Quick Look: Earth Defense Force 2025

@milkman: yep.. I feel weird for saying this but... I kinda wish Kessler was here O.o

I hadn't played one of these games until 2017 on the Vita, but I appreciated it for the dumb fun it offered. The loop of beating levels and getting new weapons (of which there are a pretty great variety, some you will totally love, others you will hate based on your play style) and leveling up your health was satisfying enough.

I remember being very excited about vehicles being present in 2017, and quickly realizing they were not very fun to control or use at all. Apparently that streak continues in 2025?

To Jeff's point though, I am one of those dummies who likes the Mosou games (Dynasty Warriors, et al.), so you probably shouldn't listen to me.

They seem to get cheap pretty fast luckily. They were asking $40 for the Vita version of 2017 at launch, and it was on sale for $20 and then $15 not too long afterwards (which is when I bought it).

This already looks way better than Insect Armageddon. Didn't much care for it at all. If this wasn't $50 I'd probably pick it up. I can wait until it's like $10 or so.

Never played an EDF as they look super monotonous, but the wing diver class looked pretty cool. Maybe when it's cheap I can talk some friends into playing this coop.

Giant incest?!

I was sad they didn't get to any enemies that blow up when they die (giant robots, UFOs etc.). Those explosions in these games are SCREEN FILLING... and magical.

Man, if this was like $30 instead of $50, I would have this right now.

I find it super amusing that Brad is so concerned about loot and lizards in Demon Souls, yet totally bypassed almost all of the loot in the first mission he played. Wouldn't have it any other way.

The bugs in this video are almost big as the ones on the website BOOOOOOM

I love EDF 2017, but never played that Insect Armageddon one because it seemed too polished and charmless.

But 2025 seems like something I'd wanna pick up, even if it looks like they haven't done much to differentiate it from 2017. It's even got the same menu and pick-up sound effects. Weirdly, though, the buildings don't seem as fragile as 2017, so points lost there.

Still, might have to investigate getting this, STAT!

Also, holy crap. It's like the developers watched that Quick Look and then addressed every single complaint Ryan Patrick and Kessler had with it. Even at the end, where Patrick says "it would be really great if these ants were eating the pedestrans."

Thoughts on this hot new edition in the franchise, @patrickklepek?

This game looks fantastic.

EDF is the best kind of bad game. I love it.

This looks really fun and relaxing. Like, a game I would play after work to just blow things up and not care about how well I'm doing.

That looked really good. I'll get that vita one.

The problem with this franchise for me is that it's fun to play for ten minutes, after that I just get bored. Great QL though!

Somebody tell me quick: Is EDF 2017 worth picking up for a tenner ($15-ish)?

I expected a Starship Troopers reference and the Bombardiers did not disappoint.

Imo absolutely its worth getting. I had over a hundred hours of fun with that game. As you can see from comments (and quicklook) though - its a series that either grabs you or doesn't. For $10-$15 that's a pretty reasonable bet to make.

@gaggle64: Yes. Play as the jetpack character because c'mon he's got a jetpack why wouldn't you play as him. Also turn off the in-game soundtrack and put on A-Ha's "Take On Me" on repeat as you play. This is the ideal way to play any EDF game.

So I'm only like 11 minutes into the QL here and I haven't seen them find a jetpack dude option. Is that not an option anymore? This question gets answered at 13 minutes in. Smooth.

Did those ants look stop motion animated or was that just me?

Played 3 hours co-op last night, I love it. Ended up turning off a background video so we could hear the lore.

Though in this QL, there's a sore lack of blowing up every building in sight.

The GIANT INSECTS will be stopped. Got to say I absolutely adore the deadpan lines in this game.

EDF 2016 was tons of building leveling dumb fun. I'm glad they've improved on some things but still managed to keep all the dumb stuff from the earlier games. Super campy, I love it.

Does that also cover the Vita version? I actually really liked what I saw in this Quick Look, and am kinda considering getting the Vita version now.

I love Jeff's and Vinny's improvised "dialogs". I just had to laught out loud about Squadie 19.

I enjoyed one of the past Earth Defense Force games and, I have to admit, this looks pretty awesome. Yes, it's in a dumb-ass way, but sometimes stupid fun is still fun. We need to turn off our brains sometimes and save Gaea from giant bugs from mars or, you know, wherever.

Finally somebody said it.

Seriously, don't give the hard to control class to Brad then expect it to look good, you can animation cancel that charge and move around faster than any of the other classes.

am I the only one that has trouble streaming from GB? Everything else streams fine, but every time I try to stream from GB lately, it's stop and go about every 5 seconds.

Yeah, I'm glad they managed to talk Brad down from taking the hard class at the start. And talk of animation cancel makes me want to play this game even more.

Also loved that Jeff still had the Dream C Club song in his head and busted into it out of nowhere.

He doesn't seem to care about the actual loot from the lizards in Demon's Souls either, he just seem to love killing defenseless animals.
