It has been a long time since the last time I blogged. Alot of that is because writing does not come naturally to me. I recently just took a class on helping my students in writing and comprehension, so I have decided that maybe I ought to write every now and then. So here are some things that either I have been playing lately, or have been on my mind.
Mobile Games
Game Dev Story - The praises have already been sung on this game, so I will just briefly talk about my experiences. I am on my third play-through. The game is very addictive. The pure amount of crazy games you can make are insane. My RPG Golf game has sold millions upon millions, and that is just crazy to me. The simplicity of this game is why it is so enjoyable.
Mass Effect: Infiltrator - I bought this game and the next game I will talk about for a buck each last week. This game is alright, nothing special. I was kind of hoping it would give me some insight as to why the Mass Effect universe is so appealing, but it has not. Saying that, I am only through about an hour and a half of the game, so I will continue playing it. But not too impressed by the game at this time.
Order and Chaos Online - This is a WOW clone. And it is a really good WOW clone. The interface is changed a bit to make it better for phones. Map in the top right corner, 3 chosen skills in the lower right corner. HP and Exp in the top left corner. The reason why I like this game more than WOW is because it is portable, and lower price entry and subscription. The quality of the game overall is pretty good. I am up to lv. 7 (I think). I have experienced some lag, but this I would probably attribute to my phone more than anything else. Of all the games to this point, I have enjoyed this game the most.
All these games are pretty good, and allow me to play something while on the go. So this really makes me think about my Nintendo 3DS. I enjoy the system, but I feel that the quality of mobile games are approaching that of handheld games. Sure they are nothing like the top tier handheld (Mario, Zelda, etc.), but I enjoy playing Order and Chaos as much if not more than Tom Clancy Shadow Wars. And I feel they are both good games. This makes me wonder if I should trade in my 3DS and games. Then I could just use that money to buy other games and/or tablets. Probably not worth it in the end, as I really like playing Nintendo games, but it is something that has crossed my mind.
While we are here, what about trading in games period? I could trade in 3 games for my 3DS right now, and get some Xbox points and a game. I feel like that is almost a trade up in some instances. I have finished Super Mario 3D Land, and done everything inside of it. I have beaten The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, for a second time. These are awesome games, but I do not see my playing them again, so why not trade them in. But I know that as soon as I trade in the games, that I will want to play them again. Is this just something I feel, or do other fight the same situations as well?
Console games
Alpha Protocol - I am surprised how much I enjoyed this game. I guess I would considering I only paid 7 bucks for it. The conversation system in that game kept me playing, even though at the beginning I thought about stopping. The story does pick up, and there are some twists in the game that are pretty good (even though they are foreseeable). The gameplay is not great. The shooting is pretty rough, and pretty broken once you realize that I can just hide behind cover, and wait for my pistol to do all the damage. Sound is pretty bland as well. The best thing about this game is the way relationships work. The relationships rely on what decisions you make in the conversation system. I was hooked for the whole time on this part of the game.
Developing Games and Websites
That is mainly it for games. I have been brushing up on HTML, CSS, and C++ lately. After seeing all of the blogs about making a game, now I have aspirations to do the same myself. Will it happen? I don't know. I have another month of alot of free time, so I can do lot of reviewing, and hopefully learning. I made it through quite a bit of C++ back in the day (college, about 3 years ago). I understood arrays ok then, and from what I remember, that was the thing in C++ that separated everyone. So if anyone is reading this, and has any tips or suggestions, feel free to drop them. I want to first go through HTML, then C++, then possibly Python. But I have no idea if I am getting in over my head.
That's about it for what has been on my mind lately. Sorry for the poor writing skills, but thanks to anyone who made it through all of this. Any tips, hints, or suggestions are welcome. Take it easy guys!
