Giant Bombcast 526: Ultra Mario

This week we're all about old and new arcade games, consoles that did and didn't exist, and rampant E3 speculation, with a dash of new releases like Minit, Ni no Kuni 2, and Far Cry 5 for good measure!

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

@foggen: @loktarogar: Yeah, it's super weird to hear ads for this on a video game podcast. It's ESPECIALLY weird to hear it on a podcast that has talked about Stree Overlord and the like. Don't buy "performance" pills from the gas station. Buy them online instead!

It looks like they sell the generics for Propecia and Viagra, so it's not the same as Stree Overlord, of course. It's just...weird to hear it here.

Talk about renting consoles - in my little part of Indonesia it's common to see places that are basically just internet cafes but for PS2's / PS3's. The vast majority of people here can't afford consoles, but they can pay probably less than $1USD to sit in a room for a couple of hours and play. Whenever I walk past these places every single person is always playing FIFA and I am yet to see any other games being played

Eh, I'm not bothered by the town building aspect of Ni No Kuni II at all. Games like Breath of Fire also had towns you could upgrade with built-in timers necessary for finishing tasks or building new houses/rooms. You simply got a vague "come back in a while" instead of an actual timer. I'm sure you can do that part of the game by playing normally and just checking in occasionally. And I'd be very surprised if it was anywhere close to the "win 100 blitzball matches at minimum, ideally over 450" bullshit of FF X. Or FF VII's chocobo breeding. Or FF X's Thunder Plains. Or FF X's calm lands chocobo racing. Or FF X's butterfly mini-game.

What I'm basically getting at is "fuck FF X", apparently.

Out of curiosity, I investigated forhims, and literally all they sell is hair loss remedies and dick pills. What's worse, they do NOT sell Stree Overlord. This is a complete and utter betrayal.

Love the splitscreen stuff. I find it that it makes it easier to view more than one person at the same time.

Like, I GET where those Snake Pass people are coming from, cuz I hate those little dumb changes to standard icons, (ask me about changes to Rocket League exhausts...I come back after a year and my fave is changed to ugly), but yeah, you don't go crazy heh.

@brad You should read up on the No Man's Sky ARG (Waking Titan). Like most well-made ARGs it's an interesting read, even if I had no inclination in participating in one since 2005's Perplex City.

@whalesex: It was a recent episode of TechStuff. Here it is: https://shows.howstuffworks.com/techstuff/the-phantom-zone.htm

It goes into the details of the founders of the company behind the Phantom and some of the other rather shady dealings around it. It's pretty wild.

I'm really curious what the facebook analytics diagnosis test that emailer sent in was. Maybe it's just morbid curiosity, but I'd like to know what machines categorize me as.

I am really enjoying Far Cry 5...as far as the villains go its pretty on par with both 3 and 4. The "you've been captured" thing is dumb but its still story content and sometimes more "in a burst" than 3 and 4's story was.

The villains of 3 and 4 were just as present as in 5 but there are really 4 villains now. At least the Giant Bomb talk around Far Cry 5 wasn't super cringey like Gamespots was. I watched their "Far Cry 5 Confuses Us" video and couldn't believe that it was real.

The way perks work currently actually have gotten me to try out different types of guns...which I never did in FC3 or 4. I got the bow, I got a rifle, and I got a rocket launcher and I would craft crap to make those better...never bothered to do anything else. I've already tried out more stuff in this than I normally did in any other FC game.

People love smack talking xbox exclusives but I've loved their output. Lots of quality exclusives I have greatly enjoyed and now the best performing third party games. And Sea of Thieves, State of Decay, and Crackdown are all exclusives that offer different types of experiences. Last year was weak but the years prior to that were all pretty strong.

I think Cena is a better actor than Schwarzenegger ever was. He could pretty easily star in an actual action movie, not that WWE and direct-to-video bullshit he's usually in.

@infinity_: I’m afraid I’ve had quite the opposite experience. I’ve been an Xbox supporter since the original 2001 console, and the Xbox One has been nothing but a dissappointment in nearly every regard. Cuphead was fine, and backward compatibility is nice, but if I had to pick between my consoles, it’d be the first to ditch.

@infinity_thor: agreed. Personally I'd take Forza Horizon 3, Ori, Cuphead and Halo 5 over anything I've played on PS4 or Switch except maybe Bloodborne. State of Decay 2 and Ori 2 are two of my most anticipated games this gen.

The 4 up panel arrangement is jarring. That one is a bit overkill considering you have a single shot with everyone in it.

Saw the podcast image and expected talk about Switch icons to pop up at some point. I was not disappointed.

On a side note, it’s funny how ‘mobile’ has become a pejorative term, along the levels of ‘combat boots’ and ‘Western’ for graven insults.

My first DVD was Big Momma's house. I got it with my xbox (which was my first dvd player) in 2001.

Ok, I am gonna be the one to say it. Currently the Giant Beastcast is much better than this podcast, I have stopped listening to it completly. The show lacks charismatic people. Jeff is great, but he stands alone as a cool guy in this show. Brad is sometimes good, Ben is sometimes good, I love Jason but he sucks at podcasting. The Beastcast has a ton of energy and personas, this show is getting stale by the minute.

I also prefer the single camera shots to the 4 panels. Following a conversation is much more natural when you can see where everyone is looking and it prevents weird things like hand gestures looking strange across multiple panels.

*shrug* I've always enjoyed Claptrap. I can see why he's hated, but I'm perfectly fine with him. By the way, they've already done the Claptrap as a villain angle. The fourth DLC for the first game had an evil Claptrap that ended up being the final boss.

About the talk about potential Borderlands PvP - I'd really hope they don't do forced "non-consenual" (as Brad put it) PvP in. I hate the Dark Zone in The Division with a passion. Love the game, but I hate that part and avoid it. My fear is that Division 2 is just going to be Dark Zone everywhere. I really hope that doesn't come to pass. I can't stand forced PvP. I transferred off a PvP server in WoW because I hated being attacked by other players when I'm minding my own business in the world, so I'm opposite of Brad there. I'm here for the co-op, not PvP.

I totally get your point here but this feels very much like making excuses for the game. These aren't meant to be idle games. If you've got to do something else to hold your attention then that feels like a failing on the game's part

@garnsr said:

The waiting part of Ni no Kuni 2 sounds like the realty part of Yakuza 0, in Yakuza I would just start all my timers running and listen to podcasts and sort of doze for a while, then cash in and start again. It's not bad at a certain point in some games, when you've played a while, and don't mind building up some resources before you head into the later game, and have some podcasts or something to hold your interest while the game doesn't require your attention.

This actually reminds me of Final Fantasy XI. It'd take so long to get into parties (because I loved damage dealers, ugh) that I'd start the search then play on a handheld. Weird feeling to kill time while you're trying to kill time.
