New Theme: Motorsports

Motorsports is a new theme in the database that can be applied at the game level.

I'll be going back to my last blog post about genres and themes and adding ones that seem meaningful in the near future. (So consider this post a second chance to suggest some).

Additionally, we will be moving to a new maximum of one genre per game. This means, obviously, that we will be adding a lot of genres to the system, like "Action-Adventure," which is used primarily to differentiate between the console definition of adventure (Legend of Zelda, Fable II) and the PC definition (Maniac Mansion, Broken Sword). Multiple themes will still be possible.

Also still thinking a lot about how to split the Shooter genre to account for the following types of game:

  • Modern third-person shooters like Gears of War and Max Payne
  • Forced scroll arcade shooters like Gradius and Xevious
  • Fixed-screen shooters like Galaga and Space Invaders
  • User-controlled scrolling shooters like Commando or Contra

Any thoughts that don't include the terms "shoot-'em-up" or "shmup" would be sincerely appreciated.

Maybe, "Fly-By Shooters?" I don't know. The shooter genre is just way too diverse for me to think about any more genres.

I don't know...maybe something like a sub-section of racing for WipeOut could be "Futuristic Racing". Another for Twisted Metal or Vigilante 8 would be "Combat Racing".

How about 'static shooter' for the fixed screen ones? 'Conveyor shooter' for the forced scroll ones. Perhaps 'free-scrolling shooter' for the metal slug types.
Those are just some quick thoughts.

I'm having trouble coming up with a set of usable names, but applying "shooter" to both Gradius and Gears of War seems a bit off.  Contra seems more like a "run and gun" than a "shooter."  Personally, I think "action" is a good way to describe it.

Well, it seems that what's given is enough.

Third-person shooter
Scroll shooter
Fixed-screen shooter
...err....free-scroll shooter?

Yeah I agree with the above here...

Gradius style = Scrolling Shooter
Contra style = Run & Gun Shooter
Space Invaders style = Fixed Screen Shooter

As for the new ones I don't know how you'd be able to really dillute it down from just plain old Third Person Shooter.  Over-the-shoulder Shooter sounds too long winded I think.

Thanks for the heads-up about the Motorsport theme.  I spent a good bit of time today doing up the Playstation Formula 1 page so this would fit perfectly.

Maybe just continue allowing multiple genres per game?

Or maybe we should just leave it "Shooter."

I know these games aren't everyone's cup-of-whatever, but to me there's a difference between a text adventure and interactive fiction.  Adventure is a rather specific genre type, with some of the usual things we expect from adventures.  Interactive Fiction may sound too broad, but I doubt anyone except the text-game crowd would like that attached to their work anyway.

IF goes beyond the adventure subset of games, so I think it should be the main go-to for text stuff, and if text-adventure should be there too, we'll get a lot of the older stuff, like Infocom's Hitchhiker'sGuide, Bureaucracy, A Mind Forever Voyaging, and so on, which have items, actions, and all of the features you'd expect from something like Day of the Tentacle, only in text instead of graphics.  But stuff that gets entered in the Interactive FIction Contest tends to be a lot broader, with some of them being more like a piece of fiction that you push in different directions through commenting.  They're still games, but I don't think I'd call them adventures.

I came up with a few others, but have forgotten them in the time it took for this subject to come up again :)  Knowing how you all plan on parsing genres into their sub-genres might help people figure out what they want to suggest.  How specific is it going to get?  Something like "enough to differentiate it from other games of the similar all-encompassing genre, but not so specific as to make it unique?"

The groups

  • 1st Person

  • 3rd Person

  • Arcade

work fine for me.

Perhaps I am but a simpleton but is there really a necessity to break everything down into such specifics? Wouldn't it be better to use the more vague industry accepted terms which would allow people to instantly understand?

Well, i could suggest the following:

~ Modern third-person shooterswould become  Tactical Shooters? (Or Tactical Advantage Shooters)

~ User-controlled scrolling shooters would become  Side Scrolling Shooters?

  • "Modern third-person shooters like Gears of War and Max Payne

  • User-controlled scrolling shooters like Commando or Contra"
Perfect if you ask me.

I'm all for having 1 genre each, but it will certainly make for a diverse list.
[edit: I see Comedy is listed.  Time for a Giant Bomb taxonomy guide!]

  • Forced scroll arcade shooters like Gradius and Xevious
  • Fixed-screen shooters like Galaga and Space Invaders
Given that your ship never moves in Time Pilot, does that fall here?  Probably not because it gives the sense of chasing ships...
  • User-controlled scrolling shooters like Commando or Contra
Can you go backward in Contra?  In Commando?  In Metal Slug?  I don't call that user-controlled.  At some point user-control crosses the line into Action, like Blaster Master.

Also while we're talking about lists, is there any way... any way at all, that the console list when adding Releases can be alphabetized?  Please, it's killing me. :)

I reckon that a Sub-Genre field is required to fill the void between Genre and Information-Overload-topia...ville.

Genre could be as it is currently (to save thousands of combined man-hours of page-editing), while Sub-Genre (perhaps obviously) could have things that are too specific to be counted as a genre on their own, like fixed screen and forced-scrolling shooters.

Call me a genius if you want, but that would work for the whole site, killing potentially hundreds of birds with a single stone. After that you can sit back, and enjoy "faux-turkey" for weeks on end.

I've always liked Rails for scrolling shooters, but why not just Scrolling Shooter, since that is what we are using to describe it.

We still need a vertical shooter sub-genre as well.
