My Playstation (one) games

Oh look, it's a list of jRPGs, with one or two non RPGs thrown in for good measure.

This list once contained a lot of other genres, such as 2D fighting games, more racing games, a couple of Tony Hawks, and some other oddities. Most of those games have been obsoleted - to be fair, many of the games still here are also available via PSN (at least 17 of the 24). A couple of them I've bought on PSN, despite already having the original disc. Some, I've never played, and some I may never play again. However, I don't intend on getting rid of this core any time soon. Except maybe Suikoden and Suikoden 2, if the US PSN ever gets Suikoden 2. Which it won't. :(

Edit: OMG IT DID!

List items

  • NTSC-U

My favourite of the series. Music is great, I love the dialogue, the storyline is pretty interesting, and the EX turn system does well to liven up what could have been a pretty stale battle system.

  • NTSC-U

A worthy sequel (in design and gameplay, not story) to BoF3. Having only played it the once, it's not so firmly etched into my mind.

  • NTSC-U

The first "Metroidvania" game. A brilliant game at the time, but it shows its age when compared to the recent DS titles. Still, the DS titles wouldn't have happened without this one.

  • NTSC-U

This is in my top 5 (I'm telling you, there's only five, really).

I'll be flamed or lampooned for saying so, but this game is far superior to Chrono Trigger, which I found underwhelming.

The music is flawless. The mood of this game is done so well. CC's battle system is tweaked just enough to make it interesting, though the small number of double and triple techs is a shame. The storyline is great. It's just a shame that this game landed on the PS1 instead of the PS2 where it deserved to be.

  • NTSC-U

This is Final Fantasy 5 ported and translated, and Final Fantasy 6 ported and translated. FF5 is fantastic, but when I play it I play the GBA version as it's portable and has a few extras. The music in the GBA version is of a lower quality, however.

Final Fantasy 6, I don't like as much. After playing FF5, FF6 was a step backwards in terms of gameplay, though the storyline is much better.

  • NTSC-U

This is Final Fantasy 4 ported and translated, and Chrono Trigger ported and translated (though little changed between the JP and US versions of CT).

Final Fantasy 4's storyline is quite interesting, but much like FF6, the battle system didn't grab me. After FF5's great system, this didn't keep me interested.

Chrono Trigger is considered by many to be an amazing game, but I don't think it's as wonderful as everyone says. I enjoy it, sure. But I find the combat simplistic and repetitive.

  • NTSC-U

One day I was at a shop and there was a game on demo play called Final Fantasy 7. I picked up the controller, looked at the main party menu, and immediately fell in love with jRPGs. So this game is always going to be a fond memory.

  • NTSC-U

I didn't enjoy this game as much as other FFs. I didn't really like the draw system, and I was gutted to see how the blue magic system was basically ruined.

The card game was fun, though.

  • NTSC-U

My favourite storyline of the numbered FFs. The game itself I didn't enjoy as much. The characters I quite liked, though.

  • NTSC-U

The port+extras of this game is in my top 5. This game is brilliant. Storyline is great, battle system is superb, music is excellent.

  • NTSC-J and PAL

This game is what made me fall in love with "real" driving games. The music was great, too.

  • PAL

A huge update to the franchise, with lots of new manufacturers and tracks. Music not quite as memorable. It had the GT40, though.

  • NTSC-U

I've not played much of this, but somehow it's not on my backlog... odd.

I really struggled to get into this game. I bought it on the back of its developer's name (the team that made FFT made this) but I don't know if I can bring myself to play it again.

  • NTSC-U

This is a weird little number. Interesting battle mechanic, odd storyline, and it crashed on me a few times, too. Including during the end credits.

  • NTSC-U

A very pretty game, but I have to say I found it a bit dull.

  • NTSC-U

A reboot of the Metal Gear series that revived/created the stealth genre.

Not sure how well it's aged, though.

  • NTSC-U

It's on the backlog. I don't think I'll ever have the fortitude to stick with this game, though.

  • PAL

    See backlog.

  • PAL

The setting may be cliched, and the battle system fairly standard, but the art, music and story-telling are all wonderful.

  • PAL

Much like Suikoden, the setting and battle system are nothing radical. However, also much like Suikoden, the art, music and story telling are wonderful.

  • NTSC-U

Took me a little time to get into it, but once I did, it was a great experience. Recommended.

  • PAL

It's in my top 5. It's the start of my favourite series of all time. The storyline may be somewhat cliched, but the setting is that little bit different, and the characters are very memorable. The music is some of the best in any game I've played, and I love the 2D gameplay. Finally, it spawned Alter Code F, which is an amazing game in its own right.

  • NTSC-U

Second in the series. This game has a much darker atmosphere than the first, and the characters aren't as memorable. However, I haven't played it as much as I have WA(1). The change to a 3D overworld made the game less pretty, but the music is stll great. There were a couple of changes to the gun system I wasn't so keen on.

  • NTSC-U

The music for this game was great. The battle system was interesting. The storyline I liked too... but this is a flawed game.
