Game of the Year 2014: Day One Recap

I always loved GB's intentional cheesy corny-ness during their GOTY videos. Definitely a Ryan thing.

This includes all of the stupid videos they recorded before their GOTY videos, a la wearing a poncho and a sombrero with a hat under it.

But the straight-man Danny narration is pure excellence. Very Ripley's Belive It Or Not.

By far my favorite.

This is great - I completely forgot about the theme stuff, so it wasn't until Dan pulled out the N64 I realised they were doing a bit. This site is so beautifully weird. Hope we get more found-footage style stuff from THE EVENT. Mockumentary of them in new lives is a great idea.

Good gravy, that was hilarious. Alex absolutely nailed it. The look he gave the camera when he put on his "hat" had me in tears.

If day 1 is any indication thisll be the best series of GOTY videos yet

I have to say I did not enjoy this video. I hate to say it. It just felt a bit overproduced to be honest and that's just not what I come to Giant Bomb for.

Oh well. Plenty more content to go around.

this is good, but it cant beat the 2012 GOTY vids.....im still hooked on the hunkadunk man.....

The way the crew acted at first made it look like they were doing award deliberations and a mailbag at the same time. But once the Prototype Mario Party cartridge was shown and Dan whipped an N64 out of his butt, I learned this was going to get insane. Hell of a start for GOTY 2014 GB crew!

@servernode: You haven't seen any of the other GB GOTY videos have you? This is how they do it and it's great. I think it will grow on you if you give it a chance. The 2012 ones in particular are excellent if you want to go back and watch them.

I was actually disappointed at first because I thought they weren't going to do the usual video stuff that they do, but then Dan whipped out the N64 and then I realised that something wasn't right and boy it was just fantastic. Can't wait to see what else they come up with over the course of the week.

@twisted: I have. Not a fan of those either. I just don't find them trying to be funny, you know, actually funny. It stops feeling like I'm hanging out in a room with my friends and just feels like they are trying way to hard.

I don't know, I also just feel like they put too much work into the game of the year stuff anyway. All the staff lists, wrap ups, ect seem pointless once I've listened to the deliberations podcasts. If I could trade allllllllll of it other than the podcasts for a few quicklooks and a year end live stream I would do it in a heartbeat.

Now, I'm not trying to say that they shouldn't produce these videos or anything, clearly I am a minority. They just don't do anything for me personally. Didn't help that they had to play D4 and I've already watched that opening section played twice on the site.

@servernode: Well it's a shame you don't enjoy them really, but fair enough. Personally I think they do a great job with the scripts and I much prefer these over just a bunch of quick looks :P

I do agree that their underproduced "dudes hanging out playing games" attitude to everything is why I come here too. Just as a once a year specialty though, these GOTY videos are great. If they happened more often, I think I'd start to lose interest too.

I thought it was real until Dan just pulled and N64 out of nowhere. I think that's my favorite thing I've seen all year.

Unfortunately, I agree with you. Not my favorite thing. But hey, people seem to like it, and I still enjoy the 3/4 of the video that comes after.

Wait... So, is this the same as the bombcasts? Should I watch this before or after the casts or does it not matter? WHAT'S HAPPENING MY WORLD IS UPSIDE DOWN..?!

If you haven't sussed it out yet, the bombcasts are the deliberations that lead up to the end results in these videos. The most logical thing is to listen to the respective day's bombcast before watching the video so that you understand how they came to these conclusions.
