- Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists of the Roses
- Midnight Club 3 DUB Edition
- Drakengard
- Suikoden IV
Too bad PS2 on PS4 is garbage, I'd buy these without skipping a beat. At least they got Dark Cloud 2.
- 360
- WarTech
- Project Sylpheed
- Culdcept Saga
- Resonance of Fate
- Magna Carta 2
- Chromehounds
These are super deep cuts that will never happen.
Extra bonus points if someone revived dead online games like SMT: Imagine and Dynasty Warriors Online (Curse you Aeria Games.)
Mass Effect Trilogy, yeah I'm that guy.
Currently playing it again (up to ME2 at the moment) and that XBOX360 slim doesn't sound too good.
Well it's on Xbox One backwards compatibility, so that's something. I remember EA saying they didnt want to do remasters which for that company is a very weird stance, especially since Burnout Revenge was one of the first they made a big deal out of.
Yep, i'd like that too but it's EA so who knows. That semi-recent SSX just didnt cut it. Boring courses, interchangable dubstep soundtrack. Zero funk ;(
For me i'd like the old Tony Hawks games in HD on current consoles. No changes. Tony Hawk HD was an abomination.
Also, Godhand.
I want Demon's Souls on PS4 so bad.
Demon's souls. Where it all started.
This. But I am afraid that various reasons are preventing it from ever happening.
I would also like to throw in Planescape: Torment into this list.
Secret of Mana with HD hand-drawn assets but closely in the style of the original game. Or get Studio Ghibli involved and Ni No Kuni that shit.
...though they might fuck it up. :(
None, zero, no remasters. I will never play them. Make me new games.
why not both? but if resources can only be dedicated for one or the other, i too am quite a bit in favor of new IPs. or at least decent re-imaginings or new installments in established franchises.
I don't know if anybody said it yet, but Knights of the Old Republic. One of my favorite games ever, it gives me chills reminiscing.
