I'm probably wrong, but it feels like Fire Escape is a dig at all 3 of them escaping CBS interactive in the past year or two. I'm probably wrong and the actual explanation is much less ... incendiary.

I only scanned through some of this, but I really appreciated Mike and Mary's impassioned and detailed explanation of why HL Alyx is so special to Dan who kind of brushed it off to that point. I feel like it's the sort of thing we've been missing at GB since Austin left.

Yeah that's probably the most I've been compelled to hear about Alyx since it launched. I'm glad it was given a lot of depth and people found it that compelling.

Also bonus points to Mary for saying the quiet part out loud about Spelunky 2 which, as a big Spelunky fan, I found myself agreeing with quite a lot. Secretly the hottest take of the night.

Sure, a lot of games are bad story tellers, even the ones that are built to be these prestige story-based games but it's always been odd to me when people verbalize it as a principle or idea. I just don't see the point to it, other than maybe being needlessly gatekeepy, when art can be whatever.

Even though Dan is way better about it then he used to be.

I don't know if a personal opinion can be "gatekeepy" in the way the word is usually meant. It would certainly be incredibly self-limiting if they really ignored story, but I don't take it that literally.

After years of working in games media and being expected to have opinions on video game stories which are mostly retread boilerplate, I think "I'm not here for the story" is almost a defense mechanism to avoid pointless discussion. As long as they can still get excited about story when something comes along they actually think is good - and they clearly still can - it's fine.

I feel like the sentiment that games should only be about gameplay/mechanics has been floated in many iterations over the years and is no less frustrating every time I see it. This is a pretty mild version of that so I'm not too bothered. Hence why I'd call it more of an oddity more than anything.

Eh. I don't go into any game deciding that I'm going to ignore story, but I think they're absolutely right to say few games tell stories well. Of course I tend think the only medium that really tells stories well is books, so I accept I'm probably the weird one.

What's actually crazy is believing Metal Gear is the pinnacle of video game storytelling.

This was a lot of fun to listen to over the Christmas Eve as I was prepping presents. I think what made this less exhausting than the GB ones over the past years is really the paring down to 3 people. It was cozier that way and it reflected them more directly.

P.S. Hearing grown adult humans say they don't come to games for stories will always eat my brain and soul away at the same time. But I do appreciate Mahardy going to bat for KRZ.

If you told me G4 coming back as part of Quibi I would have believed it.

Everything about it was ill-considered from the start, from the nostalgia play to some of the people featured. But of course, if people tried to actually revive G4 in a meaningful way by focusing on new and marginalized talent, then a bunch of bigoted nerds would come out of the woodwork to defend the "sanctity" of G4 that never existed as a racist dog whistle.

Anyway, eff Adam Sessler and double eff Chris Hardwick.

It's funny how the new Doom is taking the exact arc the original ones did where it was a classic the first go, a harder and messier sequel despite having more stuff, and then eventually it dwindles to focus on people who are way too good and deep in.

So next in the cycle is a divisive horror-themed Doom that is really just an excuse to show off fancy lighting and rendering.

I'm going to miss Clue Crew. Fingers crossed we can finally figure out that awful vegetable puzzle and solve the Secret of Shadow Ranch before the end.

Wish her the best, especially with *gestures wildly at everything going on*

I get speculating on GB but people being sacked as part of the deal should not be forgotten. The way it's sold as "business as usual" is exactly how they keep getting away with it. It was the thing I was afraid of and it immediately makes me skeptical of RV more than I already was.

I know many here think that we shouldn't comment on these goings on, since doesn't affect us primarily, and that those it did affect should have privacy. But man, the way they went about it... and the fact that they're doing it now, we should say we find it disgraceful.

Downplaying the commentary I think is more directed at arm-chair business analysis and hyper-focus on GB over the bigger picture. Being aware and angry about how people were done dirty here is what we should be doing.

And it hits even harder knowing just how fractured the media world is right now. Sure, some people will get snapped up but maybe not everyone and it takes a toll on everyone regardless. Layoffs should be treated as a dire thing that it is.

Spreading the word about this is important. I don't know the dev's positions really so it's a moot point. Standing firm against Blizzard disallowing this shit makes more sense because, they're not under the same pressure except losing money.

And yes, any time I see strong anti-Chinese sentiment coming from arm-chair randos online, it's almost always in the context of dog whistle racist shit.
