Quick Look: The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match Final Edition

I love King of Fighters. Such an awesome game that never really transitioned well into the modern fighting game scene.

King was my favorite character in these games. I remember reading about her moves in a magazine and studying them for when I played at an arcade.

Ah the memories.

I really enjoy the sort of slugfest style KoF games because who gives a fuck about that story. Some of the endings are kind of funny. My main team in '98 is usually Ryo, Heidern, and Billy but I switch up teams as much as possible. I still play 2002 Ultimate Match with another friend of mine and the backgrounds in that one are fantastic. I get so sad when no one picks Yamazaki since he's probably my favorite fighting game character of all time. Admittedly I'm really not that good with him but the dude is freaking savage.

They actually released it on Xbox Live Arcade a couple of years ago.

Man I love KOF 98. It's a redonkulus fighting game with a bajillion characters that isn't so execution-focused that I can't have fun with it.

@jeff Enjoying these quick looks a lot, even though I know nothing about fighting games and am not that interested in them.

I'd love a video or a series where Jeff or Jason sits down with someone that doesn't know a lick about games and kind of teaches them the basics.

It seems like there are common ideas/systems between the games? Terminology like Advance,Extra, Dash? Love to have all these explained by you guys.

Heh, I never noticed how often Jeff tried to jump in until he fought someone who actually counters them.

This makes me want to see another Neo Geo stream, this time with Jason so the fighting games aren't just Jeff beating everyone all the time

This week it's been like visiting FightingGames.com.

KoF games with Yamazaki in them are the good KoF games. Shame about all the bad news about this port though.

Jeff always brings the funk on a Monster Dunk, and before you ask about that clunk just know that Jeff's got KOF in his trunk.

Real glad Jason is here so Jeff has someone to spar against. Brad's good for MK but falls off pretty hard outside of that.

I always really liked the KOF series, but never spent enough time with any of the games to actually get good at them. Might give it another shot with this, though.

Also I'm with everyone that some kind of Jeff & Jason fighting game video series would be pretty awesome.

This week, with Jeff and Jason nerding out over fighting games, has been awesome.

Having @unastrike to actually compete with @jeff in fighting games is amazing. We need another Scrub League tournament! Bring in some of the all-stars (@alexisg!)

I find fighting games uninteresting to watch and even less interesting to play. Needless to say, this has been a very disappointing week on Giant Bomb for me.

This may sound weird, but I always liked King of Fighters more than Street Figher. Maybe because that's what I played first.

I played Street Fighter first of those (my very first fighting game was Sango Fighter though), and I also prefer King of Fighters despite not really being into fighting games.

Jeff and Jason, FIGHT could be a wonderful semi-weekly feature that i'd love to watch. I really enjoy watching those who have deep roots in a genre really dig into their knowledge.

KoF XIII was my first KoF. I think I got it in a Humble Bundle and decided to give it a shot. It may be the most fun I've had in a fighting game. Being able to roll was such a crazy thing to me, and that mixed with the running made me feel more agile than any other fighting game I've played. Also the first time I was really thinking about range.

Mai and Leona I like cause they're quick and can get around the screen with their attacks, and Andy's moves just click with me.

I think it was pretty much the only fighting game on PC back in the early 90's? Not sure which year that poor Street Fighter 2 port was released, but I don't remember ever seeing it back in the day. So until the PC version of Virtua Fighter 2 was released, Sango Fighter was the only fighting game I had access to at home.

I don't know why, but as much as I don't really care about any KoF game, or old 2D fighting games, I love THE SHIT out of Garou. That game's so gooood.
