Giant Bombcast 498: Cat Spanker's Alley

This week it's hard to talk about anything besides Destiny 2, but we also touch on Fortnite's Battlegrounds, the second coming of the NES Classic, bad YouTube behavior, worthless video game systems, Mario's embrace of the bourgeoisie, and Kinects in casinos.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Woo!!! Can't wait to hear their thoughts on Destiny 2 now that they've had it for a week now.

Edit: The Nightfall element damage indicator is actually a bug that Bungie confirmed to be fixing. It's supposed to always be on the screen.

Edit 2: Aaaaaaand they address it 5 minutes later!

I'll get in when the video feed goes up.

Also, I cant wait until the site postings for the weekly casts are consolidated. I understand why they're separate. Audio can go up quicker than video that needs to be edited out of the live feed. But separate comment streams hampers discussions, etc.

I am shocked at how good the Fortnite Battle Royale mode is. They made a big ass map (which I didn't know they could do in that game since all the default maps are tiny) - they give you unlimited sprint, you can use regular guns or your pickaxe to destroy all building parts just like the normal game so I was able to shoot out a wall a dude was hiding behind and he built more walls to hide behind...

There's none of the weapon durability stuff or crafting outside of your standard building, you can still find and use traps, the glider is a thousand times better and less broken than the PUBG parachute, I am honestly amazed at how properly built it is.

Of course, you can't squad up right now and for some reason it allows you to spectate the person who killed you, which I guess is fine in solo play, but those need fixing.

I was prepared to log in to this shit and laugh at some bad PUBG ripoff, but it just made me sad at how so much of PUBG seems broken on a fundamental level, like the slow, floaty movement and the awful jumping, how the parachute seems destined to suck forever.

Best of all, there's none of that money grubbing bullshit from Fortnite's "normal" gameplay mode, no stats, no gear, just straight up log in and do battle. Apparently if you win you get a cooler looking glider, which is a nice little bonus if true.

Also all the water is like 3 feet deep since Fortnite doesn't have swimming, which makes the "lake" hilariously dumb.

You guys should know by now that Edge of Tomorrow is easily the best video game movie, even though it's not based on a video game or about games at all. It's nice that people seem to be enjoying Destiny 2. I personally can't muster any level of interest at the moment since I rented vanilla Desinty when it came out and was bored to tears within the first few hours. Obviously a lot of time and effort has been put into it since that first go, however it still seems like something best played with friends to which I'd respond "...what friends?" I might try renting it at some point but it is very low on the totem pole of things I want to play right now. Also I've never touched PUBG once and yet I'm already sick of it to the point that I'm more likely to try that Fortnite thingy to be perfectly honest. Thanks as always for the podcast.

Regarding the Sega 32X, Digital Foundry recently did a series where they "play" every 32X game. It's just a minute or two of each game, but I found it very entertaining from an "academic curiosity" point of view.

I'm not sure if it's cool to link "competing" sites here, so please forgive me if some mod needs to remove this link.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-we-play-every-single-sega-32x-game

Disregarding the lackluster game support, it seems pretty bad from a technical point of view too. Not powerful enough to do worthwhile 3D, and significantly flawed even for doing more advanced 2D stuff.

@benpack I am compelled by my moral compass to tell you that you are great on the Giant Bombcast but you are completely incorrect about Tiny Tina. She is one of the best game characters I have ever encountered followed closely by Kai from Heavenly Sword. Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep is the best DLC I have ever played. I have thrown down the gauntlet, sir.

She is easily my favorite character in BL2, and not coincidently, I love FailSafe in Destiny 2. I think you either enjoy those kinds of characters or you don't. While i think they may have gone a bit overboard with Cayde in D2, I still enjoy his character. I think the banter back and forth between various characters, even during non-campaign missions, is welcome and fun.

On a different note, I'm getting tired of Jeff openly, repeatedly talking about how much he enjoys Destiny 2 on Twitter, then slamming it every time they talk about it on the podcast. D2 absolutely has minor issues here and there, but they seem to nitpick Destiny 2 to death whenever they talk about it, and many of the "issues" they have are literally things that define the MMORPG genre. Things like "gear only matters for end-game content" is completely par for the course for these kinds of games, but is also not true considering higher gear also makes you a lot stronger in the exploration areas of the game. I dunno, maybe it's the fact they all enjoy D2 so much that they have to dive so deep to find flaws, but I wish they would clarify about what a fun and improved game it is more. There's just so much negativity directed D2 in spite the fact that all of them appear to be enjoying the hell out of it.

So Pewdiepie said the N word and it get's a lengthy discussion but when Nick from Polygon was fired it wasn't mentioned. Despite them having a much closer connection to Nick then Pewdiepie. I brought it up and people said it wasn't "gaming news". Pewdiepie saying the N word is no more gaming news then Nick getting fired was and them covering one and not other shows how eager some of them are to criticize youtube and ignore issues with established games journalists they're friends with.

