Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Review

2
  • WiiU

Ten years later, this frustrating follow-up to Canvas Curse feels shallow and soulless by comparison.

In 2005, owners of the Nintendo DS were waiting for a game that demonstrated the benefit of a dual-screen portable with a touchscreen. The handheld had been out for seven months, and many of its titles were ports (Super Mario 64 DS) or collections of minigames (WarioWare: Touched!, Feel the Magic XY/XX). Nintendo hadn't yet sold anyone on the notion that we needed a touchscreen-based handheld.

The star dash is one of the few special abilities that Kirby has access to.
The star dash is one of the few special abilities that Kirby has access to.

Kirby: Canvas Curse came along in June, and was the first to really deliver on that promise. Its gameplay was simple, requiring players to draw paths on the touchscreen for Kirby to follow. Navigating the levels wasn’t a complex procedure, but it nonetheless felt like a unique experience that was custom-made for the DS (this is before the iPhone and iPad made touch-controlled games commonplace). I had a great time with the game, and I certainly wasn’t alone. It’s widely regarded as one of the best early titles in the DS library.

Almost a decade later, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse revives the format for the Wii U. While the touchscreen gameplay is intact and it features a gorgeous clay-based art style, the experience of actually playing it is a far cry from those early DS days.

One thing you’ll notice right off the bat is that it’s almost impossible to look at the TV screen while you’re playing. There’s no good way to determine where the stylus is located if it’s not actively touching the screen, so your eyes need to be glued to the GamePad if you want to play this game.

On the surface, the gameplay seems similar enough to Canvas Curse. You lead Kirby by drawing rainbow-colored paths for him to follow, and you can scoot him along faster by tapping on him directly. If you collect 100 stars, you can hold the stylus on him for a moment to charge a star dash that can break through special blocks and do extra damage to bosses.

Nothing about the gameplay feels broken, it just feels soulless this time around. Levels are linear and don’t offer much in the way of challenge, and it’s rare that it strays from the “guide Kirby to the exit and collect stars” formula. Canvas Curse incorporated Kirby’s power to inherit abilities from dead enemies, but that’s been taken out for this entry. Occasional levels will have Kirby morphing into a rocket, torpedo, or tank, but these stages feel even more stripped-down and simple than the standard levels.

There are seven worlds (with three levels each) that fit squarely within traditional platformer themes, and each one ends with a boss fight. Many of these are frustrating, and require a level of precise control that your stylus just can’t provide. Even with so few worlds, you’ll see more than one boss recycled for another area with a minor twist (this time he’s underwater!).

Outside of using a rainbow path to shuttle Kirby along to the end of each level, there isn’t much to do. Each stage has a handful of (barely) hidden treasure chests that unlock figurines, and you can also collect little bonuses like music tracks and diary pages. None of these collectibles inspired me to go out of my way to obtain them, but they don’t add much in the way of challenge even if I had gone for 100%. Bare-bones challenge rooms can also be unlocked after beating areas, but they’re nothing more than an assortment of 15-second rooms that task you with getting to a treasure chest in time.

Up to three other players can join in to babysit Kirby.
Up to three other players can join in to babysit Kirby.

Other players can hop in and out with a variety of Wii U-compatible controllers, and they appear as Waddle Dees. It’s actually refreshing to play as them, as they can be directly controlled with a standard controller rather than the unreliable stylus paths. Several frustrating boss fights are made more tolerable if you have a friend jump in as Waddle Dee and spam melee attacks while you simply try to wrangle Kirby’s movements and keep him alive.

Playing Kirby and the Rainbow Curse was a tedious experience from beginning to end, and it lacks the "time and place" factor of Canvas Curse. If Nintendo was more open to bringing its properties to mobile and tablets, I could see the game being more appealing as a cheap eShop or iPad title. As a full-fledged $40 Wii U title, however, it only feels like a disappointment.

This is disappointing to read. But hey, Dan himself thought the experience was barebones and has his right to express what he thinks. Curious as to what guys like Jeff and Alex think of this.

Clay Kirby is still adorable, DANG IT!

A bit disheartening to read but I'm still getting it. I play more on the gamepad with other Wii u games anyways so I'm not sure that will be much of an issue for me. Can't wait to try it if it can give me some vibes similar to epic yarn.

Stop with the reviews already

Do not listen to this man. I'm pretty sure Dan's reviews are my favorite thing he does on the site.

I remember feeling fairly frustrated by Canvas Curse back in the day because I just couldn't get used to drawing lines to dodge stuff so I wasn't planning to buy this anyway but... ow.

