This is too much the best time to be playing video games! Too many games!

I am no longer a "gamer"

That's right. I opt out of being called that, because I don't fit into that space anymore. Let us check what the criteria are for being called a gamer.

  • Like to play games, and do so almost every day.
- I do. Some days I only play for half an hour or so, but I mostly play more than that. And if I don't play at all I most likely read about games at least. So I got this point covered.
  • Know things about almost every platform of gaming.
- I do. I read a lot about gaming in general, so I know more and more about this every day. A "Check" on this point as well.
  •  Own at least one gaming platform.
- I own a gaming PC, Xbox 360, Wii and a DSXL. So I got this as well.
  • Bitch and moan about a variety of minor things having to do with gaming.
- Hmm. I don't do this.
  • Be extremely negative towards something you have never tried because it is new.
- I don't do this either...

So there you have it. To be called a gamer these days it seems you have to be negative and bitch about things. Let me write down a few of the things I have seen around the internet the past year(s) or so:
- [insert popular game title] suck! It is the worst game ever to come out!
- They should just stop making Kinect. It just doesn't have any use at all. I'm not going to buy it, so why bother?
- Consoles are for retards. If you cannot use a computer, you shouldn't be called a gamer.
- Causal gamers aren't gamers. I wish they all died, 'cause then we might get better games on the Wii.
- The Wii is a waste of space. Nothing but shovelware and casual crap no-one wants.
- Dead Rising 2 is going to suck because it has a time limit and the saving is crap.
- Steam is a cancer in gaming. I hope it crash and burns so that we non DRM people win.

I am not saying it is wrong to dislike something. You can hate Halo all you like, you can think the Wii is stupid. But if you cannot get it into your skull that someone think the opposite, then you are stupid. I don't like Metal Gear Solid. I don't like Final Fantasy. You do? Great! We are different then. We have different taste when it comes to games. That is what so many gamers these days seem to forget.

*sigh*
I hereby opt out of all that. I am no longer a gamer. I'm just a guy who like to play video games now and then. I love Steam, I love my Xbox and I am hopeful that Kinect will turn out good. I love the time limit in DR, and I am sure I will love it in DR2 as well. I don't like DRM, but it is not going to stop me buying games I really want.
I am optimistic about things, which means I don't fit into the gamer mold these days.  Everyone else who are optimistic about things are free to join me in having fun. Which gaming is really about.

I guess this whole blog post is a bit ironic. Here I am, bitching and moaning about being sick of gamers bitching and moaning. But I just had to get this rant out.

Gaming isn't about bitching or moaning or being negative, it's about having fun damnit. Those people aren't proper gamers, they're corrupted gamers! Help stop the corruption!

@Durandir: Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do man, I totally agree. Makes me sad too the state of things today. I sometimes think its the younger kids today (im 33). i remember in the old days, we were just glad to get games..... If I got a new game for my Master System every 6 MONTHS I would have been stoked. not so the greedy, self-aggrandizing me generation that is coming up through the ranks....

Yeah, I would not alienate myself from the term "Gamer" (Although I don't use it all that often), but I do agree, I despise a large amount of gamers for the reasons you posted.
Over the last few days my hatred of the word "Noob" and the way it is used, half of the gaming community seem to be extremely Negative and not at all constructive in their criticisms both on forums and in games.
I agree strongly with your blog post.

@Shirogane: Exactly. Yet all I see all over message boards are negative talk towards new things. Take GoG.com for instance. A great site. The forum though, is not so great, because a mere mention of Steam will send any thread crashing down with hate towards said digital distributor.
I just want to have fun. Steam provides a lot of fun games. Ergo, Steam is awesome. If you don't like it, that is fine. But they way people go on about how bad it is makes it look like Steam murdered their dog or something.

@Lordborg909:
I am 23 myself. But I don't think age has much to do with it. Again, take GoG.com. I think most members there are older than me. Yet they still bitch about Steam.

@buwchbach: Yes, the word "noob" should die. When I come into a new game, I am a "newbie", but that is a different thing.
Some communities are good though. Like Shores of Hazeron. I haven't seen a friendlier player base ever before. If you ask a question in that game, no matter how stupid, people will answer.

@blacklabeldomm:  The hate for Halo is ludicrous really. So many hate it because it is popular. A lot of people hate it because there are "so many games now!" Yeah, 'cause there aren't many games in other franchises, like Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid. I don't hear people bitch about MGS having too many games.
I love Halo, but mostly because of all the backstory. And that you can only get in the books. Seeing how many gamers also hate to read...

I know what you mean, however what your talking about is the average forum troll mentality not gamers as a whole. Sadly forums seem to attract mostly the immature annoying types who are too stupid or ignorant to form a thought before posting. What you are annoyed with is the 12 year old kids, and adults who act like 12 year old kids, flooding video comments and forums.

Sadly all you can do is try to find a nice group of mature people to stick with them exclusively and ignore the rest. Avoid pick up groups while playing games, unless absolutely necessary, and just post your two cents on a message board when you feel like saying something and move on.

