The original Mount & Blade allowed the player to traverse the fictional country of Calradia. This takes place in a medieval setting. The gameplay revolves around the player carving a name for him or herself in the sandbox world as either a mercenary or a merchant.
Not much is known about the sequel at this point. However, in the official announcement it is promised that the game will involve medieval combat on a huge scale, bigger, bloodier and more intense than ever before. In addition to that the announcement mentions that Bannerlord will have many highly requested features. Bannerlord was first revealed in an interview by Mikail Yazbeck, former designer for TaleWorlds Entertainment.
