Quick Look: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D

Dan wanted to show Brad some weird game where you put on dumb masks and dance for people. We figured we might as well record it. Here you go.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

In one of their previous arguments about this I was really thinking that Brad should give this another chance specifically because he is a big Dead Rising fan. I had the same reaction to both games, which is that I got frustrated and quit pretty quickly but eventually I gave them another try and enjoyed them thoroughly.

I was someone who bought a N64 specifically for Ocarina of Time. I think it's fine to criticize this as being more like an expansion than a sequel, but that's no reason to dismiss it when it's more of one of the all-time greats, with some interesting twists.

Maybe it's too late now but I do think that, like Dead Rising, a lot of people quit after a couple hours and never knew what they missed. It's a solid, and weird, Zelda game, what more do you want?

Damn it, Dan, I hate you for not having nightmares! You're approaching Brad Muir levels of happy and it's impossible for anyone to be that happy.

With all the changes they made adding convenience it actually sounds like an interesting game now and at the same time makes the people who say they liked the original sound like a bunch of crazies more than ever before.

Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword are both really good Zelda games. Boy I'm tired of hearing crap about those two. Especially from people who never touched them.

Oh and the ending of Saving Private Ryan wrecked me. I can't watch it again.

I actually missed out on MM when it first came to the N64. I was still young and what games I had were bought for me by my parents. I was lucky enough to be given a N64 one birthday with a copy of GoldenEye and a golden controller. Christmas at 1998 or 1999 (cant remember) I had OOT. Anyway, I never got MM on Wii or that collectors disk, so now I get to experience it on the 3DS with the updated texture. I always thought Zelda on the N64 was creepy because of peoples faces, and overall vibe, but wanted it to go even darker. Well, MM fits that perfectly. It's weird, dark and overall kinda trippy. Not that far into the game, but really liking it wit my new 3DS with the wooden face plates :)

Ummm.... you could save at the Owl Statues in the N64 version of Majora's Mask (but only in the Western versions)... It was a Save and Quit system (its the Japanese version where you only could save if your reversed the clock)

This is one of those games I had the time of my life 100%'ing, and I recognize it as one of the best Zelda games if not video games, but I wouldn't for the life of me return to it.

Haven't played through this since it came out on the N64, but I remember loving it. It's uncanny how many of the quests and details Dan went through in this Quick Look that I still remember.

All the changes in this remake seem smart, I would definitely be up for replaying this game a decade and a half later.

Unless Brad was playing the Japanese version of the original Majora's Mask back in the day, he could've saved in the same manner as described in this Quick Look, it would just be a temporary save and not a hard save. It wouldn't have solved his problem, though, because he would still have to warp out of the dungeon to save and probably still run out of time.

The Inverted Song of Time is all Brad really needs to enjoy the game. He doesn't seem the type to do all the side quests, even though they're totally worth it in this game. The characterization of these characters is so awesome that it's weird these knock-off-OOT characters end up being the superior versions.

They fixed a lot of the annoying things but god damn the time rewinding mechanic still sucks ass. The two things that bothered me the most seemed to have been fixed but the general gameplay loop of do things and then reset everything is super suuuuuuuper lame.

Guys, this was a great Quick Look. A very nice look at most major aspects of the game, some opinions and feedback on the game, and also some great conversation and dialogue about tangentially related stuff. I live for this. Thanks Dan and Brad!

FFXIII is great. Yeah its crazy linear for almost all of the game. But the story is pretty decent and the battle system is very different than old FF games but its really interesting and fun imho.

My copy finally came in, and I'm hoping I'll like the game more now than I did originally. The first time I played it, I went all the way through it without getting the Bomber's Notebook. Because of this, I never had the impetus to thoroughly investigate NPCs. I only ever engaged with side-quests that just happened to occur at whatever moment I was passing through Clock Town. I eventually grabbed everything with GameFAQs, but like Dan mentioned, most of the side-quests are just overly elaborate fetch quests for Pieces of Heart and most of the masks are worthless, and that turned me off.

Also, the whole while I played I thought the game tried too hard to be dark and disturbing. Even though I was 19 at the time, the game's shock and "edge" failed to impress me. (And as the 2000s wore on and more games and series went grimdark, I became even more irked by that direction.)

@facktion: Because Dan knows what to do. This game probably is better to play now though because you can look everything up. I hated this game as a kid and got rid of it quickly.

@sodapop7: Twilight Princess is fine, but it is inconceivable to me that any Zelda fan can say, in any capacity, that Skyward Sword was "a good Zelda game." Aside from the dungeons, that game took every aspect that people have loved about Zelda over the years and threw them all in the toilet in favor of a handholding, linear fetch-quest-a-thon. From the ground up, Skyward Sword is a "Zelda by Numbers" that flies in the face of the spirit of the older games. I feel like all 3D Zeldas had slowly been treading in that direction, but SS just went off the rails.

If that game hadn't had "Zelda" in the title, nobody would have liked it. Nobody.
