Games I will willfully admit to being an apologist for

List items

  • RE0 seems to get a bad rap among the Resident Evil fanbase. Not the same way that 5 does, but in a more quiet "This game wasn't all that great" kinda way. Let's be fair. Zero does nothing to advance the plot of the franchise and its unique two-person mechanic is never used in a particularly clever or interesting way. That being said, it does as good a job as REmake in establishing a specific mood and is actually quite challenging. Is it great? Perhaps not. Inventory Management is an absolute hell and Leech Zombies are incredibly annoying. Personally, I think Code Veronica is the bad apple of the old games, but that's a topic for another time.

  • Of all of the games on this list that can truly be "apologized" for, this is the one I will most undoubtedly get the most flak for. Dragon Age 2 is not a good game. I know this. You know this. It's the same length as the first game despite clearly only having enough content and assets for something half of that. All of your choices are given a middle finger and the ending is atrocious. HOWEVER, I think most of the supporting cast is well done and I still think the combat is quite good. Really. Honestly.

  • Heroes IV was originally going to be on this list too, but then I realized that I don't really need to apologize for it because it's not a questionable game, merely a different one that doesn't succeed with everything that it tries. Heroes VI is the same way. Except that I don't think the changes they made are necessarily good for the franchise. They made it more strategic and theoretically viable for multiplayer, but at the cost of a lot of the personality that makes the older games so great. Still, it's quite fun and actually makes one have to think, on occasion.

  • I apologize for Final Fantasy V in the sense that I apologize that you suck for not liking it. So what if the story is the most generic cliched dreck even by Final Fantasy standards? So what if the characters are kinda forgettable and boring? So what if the localization on the GBA version tries way to hard to be funny? It's got the job system. And that's really all that matters?

  • I imagine that FFX-2 is unredeemable if you are one of those people who actually likes Final Fantasy X. I don't, and thus I find the lighthearted story that is a borderline self-parody to be hilarious in its dumbness, just like how I think that the battle system is actually quite good.
