Wasn't that the cux of Advent Rising?

EDIT: Also I think the weird twist at the end of the Book of Swords series by Fred Saberhagen was that it was Earth all along far in the future and that all the magic and demons came from remnants of our civilization before we nuked ourselves into oblivion.

Yeah Advent Rising is the closes thing I can think of in regards to the original post. True, humanity isn't extinct, but the plot revolves around how they use to be one of the most powerful species in the universe and they were all but wiped-out by another species.

I could understand the scorn if it wasn't a Bethesda game, but it is. With crazy levels of openness and complexity you are going to have crazy levels of bugs. It goes with the territory. If you want a perfectly bug-free game, play a 2D platformer and hope for the best; if you want a game that pushes the envelope, expect some problems.

In a medium where story is only required to provide context for level design, and characters are borderline unnecessary beyond giving the player feedback, it seems a little silly that some people are so mired in the minutiae.

I couldn't agree more and its one of the reasons I have never really got on board with the idea of sexism still being rampant in the game industry. Video games by and large don't have characters ... they have caricatures; an exaggeration of both physical and emotional attributes to the point where they rarely reflect a true human being. The oversize grunt male persona is just as bad as the overly sexy female persona.

I personally think that reviews are very helpful when they are well written and knowledgeable. One of my favorite reasons for visiting this site is for the unique view points expressed by other gamers (especially Vinny since we have nothing in common gaming-wise), because they can help me appreciate new aspects of games that I either ignored or took for granted before. A well written review can provide so much helpful insight about the history of the game, the success or failure of the mechanics, and comparable games that you should either stay away from or maybe also purchase.

I think that the way they are handling map locking is bullshit, but I don't think they are going to change it because the OP is in such a small minority. Jeff brought it up in the Quicklook ... if you are still playing Destiny avidly at this point, why wouldn't you buy the expansion? I feel bad for the OP, but his problem probably only affects 1% of the people still playing Destiny.

Like others have said patience is very important. But more importantly actually think about why you are dying. I've seen so many people get killed endlessly in the same dumb cycle of mistakes.

That's somewhat disappointing to hear. I really loved how different each weapon handled in Dark Souls. Do weapon's still have move sets and different handling? Or is it just 3-5 general weapon categories that handle differently from each other, but for example all hammers would still swing the same and have similar reach and speed?

Quick question based off one of the reviews I read about this game; do you just basically find stronger and stronger gear/weapons as you play through the game ala Diablo, or is it like Dark Souls were you can use any weapon through out the entire game as long as you upgrade it properly?

I'm in the small minority by the looks of it that believes personal opinion should be a very small part of a review. In the entirety of a review, personal opinions and experiences can be helpful, but when it comes down to scoring and giving advice I think it should be handled logically and with very little opinion. A good reviewer should identify the goals and experiences the Developers' wanted to create in the game, question if the game met those goals and if not where were the shortcomings; challenge if the experiences and mechanics created by the Developers actually improved gameplay and made the game worth it to buy; highlight the features of the game; clearly identify and explain the target audience and who will hate this game; compare the game to its peers if applicable; and breakdown how the game handles itself on a technical level.
