What the fuck people? Why is there a dozen pages of people going "What?" New console. Controller with a screen. Information on the screen (Like inventory) and connectivity between the screens. What was so hard to understand? The problem is because we were trying to actually get out information from the press conference where they were trying to give people information. In initially announcing it they tied it to the Wii name, and barely said the word "console" at all and then, the first time they showed a game running on the controller, it was an existing Wii game. And they also didn't show A SINGLE PICTURE OR REPRESENTATION of the new console itself during the entire press conference, which was a bizarrely stupid move on their behalf. They wouldn't show anything of the actual console itself, and that confused the hell out of people.

Nintendo was founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1889 as a manufacturer of hanafuda playing cards. The company went through several small niche businesses before becoming a video game company.
E3 2011 - Nintendo Press Conference Discussion
So they made a successor to the Wii, that can do everything it could do, it on par (or possibly higher, fuck it I know) with the 360 and PS3, and has an insane controller with a billion different functions on it.Pretty much this, but the idea that it won't be out for another year, and that all of the launch games will be old by that point is kind of putting me off of this.
Alright.
I am intrigued, Nintendo.
Couldn't Sony copy this pretty quickly by making the NGP/Vita work as a controller for the PS3?The god-damn PSP is a controller for the ps3, and has been for a couple of years now :/
Pretty sure the console was shown in the video for the WiiU. It was right next to the TV. Then the dude switched to the controller.
Their presentation was horrible. Up until the reel footage of third-party developers talking and showing games, I wasn't sure if there actually was a new console or if the WiiU was simply the controller. Now I guess it really is as powerful as the PS3 and 360. But still, they did not talk about some sort of unified Network at all, and that was a bullet point they needed to check. Everything about that press conference was half-assed.

Watch them try to add it. But the two weren't designed specifically for each other like the WiiU is.
Gut reactions is controller looks huge. Don't like how the analogs are above the face buttons. Not sure how I feel about the montage of developers talking about how excited they were about the new tech and what they could do. Didn't they have similar montages for both the DS and Wii? Don't think that was ever really delivered on. Not passing judgement on it, frankly kinda confused and don't have all the info; but I hope this isn't another machine where all they've got is their first party stuff.
And I can't tell from the third party games if the "console" is as powerful, almost as powerful, or will be more powerful than the current consoles. Maybe I have to watch the videos again or maybe they weren't the best examples, I dunno.

It was a press conference where they were announcing details of a new console and they never directly showed the new console. We're not expected to play I Spy, we're supposed to actually be shown stuff. It's understandable why it was confusing.
@oraknabo said:Really? How many games have you used the PSP to play on the PS3????Couldn't Sony copy this pretty quickly by making the NGP/Vita work as a controller for the PS3?The god-damn PSP is a controller for the ps3, and has been for a couple of years now :/
I don't get why nintendo thinks that if i have an hdtv i'd at any point want to look down at their gimmick little controller.
Did they show any live demo/gameplay? I only caught the back end of the presentation thing.
Nintendo sure did pull a fast one on me, i went in hoping for the best and now im confused
Cool new games announced for the 3ds was the only thing that got my interest, might think about getting one now.
But the Wii U, seriously, wtf nintendo. its worse than the PS vita. And why just focus on the gimmicks of the new controller? I thought it was just a wii periphial until i saw a picture of the actual console above. And that does not look comfy for long periods of play.
To be fair it doesn't really matter what the box looks like does it. The controller is the big deal so it's completely legit to just focus on that. The only thing to learn about 'the box' is how powerful it is and how much of a step beyond the current gen it goes and thus how long it can allow you to play games primarily developed for other systems.
So, the Wii U can do 360 and PS3 stuff now? Well, that is something. At least it gives me a reason to buy one when Dragon Quest X is released. I don't know. I'll need to see a lot more games and their implementation on the system before I make a decision. Whatever they price the system at, it better be equal to or less than the combined price of a PS3 and Vita, because I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tacked on some similar inter-connectivity between their handheld and console. That would actually be a good thing for 3rd party game developers since they could make one game for both combined systems.
Oh and if it hasn't been said before (and I'd be shocked if it hasn't); "Wii U? More like "Pee-ew"

They were kind of acting like the controller was the console or some shit.
bawaugh
not saying that it excused the avoidance of the console itself, but still, it was there. I like setting records
Personally, I think the WiiU looks very cool. It's not a great name but we'll get use to it, and you can understand why they called it t he WiiU, they put meaning behind the name like they did with the Wii, so I'm looking forward to it.
I think they won, even though it wasn't as good this year.
What I'm really wondering is whether the WiiU will be lagging behind Microsoft and Sony's next consoles in terms of graphical power, just as the Wii did. I mean its as powerful as both of those right now, if not more, but is it enough?
Sure, but not everybody has that luxury, especially in big families. I definitely don't think it will be relevant to many people, but it will be a nice feature for those who often get kicked off of the TV by others.@FluxWaveZ: there is already a solution for that, it's called having multiple TV's. I still don't understand how that's supposed to be awesome
@Zor said:Other than the Virtual Boy, Nintendo's stuff tends to work really well. The biggest failure of the Wii right now, is that the third parties aren't coming out with good games for it. The Nintendo games, are amazing (Most of them, SMG 1 and 2 are two of the best games out there, imo).So yeah, I said it before, and i'll say it again. No one can out Crazy, Nintendo when it comes to video game systems. That kinda defines Nintendo. Really cool and original stuff, bur rarely works very good...
I felt the collective sighs of Nintendo fans worldwide.
They said they want to give the hardcore an option too. However I think the controller is giving more of an impression that they are much further detracted from the non casual gamer then we thought. Perhaps I am wrong, who knows what will happen. Third party games better be great on this thing.

They must have saw how the iPad was selling, and figure they needed to react with that in mind, and not what MS and Sony was doing.
While everyone else is too busy staring at their screens with a confused look on their faces, I've been totally converted.
Haven't owned a Nintendo system since the SNES. Laughed at the Wii when it was announced. Laughed at the Wii while watching every Nintendo E3 conference since.
TOTALLY GETTING THIS
First thing that pops into my mind looking at the controller is an RPG. You always have to go into a menu to access your items and equipment and such. You could totally have that screen available the whole time, in the controller.
That thing totally just eliminated the need for pause menu screens.
Sure, DS did it, but this is a console with graphicals capabilities at PS3+ level.

@Zor said:Yeah, and the same issue might happen to Wii-U, if Nintendo can't teach the third parties on how to use the system. Nintendo is like a genius, that doesn't like talking to the people he is working with, so while he does great, everyone else in his department, does a losey job and get fired.@filipholm said:I have to agree with you, SMG 1 and 2 were amazing. You realize you would have to pause playing the game in order to sort through what you want to grab, right?
