People ignoring the quality of a sequel because it's too dissimilar to the original has always bugged me. A game is as good as the game it is, not what it isn't.
I appreciate the more laid back, relaxed take on game of the year discussions. What's less awesome is the reminder that there's no Austin or Patrick on board. Giant Bomb does not have the widest range of interests in video games. Some pretty massive gaps in the medium, from handhelds and japanese design tendencies, to PC and harder edged strategy and competitive games.
I feel I've reached my widest point between my interests and those of the GB crew.
There are many issues with AAA games that bug the hell out of people that more or less wouldn't exist if the ballooning cost was matched by increased price tags. You get what you pay for and generally people refuse to pay more than $60 on a game that maybe shouldn't be that cheap. Either people pay more or developers scale back, but expecting what we're getting at the price that it's at couldn't possibly lead to what so many people demand. Corners have to be cut. Reminds me of Facebook selling user information. If people refuse to pay what is required to sustain a service then either that service goes away or the creators get...creative.
That said, day 1 patches would be logical no matter the income. The intense anger over them reveals a lack of understanding of the logistics involved in managing so many people to tackle such a monumental task.
@billyok: You used to be able to shun hateful people into silence in many cases, giving them the cold shoulder and going back to your business. These days it's like Canada trying to tell Russia to knock it off. Loud and annoying is better than silent and accepting.
@sethmode: To be fair it's usually a matter of "they didn't like a game I liked" or vice versa. This is more of a political statement. Wait, political is a dirty word, maybe moral? Either way, regardless of how petty it is it's still something else from the usual "how dare you not share similar interests in entertainment!".
Originally, I would have said No Man's Sky for hottest mess in a heartbeat, but Alex's argument totally convinced me. At some point someone on the deliberations cast said something like "You can't have a hotter mess than white supremacy" and I couldn't agree more. I understand why some people are of the opinion that politics should stay out of games (I respectfully disagree), but Luckey's actions dragged the entire industry downward and I'm very happy that Giant Bomb chose to very publicly disavow anything and everything related to white supremacy and internet hate groups. I really enjoyed today's lists and the deliberations podcast and I'm looking forward to the rest of the week.
Absolutely. I sometimes wish the site would acknowledge stuff like this more but usually get why they don't. This time, however, really needed it's "moment".
