I think that rule was probably added because Piccolo killed Krillen in a previous tournament and was able to advance.
I don't think there's actual precedent for it in the manga (Piccolo's henchman killed Krillin after the tournament). It was probably just general concern given how intense some of Goku's final matches got. Or possibly something they brought up earlier during some of the matches with the Crane school since they were trained assassins.
Incidentally, man I wish this podcast covered old-ass Dragonball, they'd love it.
The thing about the Kai's power levels people seem to forget when they argue about how strong they should be, there is a difference between power and authority.
Quick note about the Dragon balls and the supreme Kai. Without spoiling anything, the origin of the dragon balls and their creators gets only revealed waaaaaaaaaaaaaay into Dragon ball super but i can tell you it is none of the characters in DBZ
(Some good Vegeta moments I'm surprised they didn't comment on)
Videl's beatdown is truly horrific; way more intense and grounded than you tend to expect from this show.
I don't know what's going on with all the costumed voice changes in English, they never do that in Japanese, works just as well. Idk I'll stop harping on that.
Some quick notes:
Ma Junior is indeed a reference to original Dragon Ball, which Piccolo as we know him entered the last tournament in DB under. Piccolo very publicly ran rampant years before, so they keep it on the down-low for regular people as to not cause panic. Piccolo usually has pretty solid logic.
However, Spopovitch, Punter and the other goobs are referenced as having competed in tournaments off-screen, Spopovitch notably defeated by Mr.Satan, none of the fighters besides the Z crew are competitors we've seen in tournaments before.
Videl told Gohan about her deceased mom when training to fly, they talk about their parents, how Goku is coming back for the tournament and how Satan is overprotective of her.
I'll also say without spoiling anything, I understand the disappointment of not seeing Vegeta and Goku throw down in the tournament, but the saga delivers in a myriad of satisfying ways, stay tuned.
This batch of episodes was a bit of a drag for me, it just spent so long on doing so little, so I'm expecting the hosts here to provide the entertainment instead as usual. This podcast is great!
My biggest surprise from these episodes was that I had forgotten how much build-up Supreme Kai gets. All I remembered was him being a loser who's weaker than every Saiyan. Is he seriously stronger than Piccolo?
@redhotchilimist: Piccolo quit the fight because he's merged with Kami and his Kami part sensed that he had to respect someone who's above him in the god hierarchy.
Kami < Kai < Grand Kai < Supreme Kai < Grand Supreme Kai = God of Destruction < Zeno

Interesting. It's the opposite for me. I loved this batch of episodes, largely because I love the World Tournament saga so much. Videl kicks ass, the whole Mighty Mask plot thread rules (hang on Jeff, you will be rewarded), and there's a lot of great Bulma and Chichi humor in the stands, as well as Mr. Satan working. The introduction of Kaioshin (Supreme Kai) is exceptional. I was very excited for this episode of ASG because of all the potential for wrestling references but was bummed when Jeff and Dan spent an inordinate amount of precious podcast time on tangents about the minutia rules of the fictional universe, hemming and hawing over perceived logical inconsistencies of background characters from throwaway visual gags (like the Super Saiyan shirt), what Krillin's religion is, and more obnoxious Yamcha trashing.
Not that I think Chi Chi is a well written character, but in her defense she's been a single mom for the last 7 years and is the main breadwinner. Also, about this "fine with her children enduring harm for money" thing, her kids are some of the most powerful beings on Earth. They can destroy planets and survive mountains falling on them. And to her knowledge, anyone else that could pose a challenge are friends of the family that wouldn't try to seriously harm her kids. Chi Chi's initial concern about Gohan entering the tournament wasn't about his saftey, but that it was a distraction from his studies. She has faith in her kids!
Ma Junior was, yes. He was originally entered into the tournament as Ma Junior in Dragonball. Seriously guys, just do Dragonball. You'll enjoy life more

