That said, top review.

Jeff's opinion was completely invalidated the moment he said he would rather be drinking a Diet Coke.

@jasperkazai: well it's the difference between downing 330 calories in a single can or not and sometimes you just want a soda. It's weird how in the comments there is this rhetoric that a) if you drink soda you're a monster and hate your own health and b) that people who drink soda are drinking it all the time or something. I drink soda but like a can of Coke Zero a week or something. I don't think 4 sodas a month is a big deal.

Dan is a different story.

I really liked Coke Zero as a delivery system for when I wanted caffeine but no calories (and not as much caffeine as the low-cal Rockstar and Monster options). I haven't tried Coke Zero Sugar yet, but I'm concerned that they've screwed up a good thing. I don't think regular Coke (too sweet) or Diet Coke (...ugh), or any Pepsi (all too sweet).

I drink a lot of soda and should probably at least switch to a diet/Coke Zero sort of thing. But whatever artificial sugar stuff they put into it gives me a colossal migraine, so I stick with regular Coke.

It still blows my mind the obsession with "soda" fizzy drinks Americans have.

On the flip side aren't there many places in Europe where you need to ask for "Still" water if you don't want the carbonated kind at a restaurant?

I'm not a fan of bubbly drinks in any fashion, they just make my stomach feel bloated.

Have they changed the recipe again or did it for some reason take longer for the new Coke Zero to hit the US than Sweden? Because they did a "New Coke Zero" thing here about two or three years ago.

While New Coke was a failure, the sales spike gained by reintroducing Coca-Cola Classic actually more than made up for any lost revenue. In fact, the return of Coke Classic was so successful that people believe it was a conspiracy the whole time. A Coke-spiracy if you will!

Diet is lower in calories, but affects one's system the same way as sugar does.

So it's not actually as "good" for you as it seems since it still spikes insulin.

That isn't true.

Diet Drink Sweeteners and Health

More study is needed because there are studies about the microflora of the gut that say artifical sweeteners change the chemistry of our gut. If the preliminary studies are correct, some artifical sweeteners pose more of a hazard for diabetes, not for caloric intake. More study is needed for sure to get to the bottom of this.

We might find that the unintended consequence of trying to reduce caloric intake with artificial sweeteners is worse than just cutting down the use of sucrose, fructose, and glucose in our diets.

http://www.webmd.com/diet/news/20140917/artificial-sweeteners-blood-sugar#2

http://health.howstuffworks.com/wellness/food-nutrition/facts/do-artificial-sweeteners-raise-blood-sugar.htm

If nothing else, I would be cautious about drinking/consume too much of anything with saccharin (Sweet'N Low), aspartame (NutraSweet and Equal) and sucralose (Splenda). And when I say anything - I mean: cookies, snacks, pasta sauces, fruit sauces (apple sauce, etc) , sweeten drinks, energy drinks, or even fruit juices. Yes, there are fruit juices spiked with 'lab created' sweeteners...the food industry is very sneaky. Meanwhile, yes, reduce your intake of sucrose, fructose, and glucose too....of course do that.

If you argument is "But I like the taste of Coke Zero." I'd just say, "Sure, and 12 oz of antifreeze — Ethylene glycol is mighty tasty too",but you should not drink it. Liking the taste of something is no the reason to eat or drink it. Hydrogen cyanide smells like bitter-almond, but it will be the last thing you smell. Do not sniff 'Arsine' is a colorless, flammable, non-irritating toxic gas... a slight garlic or fish-like scent.

@monkeyking1969:

I've not seen any scientific study that can conclude that artificial sweeteners have any harmful effect on the body. There's actually not much in common among the various sweeteners. Just that they're all sweet tasting. All I ever see claiming negative effects are articles that misinterpret studies and don't understand the science.

Also, if you want to sweeten your drinks don't use Splenda. It's only 1.2% sucralose. The rest is maltodextrin, which has calories and is used as filler to allow people to use it in the same measurements as sugar. Sucralose is 600x sweeter than sugar. If you just buy pure sucralose powder you get way more of the sweetener for the price. And it's really neat that you can perfectly sweeten your coffee or tea with 1/64th a teaspoon of it.

Exactly, not true at all. If artificial sweeteners had any mentionable effect on insulin, physique athletes (bodybuilders and the like) wouldn't be able to reach ridiculously low body fat (3-4%) in their contest preparation phase while consuming large amounts of diet soda daily. Just to use a real world example.

I don't drink soda (or pop if you're from WA) anymore. Nothing to do with 'it's bad for you' or what have you, I just don't care for it. I'd rather drink coffee/mocha. Also, kind of off-topic, but I once said 'pop' to someone from California, and they said they had no idea what I was talking about as they call it soda. Ha ha. Funny, I don't say pop that much now myself... It's weird how different places call it different things. 'Cola' is the weirdest.

@i_am_lono: comparing sodas is a time honoured giant bomb tradition that has been going on since before the site was even named. Check the arrow pointing down podcast and early bombcast eps where they would bang on about energy drinks nearly every ep.

In Michigan we're 100% pop people. But people still know what "soda" is. It's weird. In Michigan, even though no one calls it that, if you asked for soda or soda pop or whatever, people know what you mean. But the opposite isn't true. I lived in Louisiana and they just call all pop "Coke", but if I asked for pop they look at you like an alien. And in Australia they just call it soft drink but absolutely have no idea what "pop" is.

@jeff sparkling water is a pretty good substitute for soda. It's still got the fizz and the flavors are alright.

The Safeway/Albertson's brand, Refreshe, is unmatched in zero calorie flavored carbonated water!
