I might be into this. Any word on how long it is? Cause not one of my friends will be buying this, so there's NO multi-player component drawing me in.

Another case of hating something popular because it's the "cool" thing to do. This is the reason I never visit Screened... Hope Giantbomb doesn't turn into that also.

Can't you guys see it as a homage to hold classic videogames as they assume it is instead of a "rip off" as you say?

This game looks awesome.  All the references make it a real love letter to video games, and the art and animation are top notch.  I'll be buying it when it comes to the 360.

Heh. If anyone in the peanut gallery here had even a remotely original idea for a videogame, and could actually commit themselves to developing it... they would soon discover that the only thing people hate more than rip-offs are bold new ideas that they don't "get".

I bet 100 dollars that if Scott Pilgrim was released at the same time for xb360. GiantBomb would have chosen that version...

@GoodKn1ght: They may not hate the PS3, or actively dismiss it. But I agree with him that they do seem kinda biased towards the xbox360 sometimes. I mean, really, if you look back at multi-platform games, 95% of the time, they're playing the xbox 360 version. The only time's they have chosen the PS3 version is when it's a multiplayer beta like medal of honor that was only available on the PS3 initially.

The very least they could do is try to change things up and get some on PS3 and some on 360 sometimes, that's generally  what I do so I can support them both.

@Ockman: I will agree with that statement but most multiplatform games are exactly the same across the platforms. The fact that they are playing the 360 version shouldn't bother people. Its not like they are saying this is the best version, they're just playing the 360 because its they're preference. That sounds biased in itself but it would only be biased if they actively said yo get this on the 360 instead. I don't see why they have to play the ps3 version, its the same game...but maybe I'm missing your point idk

um, you can't throw out the "white knight" meme everytime someone disagrees with an opinion you support.  It's profoundly rude to presume that everyone who disagrees with you has bad or delusional movies for doing so.  You are calling people out for not considering the other side while you are actively dismissing those you disagree with by using a "clever" internet term. This looks cute as hell, and frankly River City Ransom was one of my favorite old NES games back in the day, so I can't imagine sticking close to its formula could be a bad thing. It's not like it's been replicated very well before that I'm aware of.

I don't think GiantBomb is going down that alley yet. Nothing's ever bothered me on Screened too much either so far (they managed to like the Scott Pilgrim movie and The A Team). This is why I adore Tested, though, they keep very upbeat compared to the Gizmodos and Engadgets of tech blogs.

They're playing the PS3 version because it's the only one out. I'm not sure about the rest of your argument because you didn't quote the person, just replied to them. Makes it hard.

the hell? Beat em ups are practically nonexistent these days, if Jeff feels like he's played this game a million times already.....I'd hate for him to find out how many shooters he has played. "
Or street fighter games hahaha. i think he's played those 10 million times. yeah he is down on it for "trying to hard" when it isn't trying any "harder" than 3D Dot Game Hero; and Ryan liked that just fine and that was most of its charm. homage can be fun and i don't think this did anything wrong (especially seeing the source material!). I really don't get why Jeff has an issue with it, he liked the New Super Mario Bros on Wii which is nostolgia fest, and Street Fighter coming back, etc... and the 8-bit music community would be something i would think he would be into? Its just a little odd.

All the times I've seen Paul Robertson animated shorts I've wanted them to be a video game. Love his art style. I was mainly excited about this game just because he's involved. The fact that it's also like RCR is just another good reason to pick this up.

Wow...what the heck is wrong with Jeff in this one?

He seemed to dismiss this game without giving it a chance. As you level up, and gain stats from eating your combat speed/strength increases. In the same realm as Castle Crashers. So I would urge people not to jump at the conclusion the combat is slow. It really isn't by the time you reach the end. Actually it gets a bit hectic.

I never really heard of the comics so I am coming at this as a newbie. This seemed like a very enjoyable beat-em-up, and it is. Actually is one of the most enjoyable games I played all year. Yes it is very similar to River City Ransom, and why Jeff reacts like it is a bad thing is beyond me. There really have not been ANY games similar to RCR in a very long time. Especially since most beat-em-ups have no level up system, or story at all. Just a continuous side-scroll. That is even including that genres hayday back in the NES/SNES eras.

