Great video. Got a lot of FOMO about the Playdate this week due to the reviews. Similar to the Steamdeck I tried to get my order in within seconds of the ordering opening but ran into issues immediately where their international payment partner fell over (I'm in Canada) and nearly all the initial units got sold to US residents since that payment system was working. By the time they fixed the issue I ended up in the 3rd Late 2022 group but I guess at least I should get mine this year.
Been fiddling with the SDK. The simulator app is pretty good, hard to simulate the crank or accelerometer but I'll try to get something up and running before I get my unit.
I'm really enjoying this game so far. I've only played through the New Hope stuff but it mixes the free exploration and levels really smoothly and feels like it has a level of polish that starts to feels like Sony first party games at points. The game was directed by the same guy as LEGO Lord of the Rings which is my favorite entry in the series.
I got over LEGOs talking a while back. They don't use the dialog from the movies like they've done in some of their games because they wrote a lot of new dialog. So it's largely sound-alikes (or the Clone Wars cast for the prequel stuff). It's a bit jarring but I got over it quickly. It is nice they still have the mumble option but I think this game has too much dialog for that. And some of the in-jokes are pretty funny.
There were reports last year of some real crunch culture at TT Games which is a shame. But I'm hoping the public awareness of that and hopefully an improved toolchain for this game results in a reduction of that in the future. This game is pretty special and I'm looking forward to what they do next.
My co-workers and myself prior to the pandemic got way way into MK8. Where we were literally playing it every lunch and at the end of every workday.
We started entering into a tournament at a local bar and won it three times in a row. At that point we felt kinda guilty and stopped entering that tournament but kept up play in the office right up until we switched to remote work.
Some of us are back in the office now and we've been extra busy so we haven't actually started playing again but I'm hoping this DLC re-sparks the need to drift.
I've played a bit of these first set of courses and I think their pretty good. Ninja Hideaway is definitely the stand-out. Though I will say it's a little weird how these courses we not really re-worked with the gravity stuff in the same way that classic courses in the base game were reworked with that feature. Like the wallriding in Toad's Turnpike. Wondering if that's indicative of a design change or maybe the time they had to make these courses.
Good review to go out on if this is the last. And yeah I didn't need your review to know if I was going to play, in fact I played the first level of the campaign before reading this review but I enjoyed the read and am interested in your opinion nonetheless.
Lucy is totally right that The Meg never became the meme sensation that Snakes on a Plane did. But the thing I find interesting is that after Snakes on a Plane became a meme New Line did reshoots to change the movie from a PG-13 movie to an R rated movie that the internet expected it to be but then by the time it actually came out in theaters the movie basically bombed.
Meanwhile The Meg grossed half a Billion dollars. Obviously there was a larger international market for that movie but I think it does go to show that memes don't translate to box office sales.
I put my reservation in right as it launched but I had store issues for 40 minutes so by the time I got through my reservation was for Q2 2022. But at least by the time mine is ready to ship I'll have a lot of info about it and can decide if I actually want to buy it.
My gaming laptop that I used to take on trips is getting pretty old so I was considering this as an alternative since most of the stuff I use for work has Linux versions so it would work well for that docked.
I'm really curious how they are dealing with games that have launchers because I know from friends who primary run Linux that the Lutris and Proton don't play well with launchers, especially games that do a lot of their updating through launchers like Final Fantasy 14.
You could install WIndows but it seems like you'd lose a lot of the Steamdeck UI overlay features doing so.