Keep in mind that at this point the Saiyans are already absurdly powerful (and Piccolo is right behind them) with only a tiny handful of characters outclassing them in the entire universe. Shin is still very powerful himself, as he reveals in the next batch of episodes that he and the other former Supreme Kais would have been powerful enough individually to take out Frieza with ease. Also it's fairly impressive that he was able to immobilize Super Saiyan 2 Gohan long enough for Spopovich to jump him and start draining his energy. But no, Shin isn't more powerful than Piccolo from what we can tell, Piccolo just assumed Shin is in a class of his own because he's so high up in the universal hierarchy. Piccolo is more freaking out about the notion that such a being would even be in his presence at all.
Also, I don't think this is explained until Super, but they can't get a proper reading on Shin's power anyway because he's a Deity with Divine Ki rather than regular Ki. Oh, and we also find out in Super that there's a bigger hierarchy and it kinda makes more sense why the Supreme Kais aren't as all-powerful as you might originally expect them to be.
TL;DR - Nah, Big Green could probably body him, he's just freaking out.
@sigma1199: Forgetting that Goku is (technically) dead (again), I was about to read that comment as a sick burn that "having a kid with Goku is basically the same as being a single parent".
?️idel is definitely just a Japanese thing. While v sounds can sometimes be formed the more natural replacement is a B. Still works as an anagram for devil, too! (debiru)
This series really doesn't know how to handle female characters, its a damn shame because they have the potential to be really badass.
I think this particular story arc does a much better job than normal with Videl. I mean, yes, she does get the shit beaten out of her, but she doesn't go down without a fight and she gets beaten by a guy who is planning to attack Gohan, who spent his childhood getting into fights with beings that make gods shit themselves. Not really a fair fight. Otherwise, she's smart and strong and has a will and personality of her own without any of those things coming across as forced. She's just a good character.
I am more bummed that Android 18 doesn't get more screen time, because the few things she does do are pretty great (lfighting Goten/Trunks, extorting money out of Mr Satan) but she doesn't get to do or even say much beyond that and she gets harassed by Master Roshi in the worst way possible. There's also no reason why she couldn't have had a bigger presence in the fights. They instead decide to make two male children do all the fighting and 18 has already proven she can beat those two at the same time - and they have no idea how much more powerful fusion will make these kids. Still, at least neither Videl nor 18 gets reduced to "nagging middle-aged woman" like Chi-Chi or Bulma, nor are they reduced to submissive shells there for the men.
And I already know that 18 gets to do a whole bunch of fighting towards the end of Super, but then I'd have to watch more of Super.

Lol fucking best first comment. It's so sad that Videl's only canon fight is her getting her teeth kicked in for fifteen minutes.
Yeah, I always found it a bit weird how this bit makes Supreme Kai seem like a very powerful being but he never actually does anything. When it is time to fight, he basically hides behind Goku, Vegeta, and Gohan until none of them are left to defend him and he panic attacks Fat Buu.
I always read the whole Piccolo being terrified of Shin not because of Shin's raw power, but because Piccolo has "divine Ki" from fusing with Kami, and it's almost more that he subconsciously recognizes that Shin is a being far, far, FAR beyond him in terms of the cosmic hierarchy.
@justin258: I get your points but when I first watched DBZ Videl and 18 were two of my favorite characters...and they just get shunted to the side very quickly and get married off to be moms/wives. They never really get to meaningfully contribute to anything that happens in DBZ or what I've seen of Super (to be fair I'm keeping pace with the Funimation Dub so idk what happens with 18 in the final saga). As a fan of those characters I just want to see them do cool stuff, and it doesn't happen.
I think it speaks to the need for Goku and Vegeta to always take center stage though. It isn't necessarily a sexism thing as much as just the writers/Toriyama playing favorites.
my unOfficial take on dragon ball gt being worst than super. LOOK they literally brought it to America and skipped 13 of the 64 episodes cause they thought the first 13 episodes (which they made up themselves thus could have been anything) were too boring. makes me think or realize why so many creative people in Japan follow the top talent for designing stories. We got lucky with code geauss but overall you need a creative person to helm your stuff.
