Game Tapes 02: The Power of the Cell

@axersia: Was Versus shown at Sony, or just at the Square conference? There another upload of the conference here, and it appears to be the same as the GB tapes.

Why are these so much fun to watch!?

Ratchet & Clank had a gun that shot a tornado that you could vaguely steer with the Sixaxis. The only reason that thing worked because was you didn't need it. Sixaxis had fun uses when it wasn't mandatory and you didn't need to be precise.

I feel so old hearing those songs...

Folklore definitely had the best use of the Sixaxis. Ripping out souls with that controller was really satisfying.

Actually watching this press conference, this wasn't a complete disaster. The Sixth Axis stuff, GT running for way too long, $599, giant enemy crab is all pretty bad, but the rest seemed kind of normal. Tech demos, old pie charts, features of the new platform, and what's coming down the line, which in this case was Metal Gear Solid 4(!) and Uncharted(!). It wasn't the most entertaining or well paced of shows, but most press conferences have that one moment, whether it's Kinect or Wonderbook.

The truly damaging things were the Cell and the price, which would have hurt Sony even if the press conference was rock solid.

It would be amazing if they went just a little bit further back for the next episode. Nintendo was doing some amazing stuff with mail-order promo tapes in the SNES Era. And by amazing, I mean that they were made with the finest video editing and butt rock 1994 money could buy! (The actual tape starts at the 4:30 mark.)

I need the Xbox 360 MTV reveal next, ever since Ryan mentioned re-watching it like 4 years ago I thought it would be a great idea.

What was the reaction to sixaxis when it was announced? Was it ever seen as cool, or was it DOA?

@sithtoast: I'm pretty sure I still have the N64 promo tape they sent to people lying around somewhere. Man, that thing might be even more 90's.

I think Flower was a legitimately good use of the six-axis. But that might have been it...I still have nightmares about fiddling with opening/closing valves in Killzone 2.

I figured Dan would be all about watching this stuff. Wonder if he's just had something else going on for the first two tapings.

Man, press conferences used to be way more boring. At least James Cameron didn't come out and talk about Avatar for 30 minutes straight with zero footage.

I remember Heavenly Sword being the subject of a pretty infamous argument between Shane Bettenhausen and John Davison on an episode of 1UP Yours. It's probably no coincidence that Shane now works for Sony.

10 years later and Sony's conferences still have the worst cameramen

2006 was the year before I got properly in to video games as a serious hobby and reading/talking about them online, so I've never seen this before (I did play games before then, but not with the same fervour). I think the first E3 I watched properly was 2007. I've heard about the Sony Conference though; Giant Enemy Crab is impossible to escape from, as well the infamous "$599".

Not sure it beats some of the amazing highlights of various Ubisoft conferences though. I still remember James Cameron in 2009... I'll never get that time back. Drew overestimates; it was thankfully just 20 minutes of him talking.

Edit: The reason the guys think there was a Getaway game on PS2 is because there was (there were two); the trailer in 2006 is for The Getaway 3, which was cancelled alongside Eight Days.

P.S. Agent, coming soon to PS3 apparently.

Maybe I'm being too forgiving, but I think "Flower" really justified the PS3's motion-control capabilties.

I hope GB doesn't upload a clean version as a definitive version, as it's an inaccurate representation of the conference. And there should probably be note in the description as well. Don't record history if you can't do it right.

This was THE conference that I distinctly remember getting me excited about the PS3. Ultimately I found it too expensive at launch and went with the 360 for the first couple years of the generation. On top of that, watching this live on Gamespot was actually the thing that made me check out the rest of the site as a community (and it was terrible!) and slowly grow a liking to the duders.

We live in a world without sidetalkin' were clearly trapped in a dark timeline.

@jeff I know that you don't personally care for Gran Turismo, but it's still a big deal.

With GT5 and GT6 combined, they sold almost 17 million copies. 22 million if you count GT5 Prologue.

@axersia: well if they don't archive it at all then we lose most of it/the whole thing. Better than nothing i say even if it is incomplete. You don't see archaeologists waiting for an entire skeleton before classifying an animal.

I remember liking the Sixaxis with High Velocity Bowling, and that was about it.

I quite enjoyed Heavenly Sword. I still remember Kai as a character, which I can't say for most other games.

So it seems like Phil Harrison is now just a venture capitalist, investing in vidya game companies he likes. It looks like he was an early investor in Supercell (which was bought for 2 billion dollars in 2013.) Dude must be just rolling in cash. He seems super into mobile games, and I hope he helps kickstart some cool shit.