This game is not perfect, but it is supposed to a homage to all the classic games from yesteryear. The game is not without its faults, but it a very solid game with a lot going for it. I too wish they had online mulitiplayer, but it is still a great game solo. I plan on inviting some friends over as well to play.  I can understand if the online is a so-sale for some, but for Jeff to treat this as a bad movie game is disappointing. Which seems like he approached it as just that. Just another movie based game.

People in the industry always talk fondly about the games of their past, and say how it would be nice to relive it. Then a game comes along that does its best to abashedly embrace that very concept, and the same reviewers bash it. While some people will love this game, and some will hate it it did not deserve this.

Giantbomb give it a try. If it is not your cup of tea, or if the lack of Online is a deal breaker that is cool. Just do not base your decision on this Quicklook. I hate to say it, but this is one time I completely disagree with Jeff. Whom I usually agree with a lot actually in his reviews. I just feel that this game was not fairly shown, and done show in a such a negative matter as if they were reviewing the next Ironman Movie game.

I apologize for such the long comment post. This just really made me shake my head in disappointment. Not because they did not like it; which honestly is no big deal because people have different taste in games, but how they presented it here. Never gave it a chance, or seemed to even get the concept of what the game was about.

I disagree. They presented it like they would any Quick Look. They are playing through it pointing out what they notice trying to be non-opinionated about it. They aren't for it or against it. Jeff didn't talk down on it, he just pointed out a lot of the resemblance's between it and River City Ransom. I think when it was realized how similar to River City this is, Jeff was less interested because this isn't really a new game, just a new take on an old classic.

@Branthog:  the movie was done by Edgar Wright, the guy who made Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, which are a far cry from hipster movies

I didn't like the trailers, nor the commercials for this movie but when I found out it was from Edgar Wright, I went to see it and loved it, its pretty dumb and mindless but the movie does what it wants to do exceptionally well and is pretty entertaining, it encapsulates the joystick generation pretty well.

Wow. I just. Wow.

I cannot believe you people. Are you all seriously telling me, you never wished for a game like this? And now that it's out, you hate it?

You've never sat there and thought 'Wow, I wish people came and made a River City Ransom type game, with kickass graphics, a nice battle system and some sweet music'.  And yet, this hate-on most of you have for Scott Pilgrim is blinding you to the fact, that this game is a nostalgia heaven?

I'm simply amazed. My Scott Pilgrim fandom aside, what is so wrong with this game? I mean, Jeff, that level of distaste for this game is unjust, honestly. You never actually listed anything wrong with the game, you just seem to dislike it because it's a Side-Scrolling Beat 'em Up. (Somehow, although I remember playing a whole lot of other Side-Scrolling Beat 'em Ups when I was younger. Anyone else remember standing in the Arcade, playing Simpsons or TMNT for hours?)

Paul Robertson, creator of Pirate Baby Cabana Battle Street Fight and the Hikikkomori RPG, along with others from the MechaFetus crew doing a good portion of the art, what more could any person ask for?

Anamanaguchi doing the music? What could POSSIBLY go wrong with that?

Okay, so lack of Online Co-op. Is that SERIOUSLY a bad thing, that it wants you to throwback to 1992, grab some friends and actually play together? A game like this should be you, and at least one other buddy laughing and fighting your way to the end, not sitting there with a headset, getting angry when some 12 year old kid doesn't work with you the way you want.

Yes. Scott Pilgrim is a little overexposed. Gee, I've never seen Hollywood promote something GOOD before, something that would SELL. Gee, not at all. Many of you sound like elitists, or 13 year old kids who never owned a SNES.

So someone, please explain to me why you would actually hate this game, without mentioning 'Online Co-op' and 'Scott Pilgrim sucks/is overexposed'. I for one, have been hoping and wishing for a game just like this, with a ton of Nostalgic retro gaming references and a chance to grab some friends and sit around gaming, like the good ol' days in the Arcade.

Yes, it's a rip of River City Ransom.

No, that's not a bad thing.

Like RCR, the action starts off a little slow but gets a lot more fun as you power up. You have to enjoy a bit of the old-school RPG grind, and it's not for everyone, but with a friend on the couch this game is awesome.
