Apple Founder Steve Jobs Passes Away at 56

After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, the technological visionary is no longer with us.

No Caption Provided

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has lost his seven-year battle with pancreatic cancer, it was announced today.

The technological visionary has dealt with health issues for close to a decade, going on a medical leave of absence this past January.

He continued to be a public figure for Apple until announcing his retirement in August.

"Steve’s brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives. The world is immeasurably better because of Steve," said a statement from by Apple's board of directors. "His greatest love was for his wife, Laurene, and his family. Our hearts go out to them and to all who were touched by his extraordinary gifts."

Apple's impact on the video games industry, especially in recent years, has been undeniable. The iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch are some of the most popular portable gaming devices available.

The company announced the latest iteration of the iPhone yesterday, the iPhone 4S. It goes on sale later this month.

Apple is collecting thoughts and memories of Jobs through the email address rememberingsteve@apple.com.

Thanks for everything, Steve.

I am certainly no fan of apple or their products or their effect on games but he was certainly a visionary creator and changed the way people do their jobs and live their lives globally.

I hesitate even skimming through these comments. I'm sure there will be more than the needed amount of vitriol, which is zero.

@YetiAntics: I wonder if people realize that pretty much every big tech advancement/tech is usually inspired by science fiction? Hell, there were space shuttles named Enterprise, people.

I don't care what "technological allegiances" you have, it's never a bright day when a visionary passes away. I hope peace finds you, Mr. Jobs. You've more than earned it.

Lot of Apple haters bringing back handed comments or outright disrespectful things to Apple, it's consumers, and Steve Jobs.  Oh internet.

Very sad day. He changed the game more than once in his lifetime, few people can ever say that. His impact on the tech world will be missed.

I find it kind of odd that the article is on Giantbomb, whereas on Tested there's just a picture with a headline.

It doesn't matter what you did with your life -good or bad- the death of any and all human beings should be honored with at the very least a small sliver of respect; those you out there that can't understand this, just think how it would feel to know if people were "satisfied" by the announcement of your passing...

On a different note, Cancer is a tough battle to fight and Steve gave it his all as he did everything in life

Rest in peace, man

While this is a tragic loss, I am interested to see how Apple recovers from this. At the end of the day everything still comes down to business and profits.

Dude was a great bridge between computer nerds and the rest of us - taking gear and ideas from the geek domain and translating them into something useable and attractive for the mass market. He was a marketing wizard. A sad day for his friends and family.

Don't mean to be a douche, but stop saying he moved technology forward. The people who move technology forward are the scientists who work at companies like IBM. Just because they do it for the pleasure of invention instead of commercialising their success doesn't mean they need to be ignored.

This just reaffirms my belief that obituaries of any form should not be on the internet. It's just not mature enough to handle it.

Pffft, this isn't news, Klepek. Why don't you go post this shit on your blog and leave the real news to the professional journalists?

Not news? Company worth nothing in the 90's turned around to be one of the biggest tech companies in existence now, owing largely to his influence. I found this story on this site before any other, and I'm grateful to Patrick for that so I think you might have fallen the wrong side out of bed this morning.

And a third. People on the internet have lost their sense of humor.

I'm not sure how your comment would ever be funny even in a sarcastic way. Maybe you could explain it to us?

Weird to see this on GB. Steve Jobs always did everything he could to have nothing to do with games. The popularity of games on iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch happened in spite of him, not because of him.

Other than that, I've got to say that I'm a bit surprised to see so many emotional responses to his death on various tech sites. I doubt any other prominent tech figure would get that kind of reaction - not even Bill Gates who at least has worked hard to make the world a better place through his foundation. Is it just that Jobs was such a visible leader?

By all accounts he wasn't a very sympathetic person and it's not clear to me how much he can truly be said to have been responsible for Apple's recent successes. Whether his influence on gaming is ultimately beneficial ror harmful also remains to be seen. All that being said, this is obviously a sad day for the industry.

You should see the other board I post on. Imagine a collection of misanthropic individuals trying to one-up one another with smart aleck remarks between long-winded rants about people expressing their condolences. Take the worst comments in this thread, amplify them, then picture them as the majority. Oh internet indeed.

As i said in the chat. I don't understand people saying "I wonder what Apple will do now". They will do what they've always done. Apple is not some incredibly innovative corporation. What they've mastered is marketing techniques. Google, & Microsoft in this decade alone have been a lot more innovative and moved industries forward. Far more than Apple, with all that said, RIP. Though i'm atheist so.....yeah.

He changed everything. The way we work, the way we think, and now he's dead. Just slightly older than my own father.
