The real Citizen Kane games list.

Here's a list of my top 10 games that remind me of the hoopla that is the Citizen Kane comparison to Video Games. For those not knowing what's going on, here's Kotaku's article on the subject.

1. Grim Fandango

Heard of film noir, well, here's game noir.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Took the elements of a classic action adventure game and incorporated them into a 3D realm. Pure magic.

3. Half-Life

There were plenty of shooters out there and then came Half Life.

4. Grand Theft Auto III

The kid in me wanted to play in this sandbox and it did not disappoint my mature soul.

5. Super Mario 64

Platformers would never be the same again.

6. Resident Evil 4

B horror movie franchise that got a AAA action upgrade.

7. The Sims

Reality television became big in 2000, so did this game.

8. The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

As a reviewer once said, step out of the sewers and hello National Geographic wonderland.

9. Halo: Combat Evolved

The behemoth from Bungie brought multiplayer console gaming into the 21st century.

10. BioShock

Say what you will, but this game was a moving cinematic experience.

Exactly. This is pretty much the perfect list of games that could be accepted as the "Citizen Kane" of games, even though I think that's really stupid. Games should define themselves, not feed off of definitions made by other mediums.

The only thing I would add is Tetris.

I gotta through Half Life 2 and Starcraft into the mix. Good list though.

I thought about Half Life 2, but it was Half Life on steroids plus physics. I wanted to put a RTS or even a turn based game on the list, but in the end, I left them out. It probably would have come down to Civilization or Starcraft, with Starcraft getting the nod because of the multiplayer aspect.

I'm sure you can recreate Citizen Kane in The Sims... minus the sled of course.

@Dalai: With the evolution of Sims, I bet Sims 3 could do Citizen Kane even Rosebud.

I didn't like Oblivion, though it was obviously a step in the right direction. Perhaps Fallout 3 is more fitting?

NO, NO, NO! that's not the reason on why Halo1 was such a special game! GOD!

Limited weapon management (only two weapons), left hand grenade throws, unforced open-ended design, gun bludgeoning, inspiring sci-fi story that games now copy till this day (and fail), and a remarkable health system.

I simply dislike it when people misjudge the presents that Halo lend to the FPS genre.

You know, thanks for educating me. But there again, was it not known for it's multiplayer excellence and gameplay.

Seems like a solid list and every title on the list is more of a step in video games than the Metroid Prime games which although good have done nothing for a genre of gaming or gaming as a whole.
