Top 20 PS4 Games

For this list, each game is a title I played primarily as a PS4 game. In other words, I won't include GTA 5 as I played it first and grew to enjoy it on PS3. Same with Diablo 3, The Last of Us (both also PS3) and Overwatch (on PC).

List items

  • At the time of writing, Destiny 2 is now out but I have yet to play it. We shall see how it effects this list when I revisit it next year.

The one game I have played the most on my PS4, I have not played anything else for as long and as hard in many years, not even Halo which is the reason I had my eye on it in the first place. Was interesting to see how the Xboxs top developer would tackle PlayStation hardware. Which is why Destiny is such an interesting PS3 game too. But it was the PS4 version I played til my eyes were sore.

  • I don't have Bloodborne on this list, I respect that game but it's not something I have gotten into at the time of writing this, but other than that game, Horizon is the one IP, newly introduced on PS4 (as an exclusive)that you can honestly say has instantly entered the annals of Hall of Fame status. And you can sort of disclude Bloodborne because it is basically a "Souls" game.

Although, saying that, there are a lot of open world games on my list. In fact there is a very similar game a little bit below this. Though upon playing Horizon for the first time, though I was expecting something a bit Witchery, it is actually more like Far Cry. But better of course.

The reason this game stuck out to me after I played it for the first time are 1. the visuals, this is a gorgeous game and 2. the mechanical enemies are outstanding. It's also one of those sorts of open world stealth games (see also MGS 5) that makes you feel extremely dangerous if you can remain out of sight. That's the RPG side of the game in motion, you're supposed to become better and better the more you play it.

Can't wait to see where this franchise goes in the future.

  • A big surprise this one as I wouldn't even consider myself to be all that big a MGS fan. They are usually great cinematic experiences with blockbuster set pieces, but I never feel like I'm actually playing them all that much. MGS 5 was so different though, there was very little of that screen where you have the 2 portraits of characters talking to each other, there is a lot of in-game action in this one.

I've been starting to really enjoy open world stealth games, as they feel real satisfying when you play them properly. MGS 5 makes you feel like a one man army that no one can even see and it is so different to the rest of the series. A series that I do respect and have enjoyed in the past, but not on this scale.

  • After taking it home, this took me a while to get round to really getting into, and it's one of these games that for me, it was the quest I enjoyed. Combat is fine, visuals are stunning, but just wandering around that world doing all these random activities for people while still having my sights set on my final goal is what really made it for me.

Not that the stunning visuals weren't that important. The city of Novigrad took my breath away when i rolled into it. And Skellege just made my jaw drop when I stood atop its cliffs.

I wasn't really expecting to enjoy this as I had heard Witcher 2 was a tough game, but I'm glad I stuck with part 3.

  • March of 2017 was a big month for me, you will see a couple of other games from this period in my list, but Nier wasn't a game I had longed for ever since it's announcement, nor did I play the first game in 2010. I do enjoy the combat of Platinum Game's action titles and pairing that system up with the RPG genre is genius. It also helps that the story is bananas as well, taking you in all sorts of directions over 5 playthroughs.

  • Loved the first game on Vita and always hoped for a follow up. Though I am not madly keen on the way you fight enemies (the camera is a sort of enemy itself), it is a world I can spend no limit of time in. Excellent music too. The game is rather long, and it's ending is quite drawn out, but it does work hard to wrap up loose ends and questions asked by the first game so it is ideal for fans, like me.

  • Along with Titanfall 2 and Watch Dogs 2, late 2016 had a couple of surprises for me. This is one of those games which has a fascinating world that is impeccably realised and convinces you that people could actually live in it. It is also one of those stealth games that make you feel like a powerful bad ass when you plan everything out.

  • Took me a while to get round to playing this. I am not overly keen on the "Telltale" style of games and this is pretty Telltaley for a non-Telltale game. But the style of visuals plus the musical soundtrack exude a satisfying sense of nostalgia, even though these girls are growing up in a different age to me. Played all episodes back to back so it also felt like binge watching a Netflix series.

  • I'm not really a JRPG guy, and the Japanese make challenging games so I usually find myself playing on the easiest level to help me enjoy the story. Loved Persona 4 so this was right up my alley, there's something liberating about revisiting your school years, though I never had to contend with all the monster hunting. Nor did I have to go to school on Saturdays but hey ho.

  • One of the biggest surprises of 2017. Really authentic and true to its Megadrive roots, but still only possible on more up to date hardware, this is really how all re-imaginings should be (see also Ratchet and Clank). Could do with a "bookmarking" style of game saving though.

  • A big surprise as I felt disappointed with the first game in the series. But while many insist this is a single player game, I love the over the top multiplayer with its sprawling battlefields,AI soldiers and everyone dropping Titans all over the place. And yes, the story campaign IS topski, but a little short not to mention easy.

  • Many peoples top game of 2016. I'm not usually as into Uncharted as your typical PlayStation gamer because I find the shooting controls to be a little off. But as a blockbusting ripping yarn, you can't beat an Uncharted adventure. Have grown to love these characters and will miss them, but glad they got a great send off, with scope for additional stories in the future (as per The Lost Legacy).

  • Originally started out playing on PC but after the PS4 version got its 60fps update for Pro consoles I switched to the console version. It also didn't help that the PC version started hemorrhaging players from the get go.

Does with MOBA gaming what Borderlands did with dungeon crawling RPGs. Fun and witty as well.

  • It was no surprise that someone created a special limited edition SNES replica cartridge for HLD around the time of its release onto PS4. A tough game, but worth persevering with (or you could try it's new Easy mode). You also always feel a little more bad ass as a lone warrior. Excellent music and retro inspired visuals.

  • I'll admit I do like CoD, but I have been able to find other games I want to play more of on PS4. I would say that Black Ops 3 is my favourite in this generation out of the 4 games that have already come ou. The BO series has always been the most forward thinking since Modern Warfare gave the series a shot in the arm in 2007.

  • A re-imagining of one of my favourite PS2 games but with all of the character and playability of the later Ratchet games. It's great to revisit where it all began but with all the characters fully developed.

I love the Ratchet games as they are charming, funny and not afraid to pile on the action.

  • Wasn't expecting much after the first game. They managed to turn out a great non-GTA open world urban game in Watch Dogs 2. One to rival Sleeping Dogs too (a game I played on PS3 so it's also not in this list). The game gives you loads to do and San Francisco is a great city to patrol.

  • The only game I ever got for free on PS Plus that I kept returning too (that I didn't already own). Football with cars has been tried before (and I am not talking about just SARPBC), but somehow they managed to get it right this time.

  • Different to the Vita version in the games path and narrative, it should be classed as its own experience so I am allowing this to go here. Was great to play in this charming world in 60fps too. A true adventure that can warm anyone's heart.

  • Despite really enjoying this one, I do realise that it was a bit of a disappointment. Without any of the hype that preceded it, as well as all the "de-hype" that came directly before it's late 2016 release, it is good enough to stand on its own. Maybe with a little tightening of the controls as well as an improvement in it's performance, it would have been a classic.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus were not games I instantly took to, but I knew what to expect before I played Last Guardian. A strong emotive game which lasts a good length.
