Giant Bombcast 05-07-2013

Ryan mistakes Bob Hoskins for dead; Jeff loves Riff-Raff; Vinny loves sleep; Brad loves Dota 2; Patrick loves Ellen; the gang learns what the best console is; the Shmoo is real.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

There are some great Master System games everyone should play: Miracle Warriors (an RPG that comes with a huge fold-out world map), Golvellius (Zelda-like, but way better), Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (only the best Metroidvania out there), Impossible Mission (the Master System port is the best version of this classic), Golden Axe Warrior (another good Zelda-like), Land of Illusion, Fantasy Zone II (later ported to other platforms, including the NES and arcades), and Phantasy Star.

The Sims continues to be pretty damn popular. At least from what I can tell of the audience.

While I'm not a huge Riff Raff fan, I can see why Jeff likes him. Like he and Ryan said, he acts like a clown and just doesn't take shit serious at all. He's just having fun, and he actually has a modicum of talent compared to what's topping the charts in rap these days. Also, I was tickled to death to find out Jeff is an Action Bronson fan.

Also, to counter Ryan's claim that Riff Raff is the best at Vines, I submit Sage Francis as potentially superior in his Vines.

And the clear choice for a pizza concept album is MF Doom...

...Or Kool Keith.

I haven't seen Sage's vines, but I do agree with you on everything here. MM..Food is just the precursor to a great pizza album.

@patrickklepek was fucking spot on about raising the stakes in video games. It's hard to pay attention to the fucking galaxy getting blown up or something. It really brings no emotional response, maybe if you're REALLY invested in the characters it holds some value.

That's why I'm loving Sleeping Dogs right now. Just started playing, and the stakes aren't all that great - the most you're worried about is this undercover cop getting killed. And I'm really getting attached to the poor bastard.

Great bombcast. @jeff was spot on about the "magic" on SegaCD. As someone who had no PC at that point games like Lunar blew my mind. Ground Zero Texas and Sewer Shark... not so much lol.

Finished up the podcast this morning and while I agree with Patrick that Microsoft's "dev/pub pays for updates" scheme isn't the best answer to the problem of ubiquitous updates for every game, I don't think it's right to point to Day Z as resounding proof that a hands off approach works itself. Yeah, that dev caught a lot of flak for their game not living up to their promises, but if you remember, their response early on was essentially "Fuck y'all, we've got your money and you ain't getting a refund." It was only when Steam pulled their game essentially that people got refunds and as far as I can tell those refunds were issued at Steam/Vavle's expense.

It's pretty easy to see why Microsoft would not want that kind of additional responsibility or financial obligation for basically no reward. If the onus isn't on the dev/pub to properly test their game and patches, it doesn't make sense to expect the platform owner to do it, and if no one does it, that can have disastrous consequences for the platform owner and the industry at large. Imagine if nearly every XBLA game was broken at launch. People would blame Microsoft and their lax enforcement in no time at all.

We had a a neighbor who looked JUST LIKE THE SHMOO.

This person was possessed of the additional misfortune of being a woman between the ages of 20-30.

Before she moved in, I was a blissful innocent with no knowledge of The Shmoo's existence. But, this person's arrival compelled my partner to educate me--a dark day.

@nights: I actually rewatched the first two TMNT movies like a month ago. The first one definitely holds up better, since the second one is clearly more kid oriented, but when you consider most the crap that passes for kids entertainment these days it's still a pretty decent movie. Its pretty far from "hot garbage".

Also, the Ninja Rap is pretty much the epitome of "awful in a fun way".

I'm really glad Pat brought up this issue about Eternal Darkness. I was totally ignorant about the whole thing, till I read the comments(and the article, at IGN?) Anyways, with all the starving ppl. in the world, I have to be convinced that a particular video game is something I really want, which is possible btw. there have been some recent efforts I have good feelings towards. Just the same, where there is smoke there is fire, and I have little trust of the world. That is why I am really picky about the charities and such I give my money over to. And I have no trust of ppl. who by some intent or not, ride roughshod over their project and ppl.

@brendan: Yes. that was what triggered it for me too. I was thinking about it more after finishing listening. I build software for a living, so I take the comments about quality more seriously than most probably.

I think the challenge in testing a game is similar to the challenge in testing their site. For their site, it works well with a few people but the complexity ramps up as more people are accessing it at once. For games, it works well for a few things that people do, but as more people people play it and try more thing across more systems the complexity ramps up.

I guess consoles help to take out the "more systems" part of the equation, but I imagine there are still variances there in number of controllers, size of hard drives, wifi connected or not, updates firmware or not and so on.

Just a point of correction. The game that was all fucked up and got removed from Steam was The War Z not Day Z. Day Z is the ARMA 2 mod that inspired The War Z and is currently in development as a standalone product.

Domino's is nasty. The fact that they have a huge TV commercial campaign to apologize for the last 20 or so years of making horrible pizza should be a big red flag. Pizza Hut is also not very good, but I would take that any day over Domino's.

Papa John's is decent enough for pizza delivery.

Will next weeks Bombcast be an intervention episode for Brad's DOTA addiction?

Also, I thought Vinny's analysis of Kickstarter and the increasing complexity of what it takes to get published was spot on.

Oddly enough, I'm pretty sure the Genesis actually outsold the SNES in the US.

The Genesis outsold the SNES in the U.S. until 1993-1994 after the 1992 release of Street Fighter 2 that shifted the tide in favor of the SNES and top-selling games from the later years. That, coupled with people becoming more interested in longer-form gameplay over arcade ports, made the SNES the ultimate winner in the U.S. Oddly, enough the Mega Drive dominated the SNES in Europe due to a stronger localization effort on the part of SEGA.

Worldwide sales figures

  1. Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom – 49.10 million (Japan: 17.17 million, the Americas: 23.35 million, Other: 8.58 million)[8][33]
  2. Genesis/Mega Drive – 40 million (United States: 20 million,[34] Rest of the world: 15 million,[35]Tec Toy: 2 million,[14]Majesco: 2 million,[14]Sega Nomad: 1 million[36])
  3. TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine – 10 million (US: 2.5 million)[37]

Super Nintendo Entertainment System video games that have sold or shipped at least four million copies.

Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games that have sold or shipped at least one million copies.

Ryan's statement that not enough people care for Disney to want to release original, un-"lucased" Star Wars trilogy seems really idiotic to me. The ganging up on Brad stuff gets really old and especially makes Patrick seem like a petty prick.

My girlfriend fucking loves the Sims, but the way that each new release strips out expansion features and then re-sells them is disgusting, and she's put off by it too. Not sure if we'll buy it, honestly. She isn't even terribly excited.

I remember the shmoo I think they showed a little bit of it in the 90s but I don't know the herculoids. When they were talking about it, I was like what the fuck is a shmoo, then I checked it and remembered it was that white thing that turned into a lot of things and it had some creepy whiskers, I thought it looked cuddly when I was little but now it looks scary.