Well, guess I'll just go with the Wii Kirby then.

Wow, I did NOT see that coming.

Also, I'm going to gingerly step away from these comments. A two star review of a Nintendo game is sure to bring some ugliness.

Full-fledged Wii U titles cost 50% more than this game. It's already a budget title for the console.

The Giant Bomb comments won't get too bad, but boy-oh-boy, do not go and look at the GameSpot review comments where Alexa Ray Corriea gave it a 5/10.

Alexa at Gamespot gave it a 5/10 and pretty much felt the same as Dan. I wasn't looking forward to staring at my gamepad the whole time when I have a big TV, but more than that a platformer where you don't have direct control of the character seems frustrating.

This game doesn't seem like it's on the right platform to begin with since most of the user's attention is placed on the touch screen and not the TV.

Honestly, this seems to apply to almost every story GameSpot writes. The comments are constantly hostile and insane. It's like these two sites are located on two different planets instead of inside the same building.

Bummed about this, as Canvas Curse is one of my favorite games ever. Still will check it out because my preorder already shipped it's possible I'll feel differently.

It struck me as weird seeing the game was priced at $40. To me I thought that meant it was going to be a shorter game, priced accordingly. Which I'm all for, good on them. Now after reading the review, and will jump into the QL after this, I'm worried even $40 is too high for this game. Especially with it being described as "soulless." Sorry Wii U, you'll have to wait a little bit longer to be turned on again.

Dan seems like the kind of guy who would hate Epic Yarn for having zero challenge and overly simple gameplay. I dunno if he's ever talked about it but that's the vibe I get from this review. I played the demo at Best Buy and while it is a little simple, it's not super easy and I found it to be quite enjoyable.

The comments here are sunshine and rainbows (pardon the pun) here compared to the ones on the Gamespot reviews. Most of them are the same old toxic crap, but the "best" ones are those who are claiming that Dan and Alexa are in a conspiracy to take Kirby down. Actually, I would like premium content in which Dan and Alexa star through own illuminati. The world would run on wrestling and Frodo.

Actually, this does point out a truly agregious oversight: why has Alexa not been on any GB content yet? I demand the illumanti to investigate.

When this game was announced, I had the concern mentioned in this review about not being able to look at the TV while playing...I guess that's only needed for multiplayer and maybe if someone else is watching you play. Makes it seem like a bad fit for the Wii U right off the bat...this concept made sense back on the DS.

I was going to pick this up, but Dan makes it seem sorta boring, maybe I'll hold off for a bit. The art style is great, so I still want to play it at some point...maybe during the summer doldrums when (hopefully) I can get a deal on it.

I just watched the Quick Look, and yeah, it looks like this would get boring super quickly, and I don't want to have to stare at the tablet the whole time. Seems like an awfully strange design choice to put this on the Wii U instead of something similar on the 3DS.

Knowing Alex really enjoyed Kirby's Epic Yarn (and me loving the first bits of it) makes me really curious to hear what he thinks. Hearing Alexa not liking it is perhaps a good warning but you never know.

Just got done watching the Quicklook. Game might be short or whatever, but Soulless seemed like a pretty strong word to use in your tagline after watching the video.

But hey what do I know. Nothin I guess.

This much was obvious to me since the game was first announced and it's the main reason I'll never play this game. I don't buy nice new TVs and new consoles to play games on some shitty little screen.

While I still think it's poisonous and pathetic, I kind of 'get' the sess pool of angry Wii U owners over at Gamespot. I mean Kirby is the only thing coming out for the damn console until Splatoon. It's one of lets say five games that will come out on the system this year that will be worth a damn. So to have it bomb like this has to be somewhat devastating, if you figured this was going to be your jam until Splatoon came trucking a long (boy if that game underdelivers, reviewers will be in a world of hurt :P).

Me I'll be sitting over here playing real videogames like Hyrule Warriors and Metroid Prime Trilogy without a care in the world.

In my head I hear Dan going "what? This is a kids game, what adult could like this? I am an adult man that does not watch kids cartoons, I watch cool adult things like wrestling and play deep complex adult cool guy games like metal gear solid."

I kinda wish college Dan and current Dan could both exist at once.

Ignoring that i still dont agree that putting a price point in a review shouldnt be done, a review is the last thing i expected a "Nintendo should make games for mobile." Would have been better if he said 3DS even though i also disagree with that.

That's great, if a game's price doesn't change. Anyway, i said to ignore my personal opinion on that, cause i just take more issue on the latter point.
