Splatoon had the benefit of being incredibly novel the first time around.

A small step up over the WiiU version isn't going to negate all the negatives that comes with the Nintendo online platform. Until Nintendo sorts that part out we are going to keep seeing their games "get shafted"

@klb: It was ported to PS4 and Vita this year with added online.

For as long as Destiny 2 doesn't end up taking that one I am fine with PUBG.

@boonsong: I get that, but it's not a 2017 release. The PS4 port was considered for the old games category, like the Switch port of Mario Kart.

Honestly if I want to play multiplayer I'd just play more Titanfall 2, but I guess I personally would've defaulted to Tekken 7 from this year's choices. I'm with Abby on thinking Battlegrounds is boring. Obviously it's a different game but I've done some rounds of that Fortnite BR and it made me completely understand the appeal of that design. Which is to say that the way you maximize your chances of winning by being the shittiest creep of a player imaginable, is undeniably an exhilarating experience. There are even people out there who find that thought of winning SO important that they resort to hacking. Also try turning on voice chat in a public match. PUBG attracts a lot more negativity and trollish behavior to gaming than its player base cares to admit but hey, at least it streams well.

Destiny 2 reuses not only maps, but weapons, armor, classes, and abilities from the first game. After they said loot wouldn't carry over because it should be a whole new adventure.

I mean we all know what's gonna win (I think? Only 10 minutes in as I type) but remember folks, the journey is oft more interesting than the destination. Hence the reason it's so cool that the GB crew releases these full deliberations, just interesting hearing the conversation.

Somehow it's 2017 and still people are whining about voice chat in Splatoon and this perceived notion of Nintendo not getting multiplayer or the internet right.

It's kinda funny seeing them argue for Destiny 2 after all the shit that happened in the last month. Aren't strikes not available anymore for vanilla players?

Haven't watched it all yet, but the fact that Splatoon 2 doesn't allow you to play with your friends on the same team unless you first rank up without your friends at all should disqualify it outright. Additionally, the co-op mode being on a schedule is straight up stupid.

Are there anymore streamlined videos for these? I always remembered shorter videos just announcing the winners. I don’t really need the deliberations (I know that’s just me, I just like the short versions)

If Abby felt so strongly about Splatoon 2, she needs to articulate her reasons why more than just "I had a lot more fun with Splatoon 2" or "I had fun with Splatoon 2 in bed". I don't think she gave a single description of the game in support of why she found it so fun. Strong arguments require specifics. Vinny asked her about a specific weapon in the game, that apparently was quite popular, and she had no idea what he was talking about. I'm sure there were more specific descriptions of Splatoon that could have swayed some of them, but there wasn't even an attempt, just an insistence that it was "fun".

I'm glad she supported Destiny 2, it gave it the edge it needed to push out Nidhogg.

Surprised how quickly Injustice 2 got the axe. That got me into multiplayer moreso than any other fighting game has.

Their best Old Game of 2017 was a version of the game that released in 2017. There's not much logic to these qualifiers.

I thought early access games weren't being considered? Or was that just for overall game of the year.

BTW I played like no multiplayer games this year so the only ones I can really think of are Everybody's Golf, Cuphead, Knack 2, and Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash.

Honestly they need to start having a Best Remaster/Remake category.

Was divinity original sin 2 not on this list? Is this a joke? And by that I do not mean it should be top three, but it should at least be mentioned in the discussion. There is almost nothing like it out there, it is great fun in coop, chaotic and with a bit of imagination you manage to make a pretty great experience on its own even better. It is an experience as close as a real life P&P RPG as you can get in a regular videogame.

Also holt shit people are being kinda dickish towards Abby in these comments. Even if she was doing a supposedly "bad job" at GOTY-ing (she isn't) remember 1. this is hers (and Ben and Jan's) first time doing this, and 2. it wasn't exactly her job description to be an on camera entertainer and editor. At the very least go easy on her (though I think she's doing fine despite her not really being required to do this in any way shape or form). Bless his heart, but at least she doesn't seem to give up on her personal faves right away like Alex seems to.

Am I the only person who thinks 1v1 fighters being in the "multiplayer" category is a little weird?
