@galmactual: I honestly do not remember if it was AC4 or AC5 that I started with.

In terms of that arcadey-destroy everything on the map feel, I made it a habit to destroy everything possible on every AC5/AC0 mission simply because it was possible lol.

It was AC4 where there was so much going on and optional objectives that I couldn't do everything. AC6 was similar.

@galmactual: LOL that is a great summary of AC4.

I like a lot about AC4, particularly the sleek atmosphere that it had compared to AC5/AC0. The intro screen alone with seagulls and that Blue Skies song just sucks you in right off the bat.

But geopolitics is my thing, and AC5 is easily the best plot and gameplay combination I have ever experienced in any video game ever. I can't even get through watching all of the FMVs on youtube without tearing up because of how bloody awesome and epic the story really is. The intrigue beats any Tom Clancy story, gameplay feels more solid than Metal Gear Solid. I don't know why, but I find stories where ships from opposing forces joining together to form a third force to be the greatest of plot devices, and that mission where you have to fight both the Yuktobanian fleet AND the Osean fleet simultaneously was easily one of the best moments in gameplay history IMO; it just says so much about the surrealism and absurdity of real world politics and conflict as well.

I never understood why they never released HD version of AC4, AC5, and AC0 back when they were releasing HD remasters of other big series like MGS or Silent Hill. I would have bought that shit the moment I saw it. Instead they produced that UTTER GARBAGE known as Assault Horizon. I tried replaying it again like a year ago, and I just didn't have it in me to get past the first helicopter mission. It was just that fucking bad.

Another thing that has always appealed to me about Ace Combat is that this is a series that I can only play on Ace difficulty. I can't stand anything easier. Knowing that I can be downed in like one or two hits makes me fly better. There's that mission in AC5 where you are low on ammo and run into the 8492nd; you're supposed to just fly low and avoid them until you fly off the map, except I used to just shitkick them instead.

Oh and did I mention that these games had like the best video game soundtracks ever? I used to have an ipod with all of the soundtracks in my truck. I remember my ex used to bitch about how I would drive too fast when it was foggy on the highway, so I would tell her to shut up and put on the Ace Combat.

Yeah, though I'd imagine it's so hard to sift through all the garbage in that genre that it puts some people off of it entirely.

Dan and some of the crew do enjoy the RE type of survival horror games, the ones with some action/RPG elements, and more than wandering around and running away and getting jumpscares. We lost most of that coverage when Scoops left, it seems.

Though I do enjoy a good survival horror game, the genre is flooded with complete crap and it may well destroy the genre's reputation, soon enough... when devs get tired of their otherwise-good game getting thrown in with all the other crap in that category, and therefore, it's largely ignored. Then, eventually as usual, it will come back again in a decade and the cycle will continue... that, at least, is my prediction of the situation, based on history of other less-than-mainstream genres.

It's not that survival horror games these days are crap; the issue is that they have declined in production. Some of the top series have simply disappeared (Silent Hill) while others have changed genres entirely (Resident Evil).

I grew up with the first generation of SH and RE, and that's what I consider to be the benchmark for survival horror gaming in terms of gameplay atmosphere and plot delivery. In my opinion, the decline of survival horror games began with the development of RE4. I recall all of the enigmatic iterations of this game that were teased long before the final product, along with the developers' claims on how it would be the most horrific game ever made. It ended up being a great game and all, but the action aspect really dominated the theme while the horror aspects were cheesy.

As we now know, one of the early versions of RE4 became Devil May Cry, which greatly defined the action horror genre at the time. Nowadays, we see a lot of big games out there that are along the same lines of DMC gameplay. These themes of classic horror elements (like the perception of Hell dating way back to Dante's Inferno) being overused and completely nerfed in these action settings have really changed how people perceive horror in video games... which really isn't all that different from how the horror genre has progressed through films since they peaked in the 1980s.

Outlast is like the "Paranormal Activity" of the survival horror genre in video games in how it is a fairly simple design, but effective; and as such, a lot of people can't stand it while many people love it. The people who don't like Outlast are those who complain about how you can't fight back, and this is because they are used to action horror games where you mow down everything in your path with machineguns to progress. But Outlast is certainly the best survival horror series out there at this time, IMO. Unlike Dead By Daylight, which I regret wasting my money on. What a godawful pile of crap that is: a boring experience where the best part is the trailers for it you can watch for free on Steam.

I think the genre of horror has an ambiguous definition left up to subjective opinion. That being said, in my opinion horror seems to always include common themes. Specifically, horror tries to immerse the audience into a world of wanton brutality where the protagonists must adapt and overcome to survive. I almost want to say that a sci-fi theme is required for horror to work in this way, since the plot concept needs to be so abnormal that it is shocking, but I think there are too many exceptional examples. For instance, franchises like SAW, Hostel and The Purge all have strong horror elements, despite it being well within the realm of reality.

As for Outlast 2, I already broke down and am downloading it now. Growing up on survival horror games, I really enjoyed the first Outlast. However, playing Outlast so many years after it was released, I used guides extensively. So I may as well go through Outlast 2 before I have the chance to run to the guides.

BTW, my most favourite element of any horror game is boss design, and in that aspect Outlast kicked some serious ass. There are some non-mainstream horror games I really liked in the past but I won't go back to them because they are lacking in the boss department, such as Cold Fear (they just couldn't make it perfect, could they).

I got the game after I saw the QL.

Solo play is tough but squad play is somewhat better, depends on if everyone sticks together or not. It's all random matchmaking and most of the time, by the simple design of the game, it usually works out great. Haven't had much luck on duo mode, but I usually end up in two-man teams near the end of 4-man squad matches.

Just imagine that this game plays alot like STALKER, but the theme is Battle Royale (the Japanese movie/book). The only serious issue I have with it so far is graphics optimization problems, since the buildings usually spend several minutes loading to the point that I can even enter them to begin with. But this probably isn't a problem for stronger PCs, and a patch is due in a week.

I'm usually only on GB to watch videos, but lately I've been hearing about Drew being memefied. Then I started seeing the meme all over Facebook.

Just now, I saw it posted on a Sputnik (Russian international news agency) article on Facebook! The article is about allowing sex and cigarette breaks on the job in Sweden.

The Drew gif is on the FB post by Sputnik, and I'm not sure how to post a screenshot of that here. Link to the actual article here: https://sputniknews.com/art_living/201702221050931065-sweden-sex-breaks/.

Hey guys, so I am a premium member and I've been watching videos from here for years... but now there is a really annoying bug I am encountering. Essentially, the video is loading just fine and I'll be watching a video in fullscreen only to have the loading circle flash for a split second, every ten seconds or so, despite the video streaming seamlessly. This seems to happen on every video that I watch on my PC (windows 7/Chrome) and I must say that it really is very distracting.

I don't know if this is a common problem, but I do know that I never had any problems with the old video player. Not sure if there is a different setting I am supposed to stick to? Apologies in advance if a solution for this has already been posted, but I don't really feel like digging for it.

@ajayraz: Yup, that was exactly the issue. I must be getting old, because I'm used to the era where you knew your expansion packs worked because they were on separate discs.
