VR has managed to be a pretty great source of entertainment for someone like me who hasn't bought any equipment. Always ready for another rodeo.

I hope we get something like this on the PSVR sooner or later. I imagine that kind of gameplay can get really tense if you're all by yourself and really focusing on the game. Clammy hands for sure.

Ok I don't get something [as someone who has never seen VR but through this site]...

I thought the point of how every game had to have teleporters was because if you walked around like in this game it would make you insta-barf or something?

If THIS game can let you just wander around like an actual shooter without getting you sick... why the heck are 90% of VR games making you teleport instead of walk??

I may just misunderstand something :) As I never used VR

And to add: For as much of a mess as this sorta is... this actually looks really cool. If they can polish this up and keep it going it could be great.

@alavapenguin: You're not entirely misunderstanding. Developers, at least in the early going, seem to want to completely eliminate any chance of nausea, so they do the dumb teleport thing. Free movement, for many people, is completely fine, which is why it's annoying when they ONLY offer teleportation. I played Quake on my GearVR and loved it - full free movement and all.

So I've played quite a bit of this game. Couple of things:

The "proximity grab" option should really be called "gun stock mode", because that's what it's really for. If you're not using something like a ProTube, you should really turn it off (and use both hands to shoot). Grabbing the front of the gun will give you less recoil.

The Oculus version has vaulting, where you can grab ledges with B and Y and pull yourself over. Looking at the controls screen, it seems like maybe the Vive doesn't let you do that? (which would be weird).

You can still grab stuff like the charging handle or the magazine if your hand snaps to the grip, just put your hand in the right place (even if it looks like it's stuck to the gun).

The game has knives, or at least it did before Christmas. I actually got a knife kill once :) You can also grab guns out of people's hands, which feels really cool if you can sneak up on someone.

I played a lot of it before Christmas, and it feels like the player count has dropped off a bit, unfortunately.

@foeaminute:

Well that is what totally turned me off to VR is cause every game was just some lame teleport thing and as far as I heard stuff like actually moving around like this was not possible due to nausea.... but if this game that seems to be falling apart at the seems can do it... I don't think I accept that excuse as much...

E: I wonder how many people would reference Tolstoy when talking about a VR game. That felt like it came way out of left field. Also, "soccer audience" sounds really weird to me as a British English speaker.

Free-movement _can_ cause motion sickness (especially in the early days, where everything was a touch more janky and unproven), so the teleportation movement provides a more accessible experience (though YMMV, as I find the teleportation, and especially movement locked to angles, to be more disorientating).

For a game like this that doesn't really need to care as much about being accessible, and isn't likely to be someone's first/only VR experience, free movement is fine. A few people might struggle with it, but it provides a better game for those who don't.

This game seems like it does some neat things, but like a lot of VR games it kinda looks more like a prototype than a finished game. It`s kinda insane how bad this looks visually.

When I first saw this video, I thought that this was a standout game called "VR Battle Royale" you found in VRodeo, and it got its own video because it was so good. I'm sure that's what they intended with the title.

@alavapenguin: The teleporting thing is kind of necessary - at least as an option. I'd say about 1 in 4 players gets nauseous from free movement. VR tolerance is a thing that can be built up though - the more you play the less risk of nausea for many people - so as developers are getting more daring in their implementation of free movement. I don't have much trouble with free movement myself, though it does depend somewhat on how well rested I am and whether I've properly eaten.

I will say that teleporting isn't as bunk as you think. The experience of being "in" a place really mitigates the idea of teleportation breaking immersion. It's not my preferred method of movement in VR, but it's not as game breaking as it seems from the outside.

Absolutely incensed and scandalised by Matthew Q. Rorie attributing Chernyshevsky's work to Tolstoy. Unacceptable on an otherwise reputable video games web site.

@alavapenguin: You've already gotten some pretty good answers but I just wanna add that a lot of developers are defaulting to the teleport system because it's the safest bet - VR is already a really niche platform, so in order to make sure games are commercially viable and at least make *some* of their cost back you have to appeal to as many VR owners as possible.

Because devs are starting with this assumption that teleportation is the least risky choice, they end up designing the rest of the game's levels and mechanics around that which is why it's fairly rare for games to have options for both without some level of compromise.

@alavapenguin: Just to add to the other responses FWIW, most FPS games I play in VR anymore have the Stand Out-like movement option--many by default. I can't really think of the last first person game I played in VR where I used teleport movement, honestly. Fallout 4 is just like this vid, as is Arizona Sunshine, Onward, Pavlov, the Minecraft mod, etc.

Edit: As far as motion sickness goes, I suppose it varies by person but I think developers have systems figured out pretty well at this point to where the vast majority of players can use trackpad locomotion without feeling queezy. I felt a little funny for the first 5-10 minutes in my very first trackpad locomotion game a year and a half ago, but haven't felt weird since.

To continue the discussion around teleportation and free movement in VR: I have a Rift and don't get sick at all walking around in a game. The only time I've ever become nauseous a bit is when I was playing The Vanishing of Ethan Carter sitting down (the game uses analog stick movement). I find teleportation to be disorienting, but it should still be an option for gamers who can't take full 3D movement.

This really is the first VR game I've seen where I am convinced "The VR aspect is absolutely integral to making this as cool and worth doing as it is" while also being what I'd consider a full game and not a 1-3 hour experience or a super simple 'Think of a game you could play in an Arcade in the 80s and now you've got it"

I realize its just PUBG but VR, but with some polish and some style added to the game. Speakers in the walls announcing each player kill and etc, this kinda thing just screams "Now this, this is what makes a full fledged AAA VR game". Obviously this is kinda..no where near that? But man, this is the first time, as I said, where I'm convinced developers are starting to progress enough in VR that..well.

Skyrim or Fallout 4 in VR seems neat, but really its just a cool but tacked-on mode. This? This gives me hope that by 2025 we might see a truly amazing Witcher 3 level made from the ground up for VR (even if I am sure they would still have to sell a non-VR version).

Heck, can you imagine if the next Elder Scrolls game is being delayed (cause if they don't announce and release it this year/sping of 2019..hmm) that we might be seeing Bethesda finally create a new engine, with VR in mind from the get-go. And can you imagine just how much of a field day the modding community would have with such a game if it wasn't the 6/10 'meh' that FO4 was?

Granted...a lot of time goes into to some very sketchy mods (not that I'm one to tell people what to spend there time making/downloading/doing on there own) but man..

I'm so close to being able to shoot lighting and fire from my hands, cast a spell and fly around the world, summon elementals and slay dragons (while riding on a tamed dragon why not) I can almost taste it..and this game of all games is what finally, finally has triggered me to go "Welp, time to start saving to get a supped up PC and get into VR.

I've been on the fence for so long, waiting for it to fail. Waiting for developers to decide the only things worth making/we will ever get are shooting gallerys/1-3 hour experiences, Decent, but not worth dropping two to three thousand dollars getting my hands on. Now? Now I realize that, while I doubt Skyrim VR provides the experience I want from the future 'Ur-Game'. VR is getting closer and closer to being a must-have experience if, like me, you want to play all the biggest/most impactful games in any given year.
