I misinterpreted what Most Distressing meant when the category was first said and figured TLOU2 was a lock, but what we got was just as good. Lots of righteous anger and it was all great.

I fucking kid you not, I got some fuckin weird video error while listening to this in the shower, AND IT LOOPED PERFECTLY FROM WHERE ALEX MENTIONS GROUNDHOG DAY AT THE START, TO THE END BIT, THEN IT LOOPS RIGHT AS HE SAYS GROUNDHOG DAY.

I was sitting here in my shower saying "haha funny joke giant bomb, groundhog day repeating itself, funny joke," only to find out it actually was a video error that somehow, impossibly, looped at the perfect place for a joke. Well done giant bomb media streaming technology.

Found it 2'38" for start of Distressing Game for anyone who wants to skip best moment. Just be careful, 30 seconds earlier and they're still talking finals.

I wish that Jason had won out with PSO2 since the Avengers campaign was enjoyable but I get it.

Day 4 was great, might be another iteration of the name for 'Most DIstressing Game' that gets the point across better but I thought they did a good job of wading through the minefield of messes by focusing it on games.

The less categories = more discussion approach feels like a great middle ground of different GOTY formats that lets them talk smartly and positively about the things that they loved.

Vinny and Alex both cracking over the end of Spiritfarer cut me deep, especially when Alex was talking up to the very ending and I suddenly remembered what happened to him this year. My heart just sank for him. I picked up the game and started it not too long ago (because of Patrick Klepek, actually) and now I'm eager to have my own journey with it.

Skipped the best moments after Bugsnax conversation began. And I haven't played the 3 games that made the list, so I can't give an opinion.

Most stressing was Cyberpunk 2077 with a bullet. I was actually enjoying the story and gameplay, but those minor bugs just became so annoying that I stopped playing it. And now I have to wait until possibly the end of the year for the game to possibly get fixed. There is a good chance I won't care anymore and moved on to other games by then. I've played Warcraft III and enjoyed it, but never finished it. A well done remake would've been right up my alley, too bad they blew it. PSO2 I actually downloaded on steam, but never got around to playing it. Now after hearing Jason and Jeff's calling out how its a microtransactions trap and you can't even enjoy the free-to-play, I might delete it.

As far as Avengers... I enjoyed the campaign, outside of Tony Stark's horrible characterization. The end game stuff definitely could have been done better. And it does seem like it was an afterthought to make money. But PSO2 should be in the top 3, if it really is that crappy with what's been added when it was finally released in the States. Jeff cutting Jason off and saving the game because of his personal fond memories was kind of stressing in itself. Jeff should now be in the top 3.

I'm just dropping in to reiterate that I'm really enjoying the format and deliberations this year. The return of categories is great; the structure clearly works well for the staff. Also there has been a good mixture of people hearing each other out and playful fighting. Altogether this has been a real pleasure to listen to while I recover from some health stuff.

I'm surprised Deadly Premonition 2 did not make the Most Distressing list. That game definitely was troubled and troubling, and still has not been patched to make it technically competent let alone a message that it will improve significantly any time soon. I think Swery is a wonderful creator and I loved the first game but damn...A Blessing in Disguise is roughhh.

Brads case for Warcraft 3 didn’t sell me. It’s a half arsed remaster, there’s been plenty of half arsed remasters (another notable one in 2020 being that 3D Mario collection). Trying to loop back and have it be about Activision taking over Blizzard didn’t feel genuine either.

PSO2 should have made it... but I’m still happy with any dunking SE get, even if second hand, so :P

Is there anyone else who feels that the best story moments of Hades happen in the post-game? I find it unfortunate that the Bombers had not delved into it further at this point. I don't fault them at all, though, given the demands of their work! But I hope they return to it someday.

@psydyl:

The concept of the post-game is cool, but honestly there's a lot of dissonance between the tone of post-game lines vs lines that were clearly written in the pre-10 run context that continue to play after that, it kind of breaks the whole illusion the game spent so much time building.

The most distressing moment of the year was hearing Jan and Vinnie try to articulate 13 Sentinels' convoluted plot which seems like utter nonsense. Way too much time was spent on this...the better part of an hour. I skipped ahead.

Other than that, loving the deliberations this year so far. I always look forward to this content all year long and it never disappoints.

This has been the best game of the year deliberations we've had in YEARS.

My only big of confusion is how Jeff keeps saying the Avengers' campaign is good...to each their own but it is definitely not good from either a "things you do", "how it plays", or "writing". I don't even see how Jeff, specifically, is the one arguing the campaign is good as all of the Kamala stuff that's "good" is pretty front loaded.

Also, I don't see how Phantasy Star Online 2 was supposed to ever be on this list. That's a pretty known quantity. That's like getting a Mass Effect 3 re-release and complaining about the ending. You knew what you were getting into. Like Jeff said, that game was wrong 8 years ago so there was 0 chance that would change on its slapdash North American release.

I think that "Most Distressing Game" was a poor name for the category. Even after having listened to everything "most distressing" just sounds differnet from something like "Hottest mess".

I started watching from the Distressing section, so may have missed reasoning for it, but...why was Ben seemingly lying that for a large (if not all of it) chunk of this one? Just seems lazy and unprofessional, especially as that can't help for speaking into a mic.

@jstaunton: He's been very upfront about his multiple medical issues, any number of which could render him bed/couch-ridden. But even if that weren't the case, if you'll excuse the outright dismissal, who cares? This site literally has a feature called "Unprofessional Fridays." GOTY deliberations are long and arduous. Ben has my personal permission to lay down, even though he doesn't need it.

@neau: I'm not prying into his personal issues. I've never seen him lying down for a stream before, and others have mentioned his heavy breathing being an issue (that could be as a result of his posture).

My point was that his lying down could affect his speaking properly into the mic (in this stream he suffers a lot from the issue Abby had where the mic only picks up part of what she was saying).

Your mention of UPF is genuinely pointless and I have no idea why you've referred to it (considering that was them drinking alcohol in a studio several years ago, not seriously discussing GOTY).

@jstaunton: I apologize, my initial comment came off as snarky. He was lying down during Day 3 as well, and his video wasn't on during Days 1 and 2. Ultimately, I don't know why he was lying down. My intention was only to provide a possible explanation - your initial comment appeared to jump to "laziness" before I would have. I feel like there are a lot of valid reasons to lie down during a video, and ultimately it didn't impact my enjoyment of the video. I didn't notice any breathing noises until I read the comments, and I found Ben's audio to be just fine. But that's just my experience - maybe I'm in the minority.
