I would say that the Wii had a pretty good Q4. Not even a great one. And definitely not a great year.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Game » consists of 10 releases. Released Dec 08, 2009
An icy re-imagining of the classic Silent Hill, which trades weapons for frantic chase sequences as the player tries desperately to flee pursuing enemies. It takes on more of an adventure game format than traditional survival-horror.
Giant Bomb's Wii Game Of The Year, 2009
My RSS reader popped up "Best 360-Only game" a few minutes ago but it disappeared immediately and I don't see it on the site. Anyone get a link?
Edit: As a major 360 fan... Considering it's 360 exclusive, what was there this year? It almost has to be Forza 3 because ODST was a bit of a bomb and I genuinely can't think of another good 360 exclusive this year...
Edit 2: Predicting nominees as Forza 3, ODST and Halo Wars. At a stretch they might nominate the GTA episodes. I love my 360 and it's my choice for all the multiplats but... man... not a great year for exclusives.
Edit 3: Duh, Shadow Complex will make a slot over Halo Wars.
Edit 4: The videos have been going up but not appearing on the main page. Shadow Complex actually took the award.
I love all the new quick looks for the winners. Good stuff. I hope all the Climax guys watch that with a big smile cause this game seems to be doing some really cool, fresh stuff. This is the first game on the Wii that really makes me want to pick it up because i feel like im missing out on the latest and greatest.
There's also an official strategy guide of course. The thing I like about FAQ observations are when it goes into demonstrable detail the developer doesn't share. Much more common in older titles.I really wish those FAQ people would stop trying to deconstruct the way the game reacts to certain player behaviors. It's a hell of a task, and it's crazy that they are able to do it, but I'd rather not have the illusion "shattered" so to speak. I guess the easy way out is just to not look at the FAQ though, so it's not too bad.
Finally added this to my shopping list. Thanks for highlighting the replay value/differences so much Brad.
Hey, I have a wii. All I need to do now is get another remote and nunchuck and pick this game up. It looks pretty good.
Definitely think this is a good pick. Everybody knows about Mario and Wii Sports Resort and Punch-Out, and while there were some other nice third-party Wii titles (LKS, MadWorld, HOTD, Dead Space Extraction) this year, Shattered Memories is deserving of some praise.
- There's crazy mixed opinions on it because of how different it is.
- The illogical and surreal story leads you to false conclusions and gives you partial revelations, and plays off your expectations of those to deliver an amazing twist. Even though I coincidentally correctly speculated the twist back around when the first previews came out, the game itself totally lead me in a different direction before tying it up in an awesome conclusion that made subsequent playthroughs a must. A lot of what seemed like your standard movie and game "flavor" bits and story tropes suddenly turned out to be directly tied to the main plot.
- Even the chase sequences were cool, though flawed. Once you figured out what they wanted you to do with the motion controls, it became much easier, and a couple of later sequences throw gameplay twists at you.
- Most importantly, the psyche stuff was awesome. Yeah, a lot of it was "cosmetic" in nature as some reviews complained, but when even the little things start changing on you during a second playthrough, it totally surprises you and makes you wonder what else could be different. As a result, there are a lot of little things that make the game great for swapping stories with other people, so you can compare how you did things differently. I've had a few moments while discussing the game where I and another person would discover that we had both done something totally different, and neither of us had any idea that it was possible to do it the other's way.
Love that there's a new QL, will have to watch as soon as possible.
The guys should do a "Mini Team Endurance Run" of this game, where it's broken up into two "teams" playing it separately from the other.
The nominees in this are shocking considering all the first party titles that came out. I should really check out rabbids go home.
Maybe now its time for me to buy a game for the Wii that isn't made by Nintendo. Seriously, All the games I have for the Wii have Mario in the title of the game.
Awesome! Thanks to the quick look, I actually decided to pick up the game and it probably turned out to be my Top 3 Wii games. Love the story.
I haven't played more than 5 minutes of Muramasa, and that was the J version.
In the quicklook:
"It's not like you got time to look at your map"
Ugh, yes you do. The full-screen map stops time and you can check where you come from and where you need to go. I can't believe Brad managed to get through the game without knowing that?

" Was Muramasa not even one of the finalists? A shame. "
Muramasa was the "Best PS2 game released on Wii to cash in". Muramasa is good, but it's not really anything more than what Odin Sphere was, and it didn't use the Wii in any way that made it need to be on the console. Muramasa could very well have been a digital release.
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories is one great great game. It transcends the boundaries of videogames, and plays you as much as you play it (especially after you finish). Definitely recommended for anyone who thinks they have a good level of IQ for story analysis. Go play it if you haven't!
" @AgentJ said:Any game can be a digital release these days. Odin Sphere was one of the better PS2 games, so I would think that a game that is faster, better, and more beautiful would at least be up for an award in the year it was released. I want an Endurance Run for this game. Looks really cool and interesting, but idk if it's a game I'd necessarily be into playing.
Also, kind of surprising New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn't a runner-up.
So, this quicklook is the exact spot I'm in this game, and I totally doubled back in exactly the same manner as Brad. Brilliant.
Muramasa is not a ps2 game because the era of good-budget, A-developer team, playstation 2 games came to a close with Persona 4 (or maybe DEvil Summoner 2). If not for the Wii, then muramasa probably wouldnt have been able to exist. I'm glad that the wii exists as a platform for quirky and original game concepts from smaller developers, like Vanillaware.
" Ugh, man i hate how whenever a good, non-waggly wii game comes out, like Muramasa or maybe Phantom Brave: We Meet Again, everyone just says that it doesnt count and should be released on the 360 as an xbla game. Sometimes developers pick a console for a good reason and a game does NOT have to have waggle to be a worthy wii release. I intentionally avoid games with significant waggle controls and i love my wii. I didnt even play my wii play disk when i got my console, just chucked it in the trash. "It's says something about GB wii game reviews when the wii game of the year only got 4 stars but still won the section. If it was so good why did it not get five ? I have not played the game so it maybe just the best out of a bad bunch but I still think they under played SMB wii. "
Maybe the best a wii game could get this year is 4 stars? Which is kinda sad.

Aha (har har har)
Wii Sports Resort and Rabbids Go Home over Mario Bros Wii? Odd, that.
But I agree that Shattered Memories should win.
