Zoey is a college student, a horror movie aficionado and the daughter of a very wealthy family. Zoey's face was initially modeled after Alesia Glidewell, the same person that Chell from fellow Valve game Portal was modelled after. But after the 2007 character redesign her face was modelled after Sonja Kinski, as per the director's commentary and final credits.
According to the official comic for "The Passing", at the time the infection broke out, Zoey's parents were divorced, her mother was remarried, and Zoey was living with her father, a cop. Zoey's father taught her how to shoot a gun. She seems to have been closer to her father, sneaking out and watching zombie movies with him. She had a college scholarship and was supposed to be studying making movies, but was spending her time watching zombie and vampire movies, instead. During an argument with her parents at the dinner table, a "homeless man" bit her mother, Lynne, and Lynne in turn bit Zoey's father. Zoey's father, fearing he'd "turn" like in the zombie movies they'd seen, asked Zoey to shoot him. Apparently Zoey gets her resistance to the infection from her father's side. Bill appears to treat Zoey like a surrogate daughter.
Zoey also apparently has a huge weakness for peanut butter.
- [Upon seeing the dead helicopter pilot] "Pilot's license RE-VOKED!"
- [Upon hearing a Tank in the train car] "Hey Francis, guy who opens the car door says what?"
- "Hey look, Francis, we're passing gas!
- [In the comic] "Dear sweet Jesus, is that peanut butter?"
- "A cabin in the middle of nowhere? I know how this movie ends."
The following is an official description of Zoey written by Valve."After spending her first semester holed up in a dorm room watching old horror movies, Zoey was given a choice: Stop fooling around and get her grades up, or drop out. Now that the planet's overrun with murderous zombies, and all of her professors are dead, Zoey at least has the cold comfort that she's been studying up on the right subject after all."
Zoey is voiced by actress Jen Taylor, who is famous for roles in the Super Mario series, Metal Gear Solid series, and the Halo series as Cortana.
Zoey's head appears in the Steam version of Mevo and the Grooveriders.
In the Cold Stream announcement Valve revealed that Zoey will appear as a skin in the XBLA version of Minecraft.
Zoey is also featured as a playable character in the Cold Stream DLC, which features the 4 old classic maps from the first Left 4 Dead and a new community made map. The DLC is free for the PC, and $6.99 on Xbox marketplace.
