Activision To Release Guitar Hero: Smash Hits Set List

Smash Hits' official site lets you vote to see which songs are revealed next.

Smashing!
Smashing!
I really like the idea of Guitar Hero: Smash Hits. It's going to take songs from the past guitar-only games and re-release them in the full-band format. I like it because those early Guitar Hero games have some totally crushing hits in them, and it's tough to go back to some of that stuff now without hooking up a PS2.

Well, it's getting to be time for Activision to start releasing the song list for Smash Hits. But rather than just tossing out a press release and being done with it, the publisher has decided to post it up in chunks, sorted by the game that the songs originally appeared in. The song list will be updated every Thursday, and users get to vote on which game they'd like to see the songs from on the game's official site.

Additionally, some songs from the game's 48-song track list have already been revealed:

  • "Killer Queen" - Queen
  • "I Love Rock N Roll" - Joan Jett and The Blackhearts
  • "Bark At The Moon" - Ozzy Osbourne

  • "Them Bones" - Alice in Chains
  • "Killing in the Name" - Rage Against The Machine
  • "Message In A Bottle" - The Police
  • "Carry On Wayward Son" - Kansas
  • "Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd

  • "I Wanna Rock" - Twisted Sister
  • "Nothin But A Good Time" - Poison

  • "Barracuda" - Heart
  • "Through the Fire and Flames" - DragonForce

Bark at the Moon, yes. Killer Queen, yes. Carry On Wayward Son, yes. Barracuda, yes. I Wanna Rock? Well, I'm just going to assume that they're going to use that same version that was used in Rocks the 80s, which was still by Twisted Sister, but it wasn't the original recording and wasn't as good as the original. But the nature of it being a full band game sort of takes the sting out of that move, since you'll be screwing up the vocals far more than Dee Snider ever would, even on a re-recording.

As you might expect, Smash Hits runs off of the same stuff that powered World Tour, so it'll have a lot of the same features, like the GHTunes song creator, online band battles, and so on. It'll be available on 360, Wii, PS3, and PS2 in June.

A cover's a cover.

Also, I wouldn't call these "Guitar Hero Hits", I'd call them "Hits by other artists who have their songs in Guitar Hero"

Jeff, you might want to mention that the songs in this game are masters, not the cover versions that showed up in GH1-3 (the game's website confirms this).  It's sort of obvious that GH/RB are not doing covers anymore, but I wasn't sure if that was true of this game as well, until I looked it up.

Activision better allow you to import these songs into GHWT.

That totally doesn't roll of the tongue. Marketing failure.

I would consider it if only they weren't covers. But then again yelling "FUCK YOU DON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME" into a mic that is hooked up to a horrible pitch system sound cool.

@Steven

Yes it is the master but it's not the original master as Jeff said. It's the Still Hungry version which is significantly worse.

Hopefully this game will feature "Holy Diver" by Dio.

And I'd suggest updating the post so people who don't go to the website know that all songs will be masters.

Yeah, I believe these are all masters, Jeff. That is a big difference, and it makes the game sound a little better for me.

More Dio would kick ass. Or SOME Dio.

Honestly I don't see why everyone is hating on this game so much. Why is this any weirder than paying 2 dollars per song in Rock Band? They've had some awesome songs in Guitar Hero games that would translate great to the full band thing. If you're going to hate guitar hero, do it for a good reason.

"The best of Guitar Hero Music" sounds like some f'n Son May bootleg version of Guitar Hero.

If you're going to hate guitar hero, do it for a good reason.

The note highway sucks and you can't use all the old DLC you already paid for, or play the songs off the disc(s) you already bought.

Is that a good enough reason?
Also Activision ... Fascistivision AMIRITE?
