I'm loving it.  I'm playing it on my laptop, and I like that the aiming is very responsive and easy to do with just a touch pad.  You get two weapons, one offhand item, an alternate fire, and melee.  So as the Officer I had a machine gun and shotgun, and flares as my offhand item, and my alt fire was a rocket launcher or something, but you can customize what weapon you hold in each slot.  Also there is active reloading from Gears of War, which is a very good idea.  Another thing to point out is when you reload, you drop that magazine and lose any left over ammo from it, so you can't always be safe with full mags unless you feel like throwing away ammo.  I found a sentry gun thing and set it up, but I had to swap a weapon to pick it up, but once you deploy it you can go back and fetch your dropped weapon.  The graphics look fantastic too.  So far I've just played offline practice with three AI team mates.  It let me give simple orders like stop and follow, as well as ordering the correct class to unweld the door or drop ammo or something.  The stop and follow orders made a red stop sign, or a green go sign appear above my character, so I take it that can be used online with other players to give a quick order.  I'm amazed that this game is free, because it's very high quality, and I understand you can unlock weapons and stuff, not sure if there are levels.  So uh, yeah if you have a PC get this game because it's free and it's awesome.

My download is going incredibly slow. I'll leave my PC on overnight and check out the game tomorrow.

Haven't had a chance to look at it yet but hell, it's free, so I definitely plan too. I hear it's awesome too so hell yeah.

I can't download it, says servers are overloaded. Guess I was too slow. :(

#8 Posted by CaptainTightPants (2834 posts) -

I really want to play it however i can't even start the download right now :D

#9 Posted by Rehehelly (414 posts) -

I changed my download server to japan as I was getting about 10kb/s from the London server, now i'm getting about 400kb/s. So, about 30 mins left on the download. I recommend changing download servers now haha.

I want to play it... but I wanna play it with ma frens.

Downloads been going for hours :( i loved the UT mod! I wanna PLEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

#11 Posted by JoelTGM (5596 posts) -

It took me a while to download too, but after a while of getting like 10-20 kb/s, it went up to around 500-800 kb/s and then finished rather quickly.

For the love of PC gamers everywhere, Valve, invest in server farms FFS and let me download.

What's the point?

They'd only be under high load at certain times, ie when a big game gets released. Any other time steam servers are absolutely fine, so it'd be a waste of money.
#15 Posted by Forcen (1804 posts) -

Man, this game is fun. Its way to good to be free.

#16 Posted by Rasgueado (709 posts) -

The game is great! It's a top down left4dead style of game with Aliens. They took a bit more time giving classes distinct differences and uses, and threw in some progression on top. I really like it!

It looks like they've thrown out this first episode for free, but it seems apparent from the layout that there is going to be more. I'm sure they left space there for people creating their own levels, but I'm willing to bet if the numbers Valve is tracking are high enough for people playing, that they'll release additional campaigns as additional paid content. That's just... pure speculation on my part. Though... if I was a company like Valve looking for a way to make people happy, while testing the waters of a new IP... that's what I would do.

#17 Posted by mazik765 (2315 posts) -

Is it free permanently? Or is it like a release day only thing?

I hope it's longer because the Steam servers are too busy for me to download :(

Me and Forcen played it just recently, "and let me tell you, IT IS AAWESOOOMME!" (Illigal Danish jokes ftw?). But seriously, it's addictive, and so bloody fun. If there'll ever be a future DLC, It won't bother me if it cost me 10€, I'm buying it.

#19 Posted by Marz (5642 posts) -
my initial impressions so far is that it is pretty damn fun.   Though some games i've played, people keep forgetting that there is friendly fire and that reloading too quick will make you lose ammo.   So those guys with bad habits of playing MW2 or other shooters that reload all the time get confused why their ammo runs out quickly.
#20 Posted by gike987 (1750 posts) -

People seems to not understand that there is friendly fire. Other than that the game is fun.

#21 Posted by Forcen (1804 posts) -

This game needs a quicklook.

#22 Posted by ComradeKritstov (693 posts) -

So excited to see what modders do with the tools.

#23 Posted by ShiftyMagician (2129 posts) -

It would be fine if future installments are paid, as this game is free and everyone can try the new IP before they invest in it.  I still have to download it though, but great to hear good things from it.

They did Alien Breed:Impact not too long ago, and that looks like basically the same thing.

But this is free.
#25 Posted by Forcen (1804 posts) -
@Keenblaze:  This has differences that it is free and its multiplayer coop focused. More people need to hear about the game.
#26 Posted by MAN_FLANNEL (2462 posts) -

I'm downloading it now.  All you fucks were hogging all the bandwith.