In segment on Destiny 2. About nightfall, notifying the prism elemental change through small text is unacceptable, Brad. Especially since any addition to time when you kill an enemy is so hugely displayed in the middle of my screen. Please look at these things in an objective light. It's a main game play element, not some secret.

@rocketraccooncmro: Pewdiepie is a much higher level of Internet personality than Nick.

Also, Pewdiepie made comments while streaming and "on the job" so it's directly related to his work, while Nick's issues did not stem from any Polygon article, video, or stream but rather his own social media presence (pre-Polygon and with Polygon). Nick's situation was a personal indiscretion that Polygon felt they did not want to be associated with, and I can see why the GB staff doesn't want to spend Bombcast time just giving even more shit to a guy they know, about fuckup decisions he made on his personal time. The Pewdiepie topic led to them discussing DMCA takedowns, the Nick topic doesn't have much to talk about that hasn't already been said about his behaviour elsewhere.

Hmm well if the 'N' word is not a bad word where he lives, I don't think it's weird that his apology somehow seems reactionary rather than an immediate realization of him doing something terrible. Rude? Sure I think he would know that it would be rude to say in some countries. Terrible? Maybe not. Like, if that is the case, he probably saw people from the USA get real upset and then made the video. Should he be aware that the 'N' word is a very big deal in the USA? The USA is not the world. It's not that easy to answer because probably a minority, but still a large chunk of his audience is from the USA. Like there are potentially a hundred cultures he comes into contact with and at some point it's also up to the listener to keep in mind that you are listening to a foreigner.

You cannot expect foreigners to just know everything about the sensitivities of the USA. Especially in the case of the USA where in the last couple years the language has become very complex. To someone from another country like me the USA language looks like a minefield. I rarely ever post anything on Giantbomb that doesn't make me worried that maybe I say something wrong and a moderator might ban me for it. That is not how I like to live, but this is an American site so I will deal with it. There are so many things you cannot say in the USA, for someone like me, that it takes quite a long time to express yourself. You basically need to have a disclaimer before you make a statement in the USA. That is not necessarily normal outside of the USA. I tried not having a disclaimer here, but I did embolden the if word in case people miss it, which I would not have done in my own language. It's not easy, to not only translate the words but also make them not offensive to more sensitive cultures.

@killerattacks: Nah. Bring these discussions on, I say. Politics and ideologies are part of everyone's lives, which is a part of games. Life informs art and entertainment. Besides - this is a current event in games. It's a dang news story.

All speech is hate speech. Everything is hate speech to someone. My grandfather fought in the Korean war; if he were alive today to see thee way the Left has memorialized Socialism he would be heartbroken. Does that mean that universal healthcare and other Socialist ideals can not be discussed? Absolutely not, no matter what your opinion on the subject is. It is free speech and free speech must be protected. Nobody has ever fought and died for nice speech. Remember that. To Jeff's argument, you absolutely can joke about anything and any era that you want. Nothing is off limits. Not everyone has to like it. No one has to like it. There are clearly cases where certain words and certain jokes and certain dialogue is in incredibly poor taste. But in no way does that mean your right to free speech should be taken away.

Does that mean I personally support PewDiePie saying the N-word? No. I find it morally reprehensible and likewise so did he. But if you want to be able to express your opinion and live in a free society free of tyranny and oppression you have to accept the good with the bad because your good and bad is different from my good and bad and somebody else's good and bad. The only compromise is that you can't incite direct physical violence because at that point it is more than just words. All other speech though is free speech and therefore hate speech and it all must be allowed.

And yes, immediately upon finishing the word PewDiePie absolutely dreaded and instantly regretted because he realized he messed up and immediately apologized and semi-rationalized as anybody would do what he had said. He apologized right then and there on the spot, then gave what certainly seemed to be a clear, honest and contrite apology in his video two(?) days afterward. And yes, he did say that guy was an a-hole, a semi-rationalization that anybody else has done that has gotten in trouble when immediately regretting a decision. That doesn't make him what is considered racist in my opinion. As he put it, it was the worst word he could possibly think of. And if your immediate connotation of the n-word is a-hole, that is to me is an indication of his thought of the word. It tells me that his connotation describes a person's behavior, not a person's skin color or ethnicity. That doesn't mean it was any less disgraceful to say by general consensus and my own opinion, but he's not saying that guy was "acting black." That would definitely be racist. He didn't do that. He did however offend some people by saying it. A lot of people probably found it in very poor taste. In his apology he made no qualms or qualifiers in that what he did was wrong and that he absolutely should not have said it. It didn't seem like he was protecting the brand. He seemed genuinely upset with himself that he let his viewers down. And while in the most extreme cases context still can matter (as in, if giving a lecture on the history of the n-word is that the same connotation as saying it during a racist tirade? Obviously no), in this case it is clearly not applicable in this case. People can choose for themselves whether or not to forgive them, but they should also be honest with themselves why they feel the way they do about his apology whether they accept it or not, not project what want to think about his apology to internally justify to themselves their acceptance or rejection of his apology.

