Let's say that development of VR has been perfected. Movement with the headset on works, latency is so low that it's not an issue, you don't get sick, everything is working as advertised.

What kinds of things would do you want to do in VR? I'm not talking about adaptations of current things to fit a headset, I mean the crazy things you have imagined.

Feel free to describe the weird peripheral or controller that you would need for your idea to work. If VR as a platform were to take off, I'm sure these things wouldn't be too far behind.

Personally I'm just as into movies as I am into games, and am really into the idea of watching newly released (on disc/streaming) movies that I missed in the theater on a virtual big screen, assuming we get past the part where the resolution is lowered because it's split between the eyes. I don't really need the fake theater decorations and seats if it means what I'm watching looks accurate.

Honestly? I'm very easy to please. I just want to an MMO in VR; that's it. It's always been a dream of mine to put on a VR headset and feel like I'm in that game's world with a bunch of other people. Obviously it's not going to be at the level where if I move my arm then my character move's their arm - at least not in my life time- but it would be cool to be fighting something, here something going on to your left, physically look left and see some people attacking some huge monster.

I guess I never really thought about that. but a huge MMO that works perfectly would be pretty sweet. I want a game where there are 1000 individual spells that you unlock by going to specific locations and casting them there (after which you could use them anywhere), and the only thing stopping you from using them all is your own memory of how to cast them. That would be baller. Like, imagine a guild gaurding the top of a mountain where you have to go to learn a certain spell and there's always dudes just stopping other players from getting up there so potentially only their guild knows this powerful spell.... Everyone banding together to free up this location to other plays.

I think some of the best VR experiences might be not action based. Dialogue based games, puzzle games, wandering/walking exploration games.

Are you 80 years old? Because I'm pretty sure that we'll be able to do that in the next 20 to 30 years.

I guess what I'd love to experience most are impossible spaces like the non-euclidean geometry levels from Descent and Duke Nukem 3D. I think that could be really cool. I'd also like to see something really alien/otherworldly or straight up surreal in the vein of Evolva, Darwinia, Morrowind or The Dark Eye.

Just imagine walking through a claymation nightmare-land like this:

@twolines:You are both wrong. We can already do this and more.

Another example. It probably won't be long before games start utilizing this. Now, I'm not too up to date on the progress of these systems, though I would presume a lot is left to be done in terms of actually using body tracking in a meaningful way. Like picking up objects, or fighting.

There are some fundamental problems that may be unsolvable, or at least very hard to solve, such as any kind of collision feedback. What about when the in-game characters hand collides with an object (when punching for example), when your hand does not? And will it feel natural to grasp around and pick up an object when you can't actually feel it?

I want to see .hack (pronounced "dot hack") fully realized as a virtual MMORPG. It's that 8 part PS2 series/anime about a virtual MMO causing mysterious comas/deaths of players due to a boss virus (or whatever) in Real Life.

But if that's too real, then me with a bowl of ice cream would be ok too.

Pacific Rim Jaeger simulator in the crazy stationary walking apparatus they have. Bonus points if it's co-op.

The walking apparatus would need to feel suitably heavy. I imagine it would also be a bit of a physical work-out

    ...

In fact, just give me a rowing machine and hook me up an on-rails river trip through Pokemon Snap or Skyrim.

With just random stuff happening around you. Doesn't even need to be interactive. Someone has to be thinking of how to sell these as a fitness peripheral right?

I'm both hyped and dreading VR. I hope for games where you don't have to rotate your arms with gyro controllers a bunch to play. After some broken bones, neither of my arms rotate particularly well. Think not being able to turn your hand palm up - one is 90 degrees away from palm up, so in hand shake position, the other 70 degrees. This also makes me terrible at hand feeding birds, but awesome at doing the robot.

I picture myself being stuck in a tutorial or calibration being told to rotate my arms, sobbing in to my headset.

I don't think the VR experience most catgirl enthusiasts have in mind involves a "lighthearted adventure."

    1. For me nothing to exciting but first I would like to create my own map whatever it is and explore it.

    2. Revisit my old favorite games in VR I would love to play max payne in fps mode in VR or fly a jet in GTAV.

    3. It would be cool some how if the film industry could go back and add virtual reality in your favorite movie imagine back to the future 2 when there flying in the delorean and you could be sitting in back looking out the window stuff like that would be so cool.

    4. MP games talking to your friends online like a battlefield game flying a chopper while your friend is shooting tv missiles that would be awesome I would love to go back to BF2 and do that.

