I don't like this about myself. But this category makes me giddy like nothing else. Wish it was longer and I enjoy every second of it.

It is also the least competitive. Everyone is glad to discuss the tragedy of bad quality beyond taste or opinion.

Youse guys are oddly cunty about MEA, it’s still the best Star Trek game since ME3 and it’s full of fun and memorable moments and characters like TF man? Like it’s an 8 by open world 7 by Mass Effect standards like actually saying MEA is worse than Agents of Mayhem & Sonic and on par with Bubsy and Drawn to Death you’re just being a sour asshole and holding it to too high a standard

I am going to get a t-shirt with the above printed on it, and wear it out of equal parts anger and sadness.

@decku: I disagree. Even if you distanced it from the franchise, it was incredibly technically poor, the characters were bad, it was narratively incomplete, and so on.

The broken-ness of MEA seems like a "your mileage will vary" thing, I played that game from launch on PC and saw maybe a fourth the number of bugs Brad seems to have encountered. Bugs aside, the game is undoubtedly a disappointment, particularly in the shadow of the beloved holy trilogy. However, while the story and characters may not live up to that high bar I didn't find the majority of it offensively bad, certainly not enough to win this award. Like... it's fine, the gameplay was often fun and I certainly don't regret playing through it. The glimmers of actual good memorable character moments that are sprinkled throughout can be viewed as fodder for disappointment but I guess for me personally it didn't cause anger. MEA was easily my most anticipated game going into this year and it's a net bummer the way it turned out but I don't think it "hangs" on this list. But it's not my list and I respect their choices, obviously. Mass Effect isn't dead, I would bet we see another one within 10 years.

Honestly don't think MEA deserved to even be in contention. Compared to absolute trash like Bubsy and Drawn to Death it doesn't really belong. It's a disappointment for sure, but that's not what the category is about. I don't know how you can hear even a few seconds of that Drawn to Death dialogue and not immediately proclaim it worst game of the year.

Preface- these awards are arbitrary I know.

My take on this one was that Brad has a lot of anger and MEA had spite on its side. Actions speak louder than words - he played tons of hours of the game....you don't do that for the Worst Game. You play 15 min and say that is trash and then turn it off - simple as that. MEA would win "Game that filled us with the most Spite and Anger", "Game that ruined a franchise", "Game with Most Bugs", "Game with Biggest Budget to Worst Decisions Made" etc.... Actual Worst Game? C'mon.

They are confusing disappointment in Mass Effect too much with worst game. There is a playable game in there, this alone would disqualify Mass Effect Andromeda from worst game.

i agree with the bad state at launch,it came out early than it should,i agree at it being a disappointment, but putting it at the same level of the other games on that list is crazy for me,they made dragon age inquisition in the mass effect universe, which is fine but not what i want from ME

@deanoxd: They have a long clip on the site showing some of the bugs and glitches during a cutscene and it looks like some weird horror arthouse film. Alex and Vinny also encountered a bug on stream where they could not move forward with their mission because some thing wouldn't trigger. I haven't even played ME:A and I know about so many of the weird bugs and glitches because it's all over YouTube.

Perhaps a lot of that has been patched now, but at launch it certainly was not just out of some sort of weird spite towards EA.

@boonsong: sure there were bug's almost every new game we play now a days has them at lunch, but from my POV PUBG is hot mess of a game but since they like it, it gets a pass on all its faults since its been in the wild. myself and two other friends pre ordered ME:A and played right at launch and none of us experienced anything like @brad talk's about. my biggest issue is the mountain out of mole hill the GB crew make out of everything towards EA because its the cool thing to do.

In defense of Mass Effect, the multiplayer is really good. Or it was until they stopped supporting it, since the rest of the game is hot garbage.

@deanoxd: Personally I don't really get the PUBG hysteria because I already played a lot of ARMA and original Operation Flashpoint and PUBG just felt like one of those to me, just very simplified and with a little twist to it but with the same kind of feeling of tension. Also I'm more of a single-player guy anyway. And I can't speak against your own experience of ME:A obviously, and as I said I haven't played it myself so I can't really speak much of it at all, but just from what I have seen of it from an outsider perspective, watching streams and clips of it, it just looked like a mess to me or at least a potential one for a lot of people.

