I recommend limiting your frames to 30 (PC version)

This is one of those games were I prefer 30 FPS over 60 FPS. This makes the game look more cinematic as well as match the game up with the videos and effects (ie explosions, fire etc) which are animated in 30 fps already and look weird inside of a 60 fps game.

To limit your frames go to:

    C:\Users\******\Documents\BioWare\Mass Effect 3 Demo\BIOGame\Config

open the file GamerSettings. (It should open in notepad.)

Look for [SystemSettings] (there will be some commands under it like BorderlessWindow=False etc....)

then paste MaxSmoothedFrameRate=30.000000 with the list of other commands.

    Then close notepad and save.

"****** = what you named your windows username."

This trick should work for the full verison of ME3 and most unreal engine games, though I haven't tried it passed the ME3 demo and ME2.

Honestly I think this game looks fine at 60 fps. At 30 fps you are introducing a greater degree of latency into the combat making it harder to control. Why would I handicap myself like that?

@evilrazer: Not necessarily... I find I prefer gaming in 30 FPS because 60 is way too fluid and seems just off to me.

@jetsetwillie: I'm pretty sure the human eye only sees in 30 FPS or less...

I think it has something to do with how the game was made. Games like Battlefield look way better in 60+ fps where as games like Dues Ex:HR the people look like puppets in 60 fps.

I completely disagree. The input lag on a game running at 30 FPS on the PC is horrendous.

Unlike films or video games, reality is continuous when it comes to time, so the framerate analogy makes no sense.

Deus Ex: HR is way better in 60 FPS than 30 FPS. I have no idea what you're talking about with the "puppets" comparison. I have yet to run into a game that looks or plays better at 30 FPS than at 60 FPS.

Mass Effect has always been designed to be played with a gamepad first and foremost. The fact that the space bar is both the action and the sprint button pretty much tells you that right away.

Limiting yourself to 30 FPS!? What madness is this? You know when 30 FPS was acceptable? The Middle Ages, that's when! This is the future, and I will force every last frame out of my hardware if I have to wring my graphics card between my hands to get it.

Just my opinion on the animations. If you prefer 60 for this game over 30 that's fine. Too me certain games, not all, just don't look right with a frame rate as smooth as 60. Same reason I don't like those "smoothing" options on HD TVs (CineMotion on sonys etc..) It will make a 200 million dollar movie look like a soap opera.

If 60fps "looks weird" to you then you obviously have not played with 60 frames enough for your eyes to adjust. Its just a better expeience overall and the one advantage the PC version has over the console version.

There's a reason why one of COD/RAGE's selling points was 60 FPS. It's smoother and less input lag. Although I'm okay with 30FPS, I still feel that pang for more frames.

Film =/= games. Film running at 24 fps features a camera you have no control over, with motion blur blending the frames together. A game does not.

Preferring 30 fps over 60 is to me like preferring 720p over 1080p.

I'll just get it on console instead, if I get it at all. The whole lack of controller support is the real dealbreaker here and it's why I never finished ME2. I don't wanna sit at my desk to play this game, so I won't.

edit: Also 72fps still isn't really right either. Sight doesn't function in frames per second. It's more of a persistence thing and is inconsistent depending on which part of the eye sees the thing. When I look directly at my old CRT I cannot see a flicker at 60 hz. However when it's to either side in my periphery vision, the flicker is overwhelming. Only cranking it up to 75hz does it seem to go mostly away. And yes, I could still notice it a bit at 72hz.

Without really nice motion blur that can match what a camera produces (kind of like the Crysis series) 30 FPS looks like garbage. Without that, no way in hell can 30 FPS make a game more "Cinematic."

I played a full playthrough of ME 2 on console and PC too... Not a single problem, in fact I find the PC experience considerably better at 60FPS too so this is confusing to me but I say you should do what makes you happy, if lowering the FPS does it for you then that's cool with me...

If you want to be more cinematic, limit it to 24 FPS. :-) That's what movies actually run at if you want to be accurate. The problem with this concept is that you have direct control over the actions on screen. If you are running at 30FPS, you will have a lot of input lag. Movies are fine (for the most part) at 24FPS because it's a static action, I would actually prefer movies up the FPS as well. The Hobbit Part 1/2 will actually be shown at 48FPS by the way.

The Mass Effect series was built from the ground up with consoles in mind, not PCs. It's clearly a situation of a console game being ported to the PC, not the other way around.

On a more serious note, a game almost always looks a lot better with higher fps.. maybe the exception being cutscenes. So, maybe you could limit just the cutscenes to 30? No, that would look weird and will probably give people heart attacks after prolonged exposure.

@evilrazer: Not necessarily... I find I prefer gaming in 30 FPS because 60 is way too fluid and seems just off to me.

@jetsetwillie: I'm pretty sure the human eye only sees in 30 FPS or less...

If you could only see in 30 FPS, then it would be impossible to tell the difference between 30 and 60 on a screen.

Personally, I'm going to play the CGA version of the game. This makes the game look more video gamey.

You can get 60 fps on your xbox?

I'm pretty sure this thread is about the PC... ? Where was Xbox mentioned here

You have a gaming PC? that's awesome, I didn't know.

It's obsolete now but it was great back in the day. Just because I can't play the newest, most graphically demanding games now doesn't mean I couldn't 5-6 years ago. And since when were you an insider on my personal belongings?

That makes sense. I don't know where I heard this crazy false-fact from :S