#27 Posted by agentboolen (1751 posts) -

Its a cool game but I wish they had some kind of game pad support, I hate using the mouse to steer the guy with the gun!!  This would be a lot more fun with some a controller.

"Paid Content"? From Valve? What are you mental?
#29 Posted by Skytylz (4029 posts) -

Well, it won't let me download it yet, but it looks cool.  I hope it supports a 360 controller !

It wouldn't make much sense to release a new campaign as paid content when they gave us the tools to make our own maps.
#31 Posted by s7evn (1072 posts) -

It is definitely a lot like the mod, but so much better. The whole game is just working really well - besides the occasional join game issue.

#32 Edited by Keenblaze (470 posts) -

I tried joining a game, watched three guys play until dying, was happy that I could finally play a game, chose to be the tech guy, then was immediately kicked.

Is the tech guy highly coveted or something? Was I not supposed to pick him? No one else had picked him yet... I AM CONFUSED.

Got into another game and was told that I'm terrible as a medic. I need someone to write me up some kind of guide to Alien Swarm classes. And the whole game, basically.

That's where you're wrong. Companies do it all the time... Bethesda is an excellent example.

@Blackout62:
A little bit out of context... let's flesh that little quote back out again shall we.

"...but I'm willing to bet if the numbers Valve is tracking are high enough for people playing, that they'll release additional campaigns as additional paid content. That's just... pure speculation on my part. "

As I said... I don't actually know that they will do that. They have a history of giving customers additional free content when they have bought something. It isn't too much of a stretch to think they might ask for a few bucks if they make a lot more content for their free product.

@Rasgueado: If you knew anything about the modding community, it's obvious this is a rebuttal to the release of the UDK in January. The Source Engine used to be modder's delight, and then more and more people went towards UDK because it is a better looking engine. Valve wants more people to mod the Source engine, giving away the source code to Alien Swarm is a good way to keep people interested.

so far, so good

#36 Posted by cap123 (2477 posts) -

more than awesome even, just played with 3 guys who worked together brilliantly! what fun for free.

#37 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

Seems like fun but only for mutliplayer or co-op. I'm a lone ranger. Even for free, it's not for me.

#38 Posted by Tactical_Kill (1695 posts) -

Its a really fun and addicting game.

#39 Edited by ZeroRegistry (74 posts) -

Definitely a fun game... although, playing with the wrong people can sometimes be frustrating.

#40 Posted by The_Laughing_Man (13629 posts) -

Very short. But it was fun.

It's okay when going into random games, but when you play with friends this game is awesome. I was playing with just one friend earlier and we were having a blast. I can't wait to play with a larger group of friends.

yes.. yes it is. i like how it requires strategy. having to replay the same stage over and over isn't a chore surprisingly. you just have to step back and plan again. it's good stuff.

just goin into the steam settings and change your server region, i chose Vietnam lol

Short but really well polished. I played through two campaigns with completely random guys and if everyone plays their roll, it's a really fun game!

I seriously cannot wait to see what the community comes up with.

Also you can totally draw boobies on the map!

I haven't played with random people, but from what me and my buddies have discovered (in 2 hours of playing mind you) is that the tech guy is kinda weak. I think the people you were with were just being douches. He's kinda weak, but not enough to kick anyone for picking him.

I really enjoy this game. i can't wait to put together a good team and tackle this game on hard mode! Any takers? :)

#47 Posted by Marz (5642 posts) -

The tech guy is actually the most important, since you can't even start a mission without one in the group.   If the tech guy dies you have to restart the mission over again.

Nope, depends on the mission, sometimes a tech guy isn't needed at all. :)

Decent game.  I like it, a lot.  Reminds me of how Aliens the game should have been.  My only problem is that I'm not a PC gamer, unfortunately.  Not by choice, but because I can't afford to be.  So I'm not used to using the keyboard and mouse this way.  Takes some getting used too.

Gonna try with my 360 or PS3 controller.  Anyone like using a gamepad for this game?  Worse or better?

Protip: Any game that allows strangers to kick you, means you will be trolled. Non-stop. The function is always abused.

Play with friends or solo.

re: Control Pad... I initially found the fact that WASD were permamapped to North, South, East and West a little awkward and tried plugging in a wired 360 controller, but the game doesn't seem to recognize or support game pads quite yet (if ever). You might try something like xpadder, but in all honesty you'll probably get the hang of the mouse and keyboard faster than you think.