I still don't understand why people hate ME:A. I haven't finished it yet, because it's by far the longest of all the Mass Effect games, but I have enjoyed all 57 hours I've put into it so far. The mobility, platforming and level-up system are all really fun, in my view, and I do like most of the characters. The story and writing isn't as good as the other three, but it is absolutely NOT one of the worst games of the year. Flawed? Yeah, but it's still well above average in terms of shooters or sci-fi games.

I get that it isn't structured like the first 3 but it's obviously not trying to be and I think it does mostly succeed at what it's going for. In contrast, based on the Quick Looks, Bubsy looked poorly designed and executed from start to finish and DtD is completely shallow and obnoxious.

Adding Super Bomberman R is an odd choice given the support Konami has put behind it. It's a totally fine Bomberman game at this point.

Pretty infuriating to see Sonic Forces on there, especially since it doesn't seem like genuine dislike of the game. Just yet again another chance to dunk on the series because they hate furries, 'tude or whatever. The game has mostly positive score on Steam, for crying out loud! I'm not a major Sonic fan but I thought it looked pretty neat. When I talk to Sonic fans, they say it's not the best but it's still okay. It could be up for most disappointing but to say worst is such a stretch.

This whole category is a let down, if only because it feels like they didn't even put in the minimal effort to go through their quick looks to make a list. Like where is that multiplayer game where you have to teabag an opponent to win that Jeff hated? Double Dragon IV? Or Vroom in the Night Sky which they played on Switch launch that looked like a pile of hot garbage?

I played Andromeda near launch and honestly didn't get that many bugs. I enjoyed the combat and environments. I understand the "ruinous effect" issue with its reception putting the franchise on ice, but on sheer quality, I don't think it deserves this award.

ETA after watching more of the video: OK, I see this is another unilateral Brad decision.

ME:A is boring. Super boring. The multiplayer is worse than ME:3 multiplayer, but yea, I played about 10-15 hours of it as well, in an effort to get into it. It's bad though and I can't apologize for it. It is/was my favorite series, and I feel just like Brad does on this. Previous ME's engaged me in the story like no other game has, ME:A had none of that. On top of that, Brad's bugs are super valid.

I played ME;A after the bugs were fixed. Worst game of the year? Hard to say. My least favorite game was For Honor, but that was purely a matter of taste. What I can say is that even with minimal bugs, the characters in ME:A are still mostly grating, the side quests are still dull as dirt (and take forever), the main story still feels incomplete, the new friendly alien species looks like a sketch drawn by a (not particularly talented) 8 year old, and it still killed the franchise. If you managed to find some enjoyment in it, that's fine, but there are plenty of legitimate gripes against that game you could make.

Mass Effect Andromeda was bad, but I don't think it was THAT bad. I think Brad is being a tad hyperbolic. I played it 2-3 months after release, post a few patches to fix the worst stuff. And yeah it was still buggy here and there. Probably the worst bug I encountered playing on PS4 is driving the Nomad around. For some reason on every planet the Nomad would intermittently hitch and freeze on screen, while the audio would still be going as if it were still moving. That was annoying. I haven't played in lately to see if it's still like that.

I enjoyed playing ME:A for what it was. It IS disappointing, and it's annoying that there are major plot threads not tied up that were obviously meant for DLC that never happened or was ever planned, instead making it a book instead, which I have NO interest in at all. Not because I don't like reading, but because I shouldn't have to go read a book to find out shit that should have been in the game.

But all that being said, I don't think it's the WORST game this year.

That would be like me saying that the RRoD was 'overblown' because my launch-era 360 is still working 12 years later. There's plenty of documented evidence that this game was released way too early for public consumption.

Man. Mass Effect: Andromeda might the biggest disagreement I've ever had with the GB staff. I played it at launch on PS4 running into almost no bugs/glitches.

The idea that ME:A is worse than fucking Drawn to Death and Bubsy is one of the most insane things I've ever heard.
