Overview
Layers of Fear, not to be confused with the 2023 remake of the same name, is a psychological horror first-person exploration game developed by Bloober Team and published digitally by Aspyr (later Bloober Team themselves) for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Mac, and Linux on February 16, 2016, with a Nintendo Switch release on February 21, 2018 and a short-lived iOS release on October 24, 2019. The PC version received an Early Access release on August 27, 2015.
Set in the 1920's United States, Layers of Fear puts players in the role of a mentally-unstable painter wandering a constantly-changing Victorian-era mansion, searching for inspiration for his magnum opus. Described as a "psychedelic horror game", players uncover terrifying visions as they wander the mansion and explore the painter's past.
The game later received an epilogue DLC chapter on August 2, 2016, known as Layers of Fear: Inheritance, that expands the story with the player now controlling the painter's daughter as she returns to her childhood home to face her past. It received a sequel in 2019, known as Layers of Fear 2, and received a same-name remake in 2023, remastering the stories of both games and their DLC while including new chapters.
It also received multiple VR-only releases, the first of which being the mobile Android port, released on December 7, 2016 as Layers of Fear: Solitude, that required use of the Daydream platform. It later received a PC re-release by Incuvo on December 10, 2019 as Layers of Fear VR, which later received a release for the Oculus Quest on July 9, 2020 and for the PlayStation VR on April 29, 2021.
