Quick Look: Resistance 3

I think Patrick slept with this game. It's the only reason he can be overly excited about it.

Boy, I wonder how many times I've played an intro exactly like the one in this game. Wake up, head to shooting range, finish practicing just as the OP attacks.

Terrific. Another end-of-days FPS with zombie-like antagonists; quite refreshing and innovative. They might as well make a game where all the survival VGs are facing elimination because people want to play something else for a change and they are forced to live like rats and face massive waved of enemies, it could be called: The Last Apocalypse: The End Of Survival. Unless the next 2D Mario is a zombie Armageddon... Anyway....

I actually liked Resistance 1&2, not sure why it got the hate it did. They weren't Killzone, but I still enjoyed them a lot. If it's an improvement over the last two, sounds pretty good to me.

I see what you're saying; the story does begin with WWII. What reminds me of the tired old formula is that people turn into chimera and make the world almost uninhabitable for humans. There is even a character who is in the process of becoming one and must be killed by the protagonist; classic zombie movie cliché.

Maybe it's just that a few of these kinds of games came out at the same time, but I was never into the whole zombie thing which has been around for decades. But I get your point.

Also, sometimes when GB praises a game, it seems unjustified...

Well uh, I finished Resistance 1 a few days ago, and I'm a few chapters into Resistance 2... I probably shouldn't have watched this. Hale is dead? Damn.

The Resistance story begins long before WWII, with the whole catalyst for the alternate timeline (the Tunguska event) taking place in 1908. WWII doesn't even exist in Resistance's version of history and the first game takes place in 1951, several years after WWII would have ended. That you've written off the series as some zombie game makes me think you are ill-informed, as the only enemies that really resemble zombies are the Grims and the Menials from the first game. You might want to look into these games a little more deeply. You might enjoy them.

Yes, the story begins before WWII but I thought I heard Ryan, Brad and Patrick say that it branched off of the war. I appreciate what you're saying and none of the enemies look like zombies, but the formula is there: the majority of humanity turns into monsters, it's contagious, we must survive. I must have misunderstood about the timeline and I'm not "writing off" the series; it just seems like a typical survival scenario.

seems Resistance has finally achieved its potential

Awesome stuff.  I am pleased to see Resistance back in form since the first game was the reason I bought a PS3 back then.  I didn't like R2 at all and felt it was a shoddy Halo rip-off, but this looks to be a much better sequel to the first game.  I might pick this up eventually.
 
If anyone is interested in a book series with a similar premise, check out Harry Turtledove's WorldWar series.

Can't put my finger on why, but that spidery mech thing towards the middle of the QL made me think "man, that looks cool", even tho there have been zillions of spidery mechs in movies and games and such. Weird.

The extra development time they got for Resistance 3 really did help this game out.

I didn't touch one, rented two and literally could not play it for more than 3-4 hours game Blew hard, those invisable instant kill things were the worst design decision Ever. This looks like a blast.

I agree! I almost don't even want to get it anymore, i think ill wait for a price drop and grab disgaea 4 instead. I really dont get the R2 hate, i thought it was generally well recieved, and even though i didn't really play the vs multiplayer a lot, i LOVED the coop multiplayer, with its raid style gameplay, and wish more shooters would have embraced it. :( i hope it comes back in dlc, that is something id be willing to pay for

Damn this looks good, but what i really want in a shooter is something like Jedi Outcast. A good blend of first and third person combat, puzzle solving, and platforming. Along with holding every weapon you pick up, health kits instead of the STUPID health regen, and bad-ass weapon alt-fires, it would have me sold in a second...You know what? They should just release Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy for the XBLStore and the PSN.

I was planning on playing all three of the great games that just came out (R3, W40K: Space Marine, and Dead Island), but $180 is expensive. What I did was just rent Resistance 3 from Redbox and beat it in a day. Glad I didn't spend $60 on such a short campaign.
