@NaCl: Tried that a couple of times. I've now got like 7 .cpgz files.

I had an inkling I'd have problems with this as soon as I saw the Sony Music logo.

You can consider trying a 3rd party decompresser like Keka. Who knows it might work.

Are JRPGs in such a poor state that Giant Bomb needs to make an Affirmative Action hire? When good japanese games come out they tend to get covered, regardless of genre.

Don't see anything wrong with covering niche stuff.

The problem; Niche games are best covered by sites which specialize in that niche. I doubt that a lot of GB visitors are interested in mediocre or bad JRPGs, so expanding coverage beyond the "good" ones doesn't seem worthwhile. Assuming that the site has finite resources, they should use those resources to cover interesting releases regardless of genre rather than dedicating an entire human being to one (rather uninteresting) niche.

Are the GB guys really in such dire economical straits that they can't hire one more guy?

And he doesn't necessary have to review ONLY JRPGs. It's just that he will be the go-to-guy for JRPGs since he is well verse in the genre. Since his taste differs from the rest of the GB cast, he might also be able to provide a different perspective for the non-JRPG games he previews or reviews.

PS: Also those specialized niche site can make money from covering niche stuff why can't GB?

PPS: It might also help broaden the interests of GB readership. As I said, gaming need more variety. I rather GB help broaden the horizons of gaming by helping bring to attention niche stuff than be nothing but an echo chamber for the popular stuff.

PS: Gaming IMHO could use a bit more variety. Everything is a fucking shooter or a shooter-with-icing (e.g. Mass Effect, The Darkening II, Elder Scrolls). I swear FPSs (and their close cousin 3rdPSs) are the platformers of this era of gaming. No interesting gameplay idea for your game? Just make it shooter.

@pyrodactyl: They really, really, don't need a "JRPG guy". Just like they don't need a "sports guy". They'll keep doing what they've been doing, which is why the site is so popular.

If you want to listen to people talk about JRPG's specifically, that go beyond the interests and knowledge of the Giant Bomb crew, there are a number of sites out there where you can find it.

I don't really understand this view.

What's wrong with adding people, with interests (like JRPG or sports) which are different from theirs, so they are a little more well rounded with their coverage? It's not like they are going to stop covering what they are covering now.

IMHO, for most part, there just isn't much for GB to review when it comes to JRPGs.

JRPGs kind of went from mainstream to niche in the past decade or so. No idea what happened there.

I'm pretty sure good JRPGs are still being made, just not by an old guard like Square Enix, but most of them seem to stay within Japan.

With the current generation of gamers completely obsessed with military shooters, and it's getting kind of stupid to be honest, Japanese developers probably feel it's a waste of money trying to bring them across the pacific. Not to mention, any game that doesn't have Crysis-like graphics - which they simply don't have the zillion dollar CoD type of budget to do - is justing going to get panned by audiences here.

To those whining about DirectX. You don't need it. OpenGL works just fine.

Drivers are still a problem though. The quality of the driver basically depends on how much effort the video card makers put into optimizing them. That and Apple not like hardware vendors "going around them" - Apple to my knowledge handles the distribution of all hardware drivers for their systems. The good thing about Apple handling driver distribution is stability as Apple gets to vet all drivers and make sure it works well with the rest of the system before they hit the users (that said, Apple's QA has on occasion "drop the ball" but it's fine most of the time), the downside of course is you won't get any cutting edge drivers direct from the video card manufacturers.

I'm a bit surprised WoW still has 10.2 million subscribers. Last October it had 10.3, so apparently The Old Republic barely made a dent in it. Maybe a lot of their userbase is in kind of a "trial mode" with TOR, having both subscriptions active? I can't imagine the majority are new MMO players or players from other MMOs.

Either way I don't have a dog in this race (I'm done with MMOs as they are right now), but I find it interesting, as someone who started playing them way back at the beginning of Everquest (which is still going!)

Also, Skylanders is a genius idea. Activison may do some terrible things but they sure know how to make money.

IMO if WoW is losing numbers, it's because it's player base is burning out on MMOs in general - current style of MMO anyway - rather than due to some competing product. It takes quite a bit of investment to get into another MMO (another $60+) and the game ... well probably isn't going to stray all that far from WoW anyway, not to mention probably won't be as polished as WoW that has been running for 6 years.

While WoW isn't anything really special nowadays, but it was damn great when it came out. It's art style and it's well-tuned and easily to pick up gameplay got itself a ton of players. IMHO if MMO developers/publishers want to actually take the crown from the aging WoW, they are going to make a game that provides as much of a "leap" as WoW did 6 years ago. If you are too chicken to make anything but a "me-too", you will just be left in WoW's shadow. But with MMOs costing $200-$300 million to make, I suppose we can't really blame the developers/publishers too much.

Second of all, many atheists feel like religion has too much to say in the way in which the world is run. They often feel oppressed so they decide to be outspoken and criticize religion openly. You may not see the point in their critique but, frankly, you don't have; we have free speech and criticizing things you do not like or agree with is a manifestation of that privilege.

I think this is the beef most atheist have with religion.

I'm not American, but your politics scare hell out of me. Every politician has to kow-tow to the religious right (and their demands) in order to even have a chance of getting elected - so much for "freedom of religion". What the heck happened to electing the most qualified and capable candidate for the job?
