Ads on the Site

Just had it reconfirmed that those "Ads by Google" ads that have been showing up on the site are NOT supposed to be there. We're in contact with the guys we're partnered with for advertising and they should be gone shortly. Thanks to those who brought it up. Though, I have to say, this one that Brad found is pretty fucking hilarious:

NOBLE SIX, PLEASE REPORT. NOBLE SIX, RESPOND! NOBLE SIIIIIIXXXXX!!!!!!!
NOBLE SIX, PLEASE REPORT. NOBLE SIX, RESPOND! NOBLE SIIIIIIXXXXX!!!!!!!
With an ad-free option now available to members, there's always that temptation to allow more advertising onto the site, but that's not our current plan. We still want everyone to enjoy the site, whether they've chosen to become a paid member or not. Though the online advertising market still seems to be exploding around us, leaving layoffs and carnage in its wake, we're sticking to our original "fewer, better ads" idea. Adding paid memberships is one of the things that allows us to continue doing this.

Ideally, the ad market will figure itself out and allow us to run smarter advertising that doesn't immediately make your skin crawl and force you to run, screaming to a copy of Ad Block Plus. When all of that lines up, that, along with our paid members, are going to give us the fuel we need to grow. From new sites to new equipment to new personnel, all of us across all of these sites have ideas about where to go once the rest of the world catches up to us.

So, just to recap, here's your five-year plan:

1. Start websites.
2. ?????
3. Profit.
4. Buy fireproof suit, convince Will Smith to set me on fire, aim live camera directly at fire.
5. Oh, right, continue writing about video games and shooting interviews and being honest and stuff since that's why we're all actually here even though it sometimes seems like some of you totally don't care that we're covering games and just want us to film ourselves setting ourselves on fire.

Right now we're somewhere betweeen step 2 and 3, I think.

Thanks to all of you. Whether you've decided to slide us some cash or not, you really are the ones that make this possible. We'll surely hit some bumps along the way, but I can guarantee that we'll at least make it interesting to watch.

Thanks for the update on that, Jeff. I did find it rather odd that the site would embrace Google's ad system of questionable quality out of nowhere. I guess it's just Sixapart being a little too accustomed with less discerning customers?

Anyways, here's hoping you hit step 3 sooner than later. Consider step 4 a re-enactment of the Smash-A-Torium scene from Full Throttle if you need to connect it back to video games for the site's sake.

You don't need profit to set people on fire, trust me

Also, that myHalo ad looks like an iPod commercial gone horribly awry.

Oh, and keep up the good work. Use my $50 to buy a vibrating chair or something, you've earned it.

Definitely.  Fire does not care about profit margins... its only cares about having a freaking blast!!!
Here is to hoping you guys keep being the crazy game loving fools that we know and love you for!!

The recent Flood of awful MyHalo ads made me wish there was a user preference that would allow me to see them as well. Maybe I'll just install some creepy adware instead and pretend that you guys are getting money from that. :D

Haven't seen any of these myself. Glad you're acknowledging and sorting it out though.

What makes it difficult to get ads out there to non-US residents?

We might need to add something like that, if only because now that I'm a member (and yeah, I actually paid for it), I don't normally see ads... and I probably should see what's hitting our site, just to make sure everything's running A-OK.

We'd need to set up an overseas ad operation to get that going. It's an eventual goal, I suspect, but nothing we're prepared to handle right now. If you've ever wondered why some other game sites have UK versions, even though all the content is the same... that's why. Dollarzzzzz.

And by "Dollarzzzzz" I of course mean "Poundzzzzz" or "Eurozzzzz" or "Ringgitzzzzz."

@Jeff:  Wait a minute, does that mean that if the option to view ads even if you've paid does get implemented, I still won't be able to experience these life changing ads? Outrageous! How else can I protect my loved one?

While I'm a paid user and intend to soon get the annual membership, it's good to see a gaming site give a damn about how to properly approach ads on their website. GameTrailers.com is a total separate hell and one of the worst sites I've ever been on for throwing ads down your throat endlessly.

Keep up the great work guys and gals.

I too would like to see the ads. I want to know how to further support you guys. I'd also love to buy more crap from a GiantBomb Store of some sort.

Also, I'm no Level 50 Internet Veteran, but why are so many people against Amazon links? I go to Amazon every day, and I go to GiantBomb many times a day. If you guys had some link where I could click on games that I want to buy via Amazon, and that would send you a few extra cents, I'd be more than happy to do it. If you guys just find it ugly, then hide it somewhere. Just tell me where to go.

Explaining jokes is never a good idea. But, since you asked, it is both a "jab" at themselves and the community for some times getting so wrapped up in having fun and goofing off and (not really, but almost) forgetting what the main purpose of the site is.

Layer two of the joke is poking fun at both themselves and the community in that we are sadists who like to see people eat gross shit and set themselves on fire, and they are fucked up in that they are happy to do so.

No offense was meant. It's just them having fun. It's like when they make fat jokes.

Edit: Relax.

I saw an ad for sexy haloween costumes. I was pretty sure that that was either entirely unintentional, or entirely intentional. Thanks for clarifying.

Considering you can currently only advertise to about about half the audience? then, I suppose you want to get in on that Zenny train.

You'd think that some ad agencies would be set up to sort out international ad deals. Seems odd that you need to have an actual physical location, though I could see the companies who own the products demanding that as a requirement before working with you, or maybe it's a legal thing.

Still, if GBUK ever happens, i'm on it. I want to live the Whiskey Media dream. Then it's world domination from there.

Thanks for the info Jeff. However, I really wish there was some kind of  "medium" plan for the subscribers. As a Canadian (we don't have ads) without a smartphone and with no interest in the T-Shirt, paying 60$ is kinda tough to justify. I would gladly pay 25-30$ simply to support you guys (and maybe HD video lol) tough.

Good to hear that you guys and Whiskey are continuing to be smart about the ads on the site. The only down side is that after reading your five year plan I keep replaying a mental image of step 4 over and over in my head, wishing it was real. Seriously though, while the silly antics are a joy to watch I still love you guys for your excellent video game journalism above all else.

I don't think you can make $$$ of IMDB/Netflix (I think Netflix has some sort of new signup referral program though), but I wouldn't mind helping GB with Amazon game links as well.
