Turtles In Time Re-Shelled, released in 2009 from ubisoft, is a remake of the arcade version of turtles in time. Overall the game is a fun beat em up featuring the lovable turtle characters, and it is a decent rehash.
TIT uses the typical beat em up formula which features varied enemies and stages, with a boss fight at the end of each stage. The game features 4 difficulty levels in which you are sure to find the right one for your abilities. The game also features an added survival mode, which is pretty much playing through the game without losing a life. Difficulties can also be selected for survival mode, and every mode in the game can be played co-op online and local. Although the action varies a bit the game is pretty short even for the
genre and can be beaten pretty easily within an hour. There also isn’t much to go back and re-play aside from a different difficulty or the survival mode.
The four turtles are of course in the game, and each one has different stats for areas such as speed and strength. I had the easiest time playing with Raphael and Michelangelo. Besides stats, each turtle has a regular attack, a special attack, a jumpkick, and a dash attack.
The stages in the game are pretty cool, and they vary due to the story in the game which involves time travel. The game starts in modern times with the turtles fighting shreddar's goons, but shredder opens up a portal and sends the turtles traveling in time. Through the course of the journey the turtles will be fighting in a jurrasic level, a pirate level, and a cowboys/indians level. There is one stage early on in the game which was the most frustrating. The frustration is due to a certain enemy in the level mixed with land mines that when you hit one in a section your turtle doesn’t recover in time, thus causing him to be hit by the mines over and over again. There are traps like the mines on almost each level, and they definitely get annoying and frustrating. The bosses in the game are easy to beat, but overall the difficulty of the game is just about right.
The remade soundtrack is good, but it feels like more variety in both the music and the sound effects are needed. The graphics are serviceable, but there could have been a lot more done in both visuals and audio. The game has nice animations and style, but overall it looks kind of bland.
Overall I had a lot of fun playing TIT, but the game could have contained more substance and improvements over the original. I can recommend the game to any beat em up fan, and especially fans of the turtle’s franchise.