    5. Going to a old rock concert of your favorite band when they where alive or in there prime.

There's so many other things I could add but those are just off the top of my head. I can't freaking wait until next year I will finally get to play some VR it's always been a dream of mine all the way back to the early 90's when I saw the lawnmower man for the first time.

I want to play a LOT of Myst / The Room / FIre Maple Games styled puzzle games where you explore a room / house / watever and solve puzzles. I have been playing through a lot of these lately and I think their pace would be perfect for VR. Here is hoping for a VR version of the WItness.

This is the beginning of the end. Second life will become mainstream and our dark dystopian future is soon here.

On a side note I want to travel through colorful galaxies and nebulas. I want to watch stars be born and die.

That and a virtual movie theatre.

A space sim that both allows me to experience landings, takeoffs, and atmosphere burns would be neat as hell. Wouldn't mind a Sims-esque game that allowed me to design architecture and walk through it.

Pretty much anything that doesn't look like it fell out the back of the Steam Greenlight shitwagon.

Boring answer: Fun, engaging and unique experiences. Taking concepts and genres and flipping them on their heads in a way only VR can. A resurgence of creativity and original ideas on a AAA scale, instead of leaving it all to the indies (those guys are great, but some of the best ideas just can't be fully explored or produced by a small team). In other words, I don't actually know because the stuff I want doesn't really exist yet.

Wait a second, how have we (including me) not yet said a proper football game. I mean, I know we're not all sports fans here but even just a proper QB simulator would be great. Younger athletes could use it as a tool to reading defenses and high school sports teams could use it to to help the QB recognize defenses away from practice. You could cycle presnap formations in a flash-card-like speed that is unable to be reproduced with the team on the field.

I am stoked that I'll be able to do my Elite Dangerous, Euro Truck, and Dirt Rally in VR. And I suppose they go from the more 'experience' end of the VR spectrum to 'gamey' in that order as well.

In the future I'd love full on non-game virtual tourism type stuff to emerge, and it's encouraging that so many of you are okay with this sort of thing too 'cos its more likely to happen.

Super Jumps like in city of heroes. Maybe even a super hero mmo so I can climb up walls and leap over a bunch of city blocks. Explore realistic underwater environments. Take a tour of awesome places located around the world. Finally play a virtual D&D campaign. You build the maps and streets like in minecraft I guess. Maybe use real world environments or crazy set designs to use as your setting. That would be so sick. Imagine a fully created Dracula's castle including town and dungeons. Maybe a small cemetery with a large tomb hidden beneath.

Also, as much as i disliked the book, something like Oasis from Ready Player One sounds awesome. 1000s of worlds all with different rules and style. Also something like that being a social platform in which people do meetings and such.

I think if Wipeout VR doesn't happen, I will cry. I'm willing to settle for Hydro Thunder.

Grid Runner or something like the Mario game in Nintendoland would be fun... or that Pac Man that came out for Gamecube or N64... I guess I'm trying to say tag.

    1. MMO experience is the first obvious choice. Obviously compared to some like Sword Art Online etc blah blah.. Just an entire other world that I can live in and experience. Could be a space sim, standard fantasy world, trucking sim etc.
    2. A table top game. I guess this is sort of already being done? But I don't know anything about it. It would be like an RTS game basically but it's all playing out in very high detail in front of me. Probably more along the lines of Microsofts Hololense.
    3. Porn. Duh. Not something you just watch but you participate in.

Yeah, I mean the whole concept of VR is meant to be about immersion but it breaks down as soon as you're asked to move. If you were in a mech with pedals and shit that could be awesome. (I guess racing games and flight games would work just as well but would be far less cool)

@nevergameover: fwiw the current stuff for 180° & 360° videos I can only describe as weird. And not a good weird. I'll stay with written stuff.

As for me, I already got the overly large cinema and cool Go Pro camera videos. So I'd be interested in other tourist stuff

I once got to use a Battletech pod and honestly, I want that kind of simulator experience but without the $10,000 price tag.

Also, realistic VR tourism, would love to be able to "visit" landmarks and places in 3D.

Voyeurism. Not porn though. But like being able to walk around a movie set while they are making a movie, get to see all that craziness. Or being in the locker room of the big game during the halftime speech. Stuff like that. Being able to experience things you would never normally be able to experience for most people. I think that would be what I would enjoy the most. Being at the State of Union Address. Being in the locker room after my favorite team wins the Super Bowl. Watching X actor have to do 40 takes of a line because everyone is laughing so much. Those things would be amazing.