I have been feeling the same way you have been for awhile now, and when I started doing the above I started to enjoy doing things more. Something to think about.

EDIT: Also, I too dislike the n00b insulting meta game that goes on in every online game. When I log onto a server and start hearing some one insulting another person I just immediately go back to my server list and find a new server. I don't want to hear people bitching and insulting one another over anything. Trash talking is one thing, but some of these idiots that go on and on for hours at a time with the most asinine things they say. It's like they don't even realize that they are only making themselves look like idiots.

@crusader8463: While you are right about this being mostly kids trolling, I have seen so many instances of mature decent people being like this. Heck, the majority of users on The Escapist hate, or at least dislike, Halo. That site is what I would call one of the best sites when it comes to smart users. The majority of gamers all over the internet already hate Kinect.

If trolls was the only people being negative like this, then I wouldn't care. Trolls be trollin'. But this has become widespread enough now, so I just had to rant about it. I think the final drop in the glass was the thread on Duke Nukem Forever on GoG.com. Instead of talking about DKF it went on to be a thread bitching about what consoles do to multiplatform games, how much Borderlands sucked because it also came out on consoles etc.

This community I like though. Sure there are negative people here as well, but all in all people are good. I still enjoy games, so the negative people haven't won yet!

@Lordborg909: I usually never like multiplayer games because of how most gamers are. I play the occasional TF2, because there you can just have fun. CS though... played it once or twice. Being badmouthed because I suck at a game I have never played before is just stupid. This has made me develope an aversion to MP in games, now mostly playing MP only with people I know well. This is why my Empire in Shores of Hazeron is a one-man Empire.

@Bellum: It's not, bro. I like it when people disagree, because then I might learn something new. Discussing things is always a great way to to so. But when people hate something just because it is a) new, or b) popular, you throw rationality out the window. I don't see it as a wrong thing to do if I bash people like that.

Oh god, Left 4 Dead has one of the absolute WORST player base in the world. It has gotten so bad that I just flat out will not play anything but a friends game when I log in. Thankfully I have enough people on my steam list to always get one going when people are online, but god dam that game is practically unplayable other wise. I don't think I have ever been able to play a PUG game of L4D without someone quitting after the first or second round, or have the team be made up of people who just insult and scream at one another to the point where I quit after one or two rounds just to stop listening to them.

I hope they add in a voting system that is linked to a players steam account so that you can vote down the bad people. At least that way you can keep kicking people at the server list who have a bad ranking, and try to weed out the idiot over time.

You don't have to follow a set of criteria to be a gamer all you have to do is enjoy your passion thats all.  So if you enjoy games then your a gamer I mean there is no difference from someone who plays hours on end to someone who might only get in a couple of minutes they both still get the same out of it.
And as for the culture thats formed around gameing its the same with everything else these days everyone has an opinion and just wishes to express it.  All you can really do is just hope that places like GB still exsist where we can all have a say and get along with out resorting to trolling.

You just have to like the achievement porn that games are and if you like it because of itself, because of the chemical reactions that happen in your brain, kind of a drug, you are a gamer.

If you feel like you are wasting your time on something that is not real when playing a game, or you do it for any other reason, then you are not a gamer. Gaming is about achieving.

End of story.

Scuse the language, but I was playing a game of SC2 the other week (One of my first MP SC2 as well), did so badly, and as my 2v2 partner logged off he called me a "Retarded c*nt that cant play this game and should die in a fire" which I thought was a tad over the top... but what would I know?

@TwoLines:  I agree that the name "gamer" is silly. Which Yahtzee seems to agree with you on. Yet, it is easier to say than "person who like video games". So I am kinda torn on that.

@BunkerBuster:
Oh God, marketing people...

@crusader8463: Yes, sadly that is the rule. Oh well.

@Lordborg909:  I would say that is slightly over the top. That is also one of the reasons why I don't bother playing MP with people I don't know.

@AmonHouston: It is fine if you don't like the time limit, but you wouldn't go so far as to say that the time limit ruins the game completely? Surely even people who don't like the time limit must see that without it, the game would be boring as hell. You would have no sense of urgency, thus no sense of panic, which a zombie uprising should have plenty of. That is what a lot of people say. One guy even made a forum post saying the "developers of DR2 doesn't listen to the community at all" because they still have a time limit in the second game.

In a barrage of opinions this a first original observation. And it just happens to completely void your previous credo. It took a long-ish rant to get there, but you really should embrace this thought.
Is it cute irony or obvious self-contradiction?

As a lot of people have already commented, the term 'gamer' is incredibly silly. Unfortunately fanboyism is just human nature, it will always happen; it's just a way for people to justify things to themselves and sometimes it does get quite extreme.

I remember that competition on GOG that implied that Steam was Goliath and GOG was David. It was very 'us against them'; I also felt that was kind of inappropriate.

