Franchises That Deserve A Reboot / Refresh

If someone can tell me why we can't have a decent Looney Tunes, Pixar or Jeopardy game I'd love to hear it. Enjoy this mix of forgotten and ill-treated franchises.

List items

  • The genesis and SNES shadowrun games were RPGs that were way ahead of their time. They didn't follow typical JRPG formulas and on the whole were difficult and original games. The FPS Shadowrun game released recently was mediocre at best. The steampunk world of Shadowrun is too good to not have a giant gaming franchise to back it up.

  • Not much to say. Can't think of one release worth mentioning n 2009. For all the hype around 4E we haven't seen one game using the ruleset.

  • Video Games are for kids right? You'd think there would be big releases in this franchise ever year. It's an untapped goldmine.

  • Pixar makes awesome movies that are aimed at kids but enjoyed by adults. Weird that you can't say the same about the games. I'd easily buy a Pixar themed game if they spent some money trying to not make it dogshit.

  • OK sure, this franchise shouldn't really have made it to a second game but damned if I can't love the concept. Interstate '76 was a great take on the Mechwarrior format and while I didn't like '82 I was always kind of bummed the franchise didn't continue.

  • The first Deus Ex is one of my all-time favorites. The second dropped all the interesting bits and went out as a generic shooter in the Deus Ex world. Someone can pick this one back up like Bethesda did with Fallout.

  • Everyone loves Jeopardy! In this world of connected gaming machines how come I'm not going home and playing Jeopardy every night live with Alex? Seems like a no-brainer.

  • The first game was everything you liked about pure run-and-gun shooters and the rest were what you hated about them. I don't see Painkiller making it to another game.

  • ROBOTS shooting lasers and missles and stuff. Likely the biggest franchise that still isn't around that I can think of. I'd love to see a new one that didn't require a goofy controller.

  • I played the shit out of both Pilotwing games. It's always been weird that this one didn't make it past the 64-era.

  • OK, I know that turn-based-strategy isn't the hot genre like it was 20 years ago but Jagged Alliance was the best franchise of that genre and it seems weird that we don't have games like it anymore.

  • I never played any of the old-school, early computer Prisoner games but I can't imagine they were any good. I'd love to see an Adventure game in the vein of Indigo Prophecy where you're trying to figure out what the hell just happened.

  • Sure, I loved BioShock, but give me the sci-fi world over the Ayn Rand inspired Rapture any day.

  • I'm sure we'll get a new X-Com game eventually but until then I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the horrible action games that came out near the series' close.

  • Before Close Combat was a mediocre First Person Shooter it was a pretty awesome and strategic RTS game that launched Microsoft into the gaming realm.

  • Is there a bigger Sci-Fi series more mistreated than Alien? Sure AvP2 was a pretty solid game, but outside of Alien 3 for the Genesis I can't think of anything that wasn't dissapointing.

  • Mechwarrior 2 is beyond a doubt one of my favorite games of all time. It's up there with Quake and X-Wing as one of those life-defining games. Would absolutely love for someone to reshape as FASA licensed game.

here's hoping Eidos' Deux Ex 3 will be good, because I feel the same way you do. 1 is pretty much my favorite pc game ever.

@ D&D - isn't the 4th edition kind of a reboot already?
@ Mechwarrior - aren't they making a new game right now?
Oh, you kind of forgot Tony Hawk. They kind of tried to reboot it, but failed miserably and need another reboot :/

YEAH MechWarrior!  I was just thinking about it the other day =B

I was always amazed at how shitty the Looney Tunes games were when they could potentially be awesome.

Since Looney Toons wasn't always just for kids, I wonder if they could manage to have some of that relevance instead of just pandering to what they think kids want.  We grew up with Looney Toons, and even if we didn't understand all of the references I think we wound up a tad more sophisticated for it.  (Sympathy for Wile E. Coyote, for example)

I would love to see a new Pilotwings.  That game was pretty ahead of its time with ideas that could be so much better improved today.  BTW, the Super Nintendo is my favorite system ever.  ;)

Also wanted to add that playing Mechwarrior on an old 286 will always hold a place in my heart.

Deus Ex, X-Com, Jagged Alliance...great games but such high expectations are bound to make the last of the series more disappointing.

7.62 from 1C this year looked a bit Jaggedy Alliancey, but sadly it also looked terrible.  Anybody played it?

The Mysteries of Westgate expansion for NWN2 is excellent if you haven't played it.  It's a real shame how Ossian Studios and their game were treated - they've got talent, I'd like to see what they could do with a real budget and a better publisher.

New MechWarrior is on the way.  New Deus Ex is on the way.  New Alien vs. Predator is on the way.  That knocks three off your list right there.

Painkiller: Resurrection is a stand-alone expansion for Painkiller that gives a new protagonist and updates the engine it ran on.

Other than that...2K Games has the license to X-COM now, so I'm sure that'll be a big announcement for E3.

Other than that, it's an alright list, Snide.  But Jeopardy?  Really?

Is Mechassault  a spin-off of Mechwarrior? I've always wondered but I'm too lazy to search Google for the answer.

I've always wanted to see a new good Interstate '76 game. I loved that game. I'd probably be happy if they just remade it.

I could definitely go for some Jeopardy. I think that 1 vs 100 is better suited though.

System Shock doesn't need a reboot. All I ask of a SS3 is that the weapons don't degrade at a rate of knots, and that peoples faces arn't modeled after the shape of a rough diamond.

Well, now we're getting an X-Com game.  Hooray?

How about take it into space, mercenaries, that sort of thing.  Kind of like Laser Squad, X-Com's predecessor?

Mechwarrior twice in the list, but no Wing Commander?

I loved MechWarrior, but I'd much rather see a new WC game, and wasn't that a bigger franchise than MW at it's peak, and has been away for much longer (MW4 Mercenaries ~2003, WC: Prophecy 1998)?
