Photoblog: Dead Rising 2: High Stakes Edition.

Today I received my copy of Dead Rising 2: High Stakes Edition. It cost $90 (after 2 day shipping that levies out to about $110). And like any limited editon. It is full of weird stuff. Is it necessarily worth the extra money? To each their own, I rationalize it as buying a Dead Rising poker set for $40. Not a bad deal at all. Rationalization aside. Lets see what we have here. A rational place to start is the box. Nothing too fancy with the box. It's a yellow box.

Here is the visitor guide/map. The advertisements on it are neat, if nothing else. But the map is the real hook

The actual map looks like it is actually going to be useful. Well, as useful as the maps you find in any mall.  I highly doubt I will actually USE this thing. I'm a guy after all, we don't ask for directions.

The DLC ticket. Sadly I didn't get the golden ticket or the 6 foot tall Zombie statue. Probably for the best though, I would've made so many people mad....

Ah yes, this is why I bought this edition. The poker kit comes in this neat case. Shiny!

The backs are simple with the Fortune City logo, and the face cards are characters from the game.  Well, the same three characters for each suit. Check out the paddlesaw.

Oh right. Among all this stuff is a copy of the actual game. Fun note: This is the first disc-based 360 game I bought. It all has to start somewhere right? That's all for today , thanks for tuning in!

Thoughts so far on Dissidia Duodecim

No Caption Provided

So TGS has come and gone, and outside of the Devil May Cry reboot. The thing that has intrigued me the most is the stuff on Dissidia Duodecim (sounds like Duodenum, hahaha, old joke)

The Father/Son picnic never ends well for these two.
The Father/Son picnic never ends well for these two.
There is a trailer on the official website here. And this may be my Final Fantasy inside fanboy (despite not finishing a FF since X), but HOLY CRAP THAT LOOKS AWESOME!  Dissidia for the PSP is probably my favorite game. It has a decent battle system, insane amounts of customization, and a Giga-Graviton of fan service. It was a perfect pick up and go game, and despite me not having much knowledge about the series in general (before Dissidia I had only finished 7-10, and played a bit of 4 and 5.) I was able to dig the story.  Actually, Dissidia was the first game where I imported it and used online translation guides to play the game. I just couldn't turn down seeing Jecht fight Sephiroth.

So, what's new?

There are two new characters confirmed (Well, maybe three, Tifa is practically confirmed)

 The Dragoon Jumps into action

Kain

The dragoon from FFIV makes his appearance here. Nomura basically fought to have him in the last one, but he didn't make it. He arrives in 012 to make things complicated between Cecil and Golbez. Complicated. He seems to have a lot of jumping attacks, being a dragoon and all.

 Rose petals will fall.
 Rose petals will fall.

Lightning

One of the main characters from FF13. She seems to have the Paradigm system from 13, in gameplay you can see ATK under her lifebar, so this should make her an interesting character. A lot of her attacks tie in with her Odin summon.

In an interview done by andriasang with the producer Tetsuya Nomura and director Mitsunori Takahashi, they said that there won't necessarily be one good character and one evil character added per game, they were just going by popularity, and uniqueness of moves. So, who knows who might get in. Take Final Fantasy 10 for example. Auron seems like a shoe in right? Or would Yuna's summoner style give her the edge. Maybe Wakka?

There is also a neat assist system that works like Marvel vs Capcom. Where another character will come in and hit your opponent. Looks like it will add another layer of depth, but I can't help but worry that people will just pick Cloud due to popularity, and his goddamn Omnislash Ver. 5 combo.

There will be a new story, new moves, new stages, new music. Obviously. There was just so much stuff in the first game, from weapons to summons to armor and accesories. Just a massive amount of stuff to collect. Personally, I cannot wait for this game, I will probably pre-order this and import it when it hits in spring. I am completely hyped over this.

Oh right, there might be something for you if you are a Kingdom Hearts fan or a Parasite Eve fan.

That's right! Puzzle Quest 2 for one lucky wall writer.

Long story short. Write on my wall by 7pm EST. 4PM Pacific, and get entered in a drawing to win my signed copy of Puzzle Quest 2 for the DS.
(If you don't want it signed, that's cool too)

Due to Customs and stuff, have to restrict this to US only, sorry!

Go crazy. Bonus points if you comment on Professor Quagsire (points do not mean anything)

RecSpec's Gotta Catch 'Em All Update for July 25 to August 1.