@Eurobum: First of all, you are smarter than me, using words and sentences that make little sense to my non-English brain. But I do think I get the gist of what you are saying.
It is certainly not "cute irony", but I wouldn't call it a self-contradiction either. The definition of a rant says this: " A rant is a speech or text that does not present a well-researched and calm argument, rather, it is typically an attack on an idea, a person or an institution."
It is also the tenth solo of Ian Hunter, but that has nothing to do with anything.

It was a rant. A spur of the moment venting on all the negativity that has been spewed on all kinds of gaming the past year. I am an optimistic person, but even I get sick of things like that. So I had to get it out, to get it out of my system. Sure, I could have just written it down in private, but then again, I had a blog. Why not use it? Why not see if there are more people thinking what I am thinking? Seeing all the replies here has made me more optimistic again. It helped. So I don't care if I more or less destroyed my point by making it, I managed to do what I set out to do. Or something. I don't know.
And for the record, there is no sarcasm in this post. So don't attack me for being sarcastic. I am not. Damn, this might seem sarcastic as well. To hell with it.

@Bellum:  But then how can you explain people hating Halo when they have never even played it? When confronting all the people who say they think Halo sucks by a poll on The Escapist a while back, about 50% had never played it. A bunch of people had just seen footage, and a minority hadn't even that. I can accept that my argument is a fallback argument most of the time, but when people hate something popular without really having a reason to, doesn't this mean they hate it because of its popularity?

@crusader8463: it is, but it is always better to know the truth, IMHO. The first step to solve a problem is to recognize there is a problem. As internet becomes a part of the society those who are better at it will be rewarded and the population will evolve, as usual. While trolls will be surrounded by anger having bad experiences in the internet nice people will get the most of it and get useful information.

The difference is that now evolution may act to the inner people, to whatever is under the mask, improving that part that was inaccessible before. Isn't that great?

@Trylks: I agree that I too prefer to know the truth, but some times the truth is so bad that you kind of wish you had the comfort of the lie back once the truth has been seen.

As for your optimistic outlike on things, I hope you are right. Personally, I lost faith in peoples ability to treat one another with respect and common decency unless it benefits them in some way a long time ago. Every where you look you see systems that promote and encourage corruption, lies and treating people badly, while places that are designed to help people are getting closed or bogged down with problems that they shouldn't have to deal with. Good people that have never done anything wrong and who have played by the rules all there lives getting taken advantage of or are being hurt, while bad people get benefits and all the breaks.

But what do I know. I'm Mr. Negative, and I always have been.

I don't really agree with pairing the term gamer with some of the more negative aspects of the culture. As others have said, a lot of this is a result of the internet and the anonymity it provides. It happens with everything where opinions can possibly conflict: sports, movies, literature, music - it isn't exclusive to video games.

I still know a ton of cool people that are into games, and that notion is really evident at events like PAX and Comic-Con. I've had the privilege to attend both, and the vibe there is a truly rewarding experience. I know that some people aren't able to go to those sorts of events, but they've reaffirmed my belief that the collective group know as "gamers" is far from all bad. There's still a hell of a lot of nice, friendly and passionate people out there playing games.

Having said that, I don't put much importance behind the term gamer or who it applies to. As long as you enjoy your personal time playing games, that's all that really matters.

@crusader8463: sometimes it looks like that, but that won't be for ever.

As an example, in most places when you see a cat in the street it will run away from you, cats are afraid of people, because they have treated them badly. However in some places, like some university campuses,  you may find cats are not afraid of people, those who are there are educated and treat them nicely.

It's not the norm, but there is hope.

People kind of define the term on their own whim anyway. If you choose to see the term as pejorative, that's just you. Any term you come up with for people who play games is going to become pejorative over time because most people who play games online are assholes and a lot of people who play games alone are socially inept. That's just the way it is.
Case and point, people itt quoting themselves as if they've just exceeded the profundity of Oscar Wilde. How egotistical do you have to be? lol

I don't know if I really agree with you. Yes with gaming talk mostly now centering around the internet you get a lot of trolls or people hating on everything they hate but that isn't what gaming is about. Being a gamer is having fun with what you're playing, reading about the latest news and getting excited about your favourite upcoming releases. There is always going to be idiots who don't argue a point well or who are so narrow minded you can't talk to them about anything, but don't all forms of media have these problems? I hope you can still consider yourself a gamer.

A gamer is a video game enthusiast, i.e. someone who is passionate about video games. With passion comes taste, with taste comes harshness, and with harshness comes bitching and moaning.

I'm not saying bitching about moaning about everything like, say, the people at /v/ is good -- it isn't -- but without some bitching and moaning, you really can't call yourself an enthusiast of anything.

Did you create this gamer criteria yourself, or did the League of Gamers come up with this?

You're a gamer, sorry. No need to act as if you're above all of us, because that's basically what you're saying. The claim that you don't fit into the criteria of what many of us on here place ourselves in, so you don't carry the negative association. Wrong. You're fucked, like all of us. We're all obese, awkward, and have lisps. One of us, one of us....

Actually, you have to be a gamer in order to be part of the League of Gamers.
