GOTY 2016

So here it is, my 2016 game of the year list. I think there are a few games on my list that will probably be on a lot of lists, and a few that probably aren't. There were some big surprises for me this year like just how good Hitman ended up being, and how many hours I have put in Ultimate Chicken Horse, and even how a licensed game based on a failed television show ended up on my list.

I probably would have had some other games on this list such as DOOM or Owlboy if I had played them, but there are still plenty of 2016 releases I have not played yet.

List items

  • I did not get Hitman until black Friday when I got a code from Gamestop for $15. I waited for so long because I have an aversion to paying full price for a digital game, but this is one time I wish I had done so.

I have been LOVING this game immensely. So much so I think I would actually put this in the running for one of my favorite games of all time.

I absolutely LOVE the so many ways a level in this game can be completed. I have been loving the experience so much that I really wish I had gotten into this at the beginning to experience it in its episodic nature. I also wish I had gotten in on all those elusive targets.

I would recommend anyone try this game out, I think it really has a wide appeal.

  • I ended up buying Ultimate Chicken Horse on the day of release after watching the Giant Bomb duders play it. I have played it for something like 50 hours since release and I have loved every second of it.

I have played it mostly in local co-op, but have also played some of the online mode with some friends that I know and in both cases it has been really great. The game continues to get updates and content added which keeps me coming back to it.

I don't expect that this will be on a lot of game of the year lists this year, but I really hope it did well for itself.

  • This is another game that I ended up getting right at the end of the year. Civ V was one of my most played games on Steam so I was super excited for Beyond Earth when it came out. Well, Beyond Earth came and went and I put something like 10-15 hours of it and it lost my interest.

This brings us to Civ VI and my excitement was renewed when it looked it was returning to the series roots a little more.

I haven't played it too much yet, but I have played it enough to know that I completely love this game.

  • The Battlefield series is one I have always loved, even 3 and 4. I got pretty excited when I heard they were going to World War I.

I had a ton of fun playing through the campaign, although even on hard it was fairly easy. The graphics seem really great and they nailed the atmosphere, despite taking a few liberties with the time period.

The multiplayer has kept me coming back over and over, even more than Call of Duty and Titanfall 2.

  • Another big shooter that came out towards the end of the year. I have to say that I used to absolutely love the Call of Duty series and put hundreds of hours into the multiplayer of all the games up until about Ghosts, which I dropped off on real quick.

I feel like the Titanfall and Battlefield series have all but completely replaced Call of Duty multiplayer for me.

I really love the multiplayer in Titanfall 2. I like how it is still fast pace, but I don't have to worry about being shot in the back within a second or two of spawning like I do in Call of Duty. I also really like that the size of the maps is bigger, something that totally lacks in the Call of Duty series now days.

The single player campaign was fairly fun, and was the most challenging of the big three shooters this year, but was still not too bad. I thought the campaign was fun, but pretty standard fare, except for that one part of the game somewhere in the middle that introduces a different mechanic that I really thought was a lot of fun.

  • This one is actually for the remaster of the game. While I really liked the remaster of Grim Fandango, I love the remaster of Day of the Tentacle. I was a huge fan of the LucasArts adventure games back in the day with Monkey Island being one of my favorite series of all time.

There is so much personality and great dialog in this game, as well as some fun puzzles. If anyone out there is a fan of the original, or even adventure games but somehow missed this, get it now.

  • What a great game to just chill out and lose some time in. I certainly haven't played this nearly as much as some other people on my friends list, but I still played it a lot considering my average time in games.

I had a lot of fun just doing the mundane things such as tending my crops and fishing. The art style is also a big draw for me here as I am a sucker for a game that looks like it was inspired by the SNES.

  • I am nowhere near done with this one, but I already know that I love it. I ended up buying the SteelBook double pack from Amazon for me and my wife to both have a copy of the game.

I immediately liked this game more than I did X and Y or Black and White. I really like the change of pace when it comes with the environments and art style.

Other than that it still seems like more Pokemon, and I like me some Pokemon.

  • I got hooked on Enter the Gungeon almost immediately. I really enjoy the mix of Rogue-Like and the overhead shooter.

I have played this game quite a bit and am still not very good at it, but I sure do have a ton of fun playing it anyway. And again like many others on this list I really love the art style.

  • Now for the game I don't expect to see on anyone else's top lists this year. While it is not the longest or most technically impressive game, it sure does have a lot more going on than people would think.

I would have never thought that a licensed game based on a reboot of a failed TV series would have been anything to hold my attention for more than a few minutes, let alone end up as one of my favorites from the year.

I really enjoyed the different scenarios that are set up using the main characters special powers. The game goes places a couple of times that I didn't see coming and totally enjoy.

I would really urge people to at least give this a try.
