Games I've Played This Year: 2016

Hello All,

I've played a lot of games this year. Some of them were released this year and most of them were not. All of these were at least started this year. They don't include the multiplayer games I keep coming back to that were released years ago (Hearthstone, Call of Duty 4 (360 version), Titanfall). The order based on what I think of those games. Most of them were really great!

Here's a list of those games!

List items

  • An incredible campaign with possibly the best button prompt of the year along with some the best multiplayer on the Xbox One. Can't recommend this game enough.

    Please support this!

  • Surprise of the year? Maybe, but I probably shouldn't have been surprised based on how Bethesda has handled their 1st person games the last 5 years.

An amazing campaign with some of the best music in a game all year. I kept telling myself "man, this is fucking awesome" constantly throughout the campaign and I think that says it all.

  • What a weird game! At the surface it seems a lot like Limbo with visuals and the tone, but then at a later part of the game it takes a hard left turn and completely floored me.

A lot of the talk of "are games art?" should be centered around this game because every single frame of animation has been looked over and perfected.

It's probably the closest thing I've played to a perfect game all year.

  • WOW. There is an intensity to this game that few can match. Even for being an 8 year old game, the environments look outstanding. The atmosphere had me through the whole game. Even if there were some strange turret sections that felt out of place, it's still a fantastic game that is absolutely still worth playing.

EA! Please make a new Dead Space.

  • This is an all-time classic according to many people and it didn't disappoint. It still holds up with just about everything. The art style and gameplay are great and the level design is mind blowing.

  • Crystal Dynamics really pushed themselves with this one. I thought the first Tomb Raider was overrated. It was OK game with an amazing presentation.

In this entry, the gameplay is improved, the world is more open, the characters aren't cardboard cut outs and the graphics are mind blowing. I hope people play this game because it is awesome.

  • A very cool game with terrible boss fights. I loved playing as Adam Jensen and seeing how the world reacts to him. The atmosphere is great even if the faces and some voice acting are not great.

  • I don't think South Park is funny. That should have turned me off from this game, but it didn't. There are some moments that made me go "wow, they went there". I loved how when everything was getting super ridiculous, the writers still kept it wrapped in that these kids are out playing a game.

  • I played a bit of the first Dark Souls and that's about it. I love the speed of the combat in this game. The world has amazing atmosphere and design. After going through a truck load of enemies while exploring the world, finding a shortcut that leads to the beginning is really cool.

I can see why people are so obsessed with From Software's games.

  • Through the first three episodes, this would have been my GOTY from last year. There are some unbelievable moments in this game. They are jaw dropping and have still stuck with me. It made me feel uncomfortable and I can appreciate that.

It is unfortunate once the great mystery is solved, the game just falls off a cliff. Ending a game is hard and this game is no exception to that.

  • Car soccer? That sounds dumb, right? Nope! Turns out this game is awesome. The developers continued support of this game keeps me coming back.

I highly recommend watching Danny O'Dwyer's NoClip doc on it if you haven't.

  • This game has no dialogue. That may sound weird, but it's part of the game's strength. The art direction and music allow it to be a really cool experience. Even if the last 30 minutes flew off of the rails.

  • When I first started playing this I couldn't figure out what the big deal was. I then went and tried to acquire all of the collectibles in world 1 and my mind was blown. This game tested my patience, but the reward was worth it.

  • I love the world of this game. I can see why this game didn't sell well and why a next-gen sequel still hasn't been released. I just wish there was more to do in it.

  • Just an all around good time. This is a game that doesn't take itself too seriously and that is something I can appreciate. It's probably the closest thing we will get to Burnout Paradise, so I'll take it.

  • It's a Blizzard. It has a cool art style and it is ridiculously polished, but I can't stick with it. I just don't like these Team Fortress-style multiplayer shooters a lot. I enjoyed my 10 hours with it however.

  • Another first person game! The platforming was OK at first, but then once you start figuring out how to upgrade skills and weapons, it is a blast.

  • This game pays homage to games like Mega Man with great respect. I am also really bad at it. I decided not to finish this game because I didn't want to bang my head against the final boss and ruin my thoughts on the game. The music and secrets are really cool.

  • Only play this game in COOP. I hope they actually do manage to fix this game because it could be incredible.

  • This game is not funny. It tries too hard and it rubs me the wrong way. With all of that said, it is a fun game to play with cool weapons and boss fights. Also the colors just pop off the screen in this game. It is really cool to look at while playing.

  • This might be the worst Halo campaign I've played. 343 tripled down on the story stuff from Halo 4 and it's gotten worse. The game looks and plays really great, but the presentation of the story it bad. Cut scenes end abruptly, characters are implied to know each other even if it was never hinted at before and there are some inexplicable decisions that some characters make that don't make sense.

At least the multiplayer was cool!

  • This is another Gears game. I think it might be the worst Gears campaign I've played, but it's still solid.

  • This is another game that I think is overrated. The gameplay is servicable at best. The situations the story puts you in are kind of nuts and I sort of lost track of what was happening about 3/4 of the way through. At least it was short?

  • A fun driving game. I can see why people who are into rally racing are into it. The menus are dope.

  • This game is bad.