I guess I'll just do this on Monday, since I seem to be getting free time here.

So last week I ended at 202 Obtained, where am I right now? I am at a robust 263, passing the halfway point.
Feeling good right now, it all feels fresh to me, not having done this since the GBC Silver, and it's a good way to take my mind off things.

So...how hard is it to "Catch 'em all"?

As of this writing, I am about 3 days into this thing I'm doing. A little bit of a gaming challenge, something to test my skills.
Ah who the hell am I kidding, I'm trying to catch all 493 pokemon.

I mean, it's not that hard right? You just gotta make a few trades, level up a bit, search and search. Easy right?

I loved Blue, loved Silver, thought Ruby was okay, and was turned off by Diamond after the firsty gym.
This long summer vacation I am on got me hooked back onto this series.
I recieved SoulSilver from a friend for my birthday after me and her ended up talking nostalgic about these weird creatures.

To be honest, I never thought I would play through it. I mean, I started, beat the first gym. Then kinda got bored with it.
Had a ton of fun with the Pokewalker, that little pedometer that lets you carry a Pokemon around. But I never really thought that
I'd get through the game. Then I go on this 2 month vacation, play the hell out of Peace Walker. And...start SoulSilver back up again.

It was weird, the same feeling I got from Blue and Silver came back to me, the thrill of winning with a team of YOUR choice.
Seeing the Pokemon you raise take out a foe that is way stronger than them. It's just...it's not like anything out there really.

So...beating the game is one thing (not there yet, still have to grind about 10 more levels to fight Red), catching all of them is a different beast in of itself.
(Here's a fun fact. Early versions of Ruby and Sapphire have the tagline "Gotta catch em all" on there, but after that, no Pokemon game has had it on there since)
What made me want to catch them? Not sure, maybe it's some instinct from my childhood, maybe its due to the fact that I never finished the job in Silver for the GBC.
I stopped playing at 247, I was 4 away from completing the Pokedex, but I stopped, can't remember why.

So hey, I'm here, trying to have record of possession of all 493. I mean, it would be nice to actually HAVE all 493, but that is kinda impossible.
There are too many legendaries out there, it was ridiculous. Having all of them would require some pretty uneven trades. So I'm gonna settle with
the old trade/trade back method, for proof of ownership.

The research was tough. The Ruby/Sapphire Pokemon were a blur in my head, and the Diamond/Pearl ones are COMPLETELY foreign.
Looking at some things, I was just amazed by how crazy  things got. I knew Electabuzz could have a kid form, but it also evolved!?
Magneton turns to a UFO? There are even MORE Eevee forms!?

Mind boggling stuff, enough to turn someone off of this stuff. I will venture on though, trying to catch them all.
Waiting at the mercy of the Global Trade Station (you offer a pokemon, and say what you want, and you wait for the community to take it)
Leveling up random folks, making them happy, giving them stones, trading them away.

I'll be updating my status every Sunday, but this is the first week, so the first update will be on Monday aka tomorrow.
Every day I'll be tweeting my numbers (Started at 93 obtained, now I am at 124).
If you wanna follow along, I'm recspecreno on Twitter. So...here goes nothing. Wish me luck!

Father's Day Tribute

Today is Father's Day. If you didn't know that...SURPRISE!! That day of the year where you send dear old dad a card or a tie.
Me, I'm kinda lucky, I can buy my dad a video game.

See, my first encounter with video games (Not counting a Street Fighter 2 machine my mother always wheeled me by at the grocery store) was when my dad bought a Sega Genesis with Altered Beast. That game scared the bejeezus out of me. But it was the first game I ever played. That was the first spark that sent me down this spiraling path of video game stuff I'm on.

As a kid, I didn't have any money, so I would have to rely on my mom or dad to buy my games. And seeing as my dad usually did all the birthday shopping while my mom was buying stuff for the house. I had to run all gift checks through him. He wouldn't let me buy any of the whimsical "fun" games out there. With your anime-like main characters and your cartoon mascots. "Buy something that's not for babies." Oh those days of torture.

But either through sheer luck or just some kind of fatherly intuition. He has had some pretty good choices for games.
When I first got my PS1 he got me Tenchu: Stealth Assassins. That game is pretty damn good, and it was a worthy counterpart to MGS.
He also bought Resident Evil 2 and Oddworld Abe's Exoddus. All these games still rank pretty high up there on my list of games I liked.
When he actually let me pick games out for myself? I picked gems such as Gex 3, Twisted Metal 3, and the brilliant Tomorrow Never Dies.
My first PS2 game was Tekken Tag Tournament, another great game, and my entry into 3d fighters.