And as far as the last time PewDiePie got in trouble, context definitely matters for the vast majority of what was held against him. In one case he was literally mocking Trump supporters as Nazis and then claimed therefore he must be a Nazi. That's insane double backward logic. Wall Street Journal also took a clip of his arm being raised while reaching for something and portrayed it as a Nazi salute.

Anyway, this is a long way and very meandering read to get to the point to about Jeff (and Brad I believe) saying certain jokes can never be made about certain things and I'm saying that is wrong if you believe in free speech.

EDIT: Especially since immediately after saying there are certain things you can't joke about then go on to immediately make a pedophilia joke minutes later, Jeff. I'm pretty sure on the hierarchy of things that are in poor taste, child molestation is really high up there. Like #1 high up there.

Also, regarding the DMCA takedown, that is irrefutably an abuse of power. That is there for legitimate claims that PewDiePie was infringing on their rights and solely wielded the power to enact their own vigilante justice. If you want to support vigilante justice that's one thing, but expect a karmic payback real soon. And they will get no pity from me when they get what is deserved. Words are just words but once things turn physical or have real effect, an abuse of power should not be tolerated. As we all know the Spiderman quote "With great power comes great responsibility." Well, that DMCA takedown is a great power and to abuse power like that is one of the most reprehensible, disgusting, despicable things one can do. And he called for others to do it as well to kill PewDiePie's channel. The abuse of power is in essence lies in the heart of all things evil and wrong. There is not a crime that be committed to where you can't say well, this isn't an abuse of some form of power/ability to do something they shouldn't have done (because if they didn't possess the power to do something, they could have never committed the act). I really hate gross abuse of power and I really won't stand for it. I will never support Campo Santo because of this abuse of power and I genuinely hope the worst happens to their company and that it burns and fails. Shame on them.

@rasrimra: The world, including both Sweden and his current residence in England as well as his deep exposure to America means he is very well aware of the connotations that word has. That's why he instantly knew he had messed up big time as he said the word. When he said "Oh My God," that is in direct reference to himself saying the word. I've done that "Oh My God" myself. I know that "Oh My God" moment where you do or say something that you regret before you even get to the end of the word.

@tpoppapuff: If (theNword) jumps into your brain when you are angry and trying to put down someone, especially when you are broadcasting to an audience, you are probably a racist. I play tons of multiplayer games alone (oximoron?) and get upset and swear at the monitor. I have never called anyone a racial slur, it just doesn't come to mind because I am not a racist like pewdiePie.

Yeah it's free speech, he is free to be a racist. His advertisers are free to not support him and his speech, and game companies are free to request he not publicize their games. Don't know why people are going to bat for him, not like he is being drummed off the internet.

Also when you open with "My Veteran Grandpa would roll over in his grave with these damn Liberals and their socialism" you show your bias and it's no surprise you wish for a game company to burn down because they don't meet your standards.

@cashprizes: OK and may I assume considering the words you use that you're an incestuous fornicator? I'm sorry, I mean to say that you hate any loving significant other to mothers? I'm not name calling I'm just using your logic. What he said was wrong but I do not believe that PewDiePie is truly racist based on the using a word to vent frustration one time. To be racist you have to clearly judge others based on their race. I do not believe PewDiePie treats or thinks of blacks as inferior or any differently than whites or any other race. If he does I haven't seen it.

And it's one thing to request that he take the video down with their game in it. I'm perfectly fine with that. But to copyright strike him out of vigilante justice and to encourage others to openly abuse a flawed system so as to ruin the life of another over a mistake is terrible and horrific. It is the very definition of malicious.

Yeah, because I'm against clear abuses of power. I stand for liberty. It's not about meeting my standards; and frankly for you to defend them for them abusing power because PewDiePie is beyond hypocritical. I'll admit that to me an abuse of power is among one of the worst most heinous acts you can commit. Not the worst but up there.

Further, I didn't say "those damned Liberals and their socialism." That's clearly a misrepresentation of what I actually said. I would not call the Left liberal. They are not liberal nor are they progressive. They are anti-liberal and regressive. They are oppressing free speech, encourage violence against people they suspect are Nazis, and destruction of monuments and history. They stand for collectivism. They are the opposite of liberal hence Why I said Left. Further socialism and Socialism are two different things. The concept of socialism is the idea of giving a portion of one's earnings to the community for maintaining a quality social services needed by the greater majority. Socialism with a capital S which is what I said, is the ideology of giving up one's earnings (and liberty and rights) for a bigger government and a more governmwntal control over everyone's lives. For everyone to become fully dependent on the collective in order to maintain livelihood of everyone. In essence that everyone owns the means of production.

So do not lie about what I said. It only proves how farcical your own argument is.

I'm disappointed in the alt-leftishness shown by the bombcast, "a pattern of behavior" is not an actual counter to taking something of context. I doubt that any of them actually bothered to watch any of the clips in context. You could just as well take a bunch of clips from them out of context to show "a pattern of behavior" of giant bomb being anti-women.
