@villainy: Pretty good bet on it being some sort of BusyBox based thing. In general, that's been the go to with nearly every custom Linux distro I've worked on in recent years (especially on embedded devices where memory is extremely limited). A lot of the popular "Commercial Grade" Linux distributions like Wind River also make use of it.

What flavor of linux are you guys running? Are you using rsync to sync the files daily?
