I'll one hundred percent admit that these games were flawed anyday, but god dammit I loved Yoshis Story and Jet Force Gemini. Both underappriciated classics, my heart almost melted when Drew said he liked Story :D

I make no apologies for what I'm about to say: I remember beating Glover after renting it back to back a bunch of times. Gotta love the glove!

Also, now that it's been said a bunch of times, that, uh, that sounds kinda dirty. Ah, the 90s. Just as absurd as I remember you.

Another highly enjoyable show. Ken Griffey looked genuinely great - being from the UK those particular games never really appeared on my radar. More love should have been paid towards the Ken Griffey music though - that nice SNES low end bass rumble and snappy drums. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to part of a future broadcast being used to highlight nice old game music.

Also. Drum and bass you say? Have it and have it large:

I remember seeing Bukem at the Sub Club in Glasgow, mid 90's - he dropped this at about 3am. The place went mental.

I remember being super excited about the first episode of Sledgehammer.... Particularly the first scenes when he is interviewed after getting groceries and the sniper on the roof.

And what do you know, the pilot is on YouTube:

My friend and I rented Buck Bumble one weekend during a sleepover. From what I remember, the 2P mode had a weird 1v1 soccer mode in it. Still terrible, but we too loved the shit out of that theme song.

@hasuto: Thanks for posting that. I'd totally forgotten about Sledge Hammer until Jeff mentioned it. I loved the show as a kid, and watching it again now, it's still great. It's also clear that Sledge Hammer is @danryckert if Dan had pursued a career in law enforcement.

This song is great.

I genuinely really like this. I'm also from the UK and the right age where I grew up with UKG, so take that however.

Surprised to hear Roger Clemens MVP Baseball mentioned. It was a pretty shoddy game (especially on the NES) that it seems very few people have played, and there was not much redeemable about it, but I loved the base running mechanic.

I haven't played the game in 22 years or so, but I loved that to tag a runner out, the placement of the slide and tag are chosen by the players as a thrown ball approaches the base. Even if you were WAY out, you could choose to slide to the left, middle or right of the base, and would only be tagged out if it was chosen correctly. That means all baserunning has a 66% of a "safe" call each time. I can't remember the exact mechanic behind it, but it was something pretty novel for a baseball game. It took away from the realism and was pretty stupid, but it was actually really fun.

That, along with the Tony LaRussa baseball baserunning feature (with a joystick, you had pretty ridiculous control of the lead runner, and could steal every base all the time if you were patient enough to wait until the AI screwed up during the rundown of the base runner) were my favorite break-this-stupid-baseball game features to antagonize those I was playing with back in the day.

There is also ABC's Monday Night Football, which basically let you score on every play because at least one of your receivers would be open on every pass play. Against the computer, you could select your DBs on the fly and intercept basically every pass the computer threw. The only way the AI could score is using the "power play" function at the end of a half, which was only a sure-thing if they chose a run play, because they made the computer way overpowered on those specific plays. The pass-based power play usually worked too, but it wasn't a sure-thing TD.

Man, there have been some pretty terrible sports games that still managed to be really fun to play.

I don't know if it's a valid comparison any more as I haven't been to one of the "restaurants" in some time, but I also said the keyboard on the Atari 400 was like a McDonald's cash register.

Fuck Tim Allen, I don't believe in Dinosaurs the TV show. If I can elect to have a portion of my brain forcibly removed, it would be the part that retains memories of accidentally catching segments of that atrocity while channel surfing in the 90's. I wanna say that shit aired on ABC around here, and I still to this day have a profound distaste for that channel thanks to that show.

TGIF! We watched it because it was there.

I owned Glover back in the day and HATED it. My friend let me borrow 3 games in return for letting him borrow Zelda for the N64: Banjo-Kazooie, Yoshi's Story and Glover. Little did I know it was basically a 1:1 trade...and I say that as someone who absolutely LOVES Banjo-Kazooie. I will concede now that Yoshi's Story isn't good, but I liked it way more than Glover back then. Just not my cup of tea I suppose.

To anyone who looked at Ken Griffey Jr. Baseball and thought it looked fun (and to counter Drew's comment that modern baseball games are much too complicated), check out Super Mega Baseball on PS4. It's a fucking great amazing mix of old school baseball games like this with some modernized progression mechanics tossed in. It may look silly, but it's actually a really damn good game.

Jeff and Dan did a QL of that game and were pretty impressed and seemed to have a lot of fun with it. it definitely made me decide that if I was ever jonesing for some baseball vidya that I'd pick that up.

@fractology: It's decent fun, but I just really don't like the move to 3D graphics. One of the best parts of Griffey was how detailed everything was. I loved that art style. Super Mega's art style doesn't really do anything for me. I know that's a shallow reason, but it's just kinda initially off-putting. The game itself is totally fine, but it didn't necessarily recapture the magic for me.