Shopping for my dad is pretty easy, he likes games, but he doesn't buy a lot of them. I mean heck, this week he was replaying the Medal of Honor games for PS2.
This Father's Day I bought him NCAA Football 2009, yes 2009. I mean heck, he's been playing NCAA 2003 for the last few years. That's right, and 8 year old game.
I mean, it's not much, but hey, it means a lot to him, and without him, I wouldn't be gaming today. I'd probably be some kind of businessman or something. Pshaw.

So, here's to all the Dads that support our gaming hobby, and even play games sometimes.
And yes, I am pretty sure that some of you reading this are video gaming fathers. So here's to you!
Happy Father's Day!

Quick update: Thoughts on Sony's Conference.

1. Way too much time spent on the Move imo. Not to mention the prices. 70 bucks for both pieces. Not as bad as I thought, but meh.

2. Kevin Butler taking the stage was great! Then they killed all that momentum with Marcus.

3. Twisted Metal, wow. I'm totally digging the new direction of the series.

4. PS Plus. I like it. I mean, I already buy Qore. 50 bucks a year (like with XBL) is no big deal. I mean, gaming isn't a cheap hobby.
I just hope they actually deliver on it.

5. Portal 2 announcement. WOW. Gabe Newell's appearance is close to one of the LAST things I would have expected.
So do we finally get some love for Valve on the PS3 front?

Overall, I expected Sony's conference to pale in comparison to Nintendo's...and it did.
But they managed to finish strong, despite a HORRID first half. "And now...more stuff on the PS Move..."

Random Peace Walker things you may have missed. *spoilers abound*

WARNING: This blog post may contain spoilers about various elements in Peace Walker, if you don't wanna be spoiled, turn back now.

So, this game hasn't been out a week yet. So there is no way I have seen everything, but here are some things that you may have missed your first time through.

1. Chapter 5: Beating Peace Walker isn't the end. So don't stop at the end of Ch. 4. I won't go any deeper, but yeah.

2. Audio files in the AI Pods. After you defeat the bosses (Pupa, Chrysalis, Cocoon) you get to go inside and pull the AI boards. Pay attention though! Sometimes you might get an UP prompt as you are moving around the pod, press the button and get a new audio file. This works in all of the battles, even the later Ex. Ops. You might have to replay missions though.

3. Which truck was it again? For those of you that remembered the license plate number, congrats. Congrats on missing some funny easter eggs. Go back and pick the other trucks.  Not only will you get some funny bits, you will also get someone for Mother Base. Someone very important.

4. Funny conversations- I love the briefing file system, now I can listen to all those codec conversations whenever I want, and its not even during a mission. While nothing tops Sigint's nightmare from MGS3 (Not yet...) there have been some funny conversations. At least listen to Miller explain the Box Tank. Also, the explanation of Cecile's name is good too. (Thanks again to Miller)

5. Weird Weapons? Oh yeah. Again, not going to spoil too much, but I personally love the weapon you recieve after Ex. Op 45. Hold Up.

6. Gotta Catch 'em All. While many people destroyed the vehicles, there is a much more rewarding way to go about these boss battles. Take out all the enemies (The escorts and all of the back ups). And the commander will pop out of the Tank, Helicopter, etc. Take him out, and you KEEP the vehicle. The commander will only show up when the vehicle is under 60% (unless it's a tank, then it is 40%). These make Outer Ops, way easier. And you don't risk losing your people.

7. It's all about your skills! While the main characters that work on Mother Base have their own skills (Huey with Bipedal Design). Some of the regular Joes have them too. Some of them are invaluable. Channeler for instance, let's you see all items and prisoners on the map.

8. Finish Zeke!! During the boss battles, you get more parts for Zeke if you just aim for the AI Pod, don't worry about the other parts. Pupa has the Jetpack, Chrysalis has the Radome and Railgun, and Cocoon has the Armor. You need one of each main part AND the Railgun for Zeke to function (And finish Ch. 4)

9. Isla Del Monstruo: Read all of Chico's briefing files on UMAs. Then play Ex. Ops 29. Head back to the beach, and go to the dock, there you will see a familiar face if you've played Monster Hunter....

10. Dead Man's Treasure. One of the more bizarre mission sets. With one hell of a cameo too. Think MGS3....
